  • This happened on 2 of my Iphone 3GS. The battery expanded and bent the logic board and the screen. Apple makes their products to self detonate so that consumers will go buy new products instead of hanging on to old ones. This is Illegal. Someone PLEASE SUE THEM. EFFIN STEVE JOBS. I guess Karma bit him in the ASH in the end.

  • Mine expanded, I called Apple yesterday and the idiot on the phone told me that my Macbook was designed to need both the battery and the cable to be used at the same time for power. Uh, yeah right. I demanded to speak to a supervisor, who gave me a case number and made an appt. for me at a Genius Bar. Went in today and bam! Instant replacement, no charge! He did however give me a BS story about my hard drive "failing" which I think was to get me to spend $171 for "repairs" today. I didn't.

  • Mine expanded after not using the laptop for weeks, lucky I noticed it starting to blow up before going on holiday (take a look at my vid). If I hadn't removed it I think it would've caused serious damage.

I was told by Apple Genuises that this "happens all the time" and Apple Care said that this is a "DESIGN FEATURE" .. to let you know when the battery has come to the end of its pathetically short life!

  • @AppleKaboom What I was told today by a Genius is that if you leave the battery in the laptop when it's at 100% charge and use the cable at the same time, that's what causes the expansion. Who knows who to believe - every Apple worker seems to have a different explanation for it. I will say that I am happy I saved $130 today by the Genius guy giving me a free replacement battery without any argument whatsoever. Customer for life for that!

  • @mermaidofsuburbia Hi, thats sounds like some good customer service you got there. Was your battery still under warranty, under AppleCare or within a year old? It does seem they all have different ideas as to causes, many seem like excuses really.

  • Once the battery begins to expand stop using it and remove it for personal safety. I hate how Apple now uses Lithium Polymer batteries while light and perform well but do not last as long as old battery tech. The danger is when they begin to vent, the reason why they use plastic bags/shell for the battery cells instead of metal is due to the buildup of gasses given off during each recharge and discharge cycle. Once it reaches the stage of bloating ditch it or risk a chemical fire.

  • Looks just like mine! I hope they'll replace it for me.

  • This started happening to me about a week ago but even though i took the battery out it looks like it has continued to expand o.O weird. I hope apple replaces it (again) but i doubt they will.

  • I just noticed today that my trackpad button seemed sticky and unresponsive. I took out the battery and the button works perfectly. When I put the battery back in it sticks again. I think the battery is starting to expand. :(

  • omg!!!!! i thought my trackpad took a dump on me but it was the battery buldge into the mac cuz i have a hard case . oh yah my batter is swolen just like this. no wonder my laptop would shut off randomly! fucking fuck!

  • It's just started happening to mine. I noticed that the trackpad stopped working. Looked underneath and I saw it started to bulge. Luckily a work colleague had exactly the same problem with his MacBook Pro. His actually popped out and spilt goo everywhere. I will be chasing up Apple to see what they have to say. From what I have heard it seems that people get mixed results depending on who they contact. It' s disgusting if Apple refuse to replace it, this could be extremely dangerous.

  • My Macbook just had the same problem. My battery started to bulge so I took it to where I bought it at Epi Center (Micro 2000 Technology Pte Ltd) in Singapore and they refused to replace it. They said it was year and a half old so it's out of warrantee, and besides its only bloated??? I asked them to escalate to Apple, which they did, and Apply refused to replace it! I will continue to use it and hope that it doesn't get worse or cause a fire or leak.

  • @kenzztube - this is stupid. why wont apple stand behind its products. ok so batteries have a life span, and if they are dead then we shouldnt get it replaced. but this is a HAZARD. An expanded battery is a faulty design! they should recall every battery sold!

  • My macbook started stinking (like a petroleum product) about 3 months ago, a hairline crack appeared (on inside monitor), eventually cracked. apple says $800 for replacement monitor. I brought it home to think about it two weeks later the battery started swelling and is still swelling!

I think this swelling battery ruined my laptop!

  • I have the same thing happening. Would shut off instantly for no reason. Had it on my desk, noticed its off balance, saw the bulge underneath - battery swelling. Need to replace battery

  • Happened to me too, but they will not replace it. I will call them again...

  • Mine did this too! I just called mac and they took care of me and offered to send me one, or for me to go to the store to replace it.

I'm not sure if it was because of a low cycle count or what, but a lot of people were saying bad things about apple and I thought i would throw a good one out there for anyone freaking out like I was.

  • crap. that happened to my Macbook too. Dang it. I'm still using it, though.

  • same thing happened to my 2 year old mbp 15" :(

  • Why taking out the battery? Let the battery damage the computer instead and get a new computer on your Apple Care Protection Plan, thats what I'm gonna do when my battery expanding. Can't wait XD

  • Comment removed

  • Don't hold it! That is a extremely dangerous Li-Po battery and when it starts smoking...BOOM! INFERNO!!!!

  • lol, the same shit happend to my 17"

  • Lol, this happened to me too, but the weird thing is that I left the battery on my shelf after removing it from my computer and I noticed that it continued to expand as the weeks wore on - scary, no?

  • This just starting happening after almost two years of trouble free operation. I'm not sure I should expect a free replacement, but this does seem dangerous.

  • happened here as well.. :-s

  • You think that's bad.

You ought to see the battery where the individual cells were actually inflating to the point where the cover popped off. It's somewhere on Google.

Good thing that the battery issue was dealt with as swiftly as it was.

  • This happened to me couple of days ago, after 1.5 yrs since I bought my 17" MacBook Pro. One of the internal cells inside the battery expanded so much it burst half of the battery open. I am traveling away from USA, so I am not sure if Apple will replace it for me when I return (I do not have Apple Care). Any ideas ?

  • just call them after you make some notes (for reference and speech orientation and bitch respectfully (cool headed and to the point) include posible reported dangers ( gooogle it). ask to speak to there manger and then they might let you file a special claim. warning though, u will be on the phone for a long time lol

  • This is happening to me as well. WTF???

  • thats it. mine was two inches!

  • Man this happened to mine, too. Apple were good though, they replaced it with no problem.

  • @Royzoner Yes but did they replace it outside of warranty?
