I have the pleasure of owning the 2-disc special edition that has the Theatrical Cut. When I saw the Enhanced Edition, I assumed that Han shot Greedo first, then as Greedo died and hit the table, Lucas added the effect from Greedo's gun to miss Han by a few inches. I guess I was wrong. Oh, well. Yay 1977 edition!
Lucas is appealing to Political agenda. They want everything to be "morally right". By making Greedo blatantly shoot first, it gives Han a certain "right" because he's defending himself.
This society is ruining movies with politics and morals.
might i add to my earlier comment... Han also appears to fire 2 times. greedo shoot, then han and when hans blast hits he shoots another.... DIE GREEDO DIE
In the original han shot first and greedo never shot but in this (bluray) clip greedo actually shoots first. use the spacebar rapidly when they shoot and greedo shoots first.which makes me wonder... since greedo shot first (in the blu ray) , how the fuck did he miss? BUT since the original came first, always for eternity, HAN SHOT FIRST.
I have a copy of the Star Wars novelization written by George Lucas and that book is pretty clear that Han sneakily shot Greedo from under the table rather than be taken. Thats just how it was in the original movie. If Lucas wants us to believe that was never his intention, I have the book he himself wrote that says otherwise. Greedo was there to capture Solo for the bounty; he was a bounty hunter, not an assassin. Greedo never shot at all and thats why he died.
NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES YOU WATCH THE ORIGINAL OR THE NEW VERSIONS, GREEDO SHOT FIRST! If you WATCH the damn lasers move outta the guns, you see that Greedo fired JUST before Han fired. You literally ARE missing that fact if you claim Han shot first.
pause at 0:10 Greedo's shot missed and recochetted already above the left shoulder of Han, while Han's will still strike Greedo's still. GREEDO SHOT FIRST!
Pause the video at 10 seconds. Look at the shoulder part of Greedo's vest. Then pull up a video of the scene as it was originally shown and look at the shoulder of Greedo's vest. They are different. The Greedo shooting first in the above video clip is clearly CGI, and poorly done CGI at that!
The best part is when the white furry alien scratches his head at the end, as if he is thinking WTF was that all about? Lucas has way to much time on his hands. That scene was a classic, and he ruined it. Han shot first, and it was justified because Greedo was going to kill him. Nuff said.
If you watch the shot over and over again you see how terribly edited the view of Han's upper body is to show him moving over to one side. It doesn't even look like his face. and with a gun pointed steadily at someone point blank, you would never be aiming at his head. This scene doesn't even make sense in the way they edited it.
I saw the film in 1977 when it was released. Han shoots Greedo dead to save his ass. Like a boss. It's also stated in the script. The end. I don't care about the Special Editions and any of that crap that came after, those don't exist to me.
Am i the only one who likes the prequels more than the original -.- i know that graphic doesn't matter when it's a good story but if you compare them it's a huge difference and i like the story of the prequels as well.
@1337Figaro No, you're not alone. Probably. I liked the prequels. More than the originals? Prob not. But I did like them in and of themselves. I have decided most people loathe them simply because of the hype/it not being as nostalgic. Same reason some people still argue Morrowind is better than Skyrim: Purely for nostalgic reasons.
@cantstoptheseeker Again, wrong. George has a shirt that says Han shot First. Changing this scene, as with many other changes were akin to Editorial mandates.
Changing the scene is absolutely pointless! Why would he "wait" someone to shot first! There's even so little time between the shots no one could be so fast to be able to react it.
If we think even further: In episode IV we see Han Solo trying to shoot Darth Vader in the dining room. There he didn't hesitate to pull the gun first! These things just blew my mind everytime! Why oh why!
Everytime I see a video with a lot of dislikes I expect a scary face to pop up, so I make sure to turn my volume down and read the comments just to be safe...
I was soooo hoping that they had restored this scene to the original where Han is still a badass and not a push-over. After all my hopes were warranted. In the 1997 re-release, Luke does the Emperor death-fall scream as he falls down in SW5 (no really, they dubbed on the actual Emperor's scream). THEN with the re-re-release, the Palpa-scream was gone.
Too bad they didn't correct the mistake in this release. Oh well...
@shadowsa2b The whole "Han shot first " controversy comes from the fact that in the original release Han does in fact shoot first... and it is also the only shot. Greedo doesn't get a chance to fire. All subsequent releases have featured George Lucas tampering with this scene... Greedo shooting first and "missing, Greedo and Han shooting at the same time, and this one, Greedo shooting a split second before.
The whole point of this scene in the original 1977 version was showing that Han was not stupid enough to wait to be shot at first! He did what he did to survive, he was proactive and did the smartest thing he could. Lucas, get a clue and thanks for ruining the franchise with those cartoons you called prequels!
@doug625ut Its die hard fans like you that made him quit starwars, the "catoons" wernt half as bad as all the geeks think they are, yh they are pretty damn bad but it just show how people don't appreciate what George lucas dose.I mean people made a greedo shoots frist
@doug625ut much better then the 1st revamp where he pulls a Son Goku and dodges the lazer, but still the original was better it made him more befitting to his role, he is a space pirate, scoundrel, how does 1 survive as that type of person, BOOM HEAD SHOT!
@doug625ut true, but it was changed in the SE because there were those who complained that 'the hero NEVER shoots first.' So, I get both sides, but I do have to side with the Han shoots first side of things. I have to show a level of irritation, however, that there are a lot of people who say this 1 little scene ruins the entire original trilogy. Frankly, I don't care one way or the other. My only real problem with Greedo shooting first is Han's lame digital head-jerk thing.
@doug625ut Exactly! Lucas said that he didn't want Han to seem so ruthless by shooting first. But the dialogue pretty much makes it a case for self defense.
HAN : Over my dead body
GREEDO : That's exactly the idea, I've been looking forward to this for a long time.
Hmm..sounds like a death-threat to me. And, given that Greedo had a blaster pointed at him, it was well with in his right to fire first. In the REAL version of Star Wars, Han shot first, Greedo never fired!!
@justanotheraccount lol clarified Greedo shot first?? he never shoots at all in the original! Some fool can edit it and give Greedo tits, does that "clarify" that greedo is a chic? Changing the scene simply takes away what was a smart choice by Han to stay alive....now it appears he had to wait to shoot back after luckily being missed! It changes the whole scene entirely! And no, the change does not ruin the movie for me, I just wanna see the it in original form!
@doug625ut Sorry but no. During the filming of the behind the scenes of Crystal skull, Lucas was wearing a shirt proudly displaying "Han shot first." Obviously, Han acting in self defense was the movie equivalent of an editorial mandate.
@doug625ut Not only that but it makes his transformation from rogue to hero a meaningful transition. It shows character development. Han being good from the start just cheapens the character.
Yup. Han Solo can move ever so gracefully at only 671 million MPH, in order to avoid a laser beam... pity they didn't take time and talent to more gracefully (and realistically) frame the scene... it still looks like a bad hack job by some college student.
@thebayareapimp Originally, there was only one shot. This was not a duel. There was not some count to 3 and then draw. Han caught Greedo off guard, shot him under the table and fried him.
I still wonder why they had to add/change the scene. Now it looks like a hack job.
Yeah, the "dodging" still looks rather badly done(could use a few more frames) but I think I finally got over it by watching Han "dodge" a couple dozen times in a row.
GREEDO SHOT FIRST, go to 0:09 and quicly click play and then pause again you'll see fucking greedo wins, well of course not because his aim is like a bantha's anus one.
We should all thank George Lucas for creating the most awesome saga of all time! But noooo all you geeks do is talk shit about him and complain about the prequels and jar jar binks and how he "ruined your childhood" ! you probably dont even pay attention to the story! I mean So what if he made some better animation and CGI changes?! Those are his movies (btw greatest of all times) and he can do what ever he wants with them!
@matrixfan127 Yes, I know that. I know he worked hard, had a lot of great ideas and had to overcome a lot of adversity. But when you look at what he did with the Prequels and what he's doing to the Originals now, you can't help but think that to George, the success of the Original Trilogy is a once in a lifetime event. He cannot duplicate that success, he cannot even do something decent with this material anymore. His actions today are not the mark of a good filmmaker.
@Lorinion Many filmmakers in the past 10-15 years have utilized CGI as an end unto itself. However, back in the days before CGI, effects were limited and filmmakers focused on character and story. That is what made star wars and superman and other fantasy movies exciting-the combination. Since the movie market is driven by ticket sales and CGI effects bring in the money, character and story have become secondary to fantastic effects.
David Fincher uses CGI Nicely-check out Zodiac as an example
@uchiha060 actually no that was W.Wald another Rodian, Greedo was actually a bully to Anakin and almost got into a fight with him W.Wald even warned Greedo about his violent antics
Actually it was Bobba Fett, from the grassy knoll outside the cantina. And Han didn't kill him, it was actually a blaster shot from Jack Ruby, who was on the hologram repository building to clear loose ends.
tanta marisquera que greedo dispara de primero o que han dispara primero vea la pelicula y sean feliz que goerge lucas no va cambiar su vision y todo queda al olvido
Lucas is an artist who can't put the brush down. Instead of moving on he keeps picking at the same painting over and over until what original work existed is buried under layers of digital crap.
Han didn't shoot first, HAN WAS THE ONLY ONE TO SHOOT!!! Greedo was about to shoot but didn't. Han pre-emptively killed him. That's what made him a bad-ass rogue.
That's why I hate the Darth Vader change too... His silent redemption and sacrifice to save his son, is much better than crying like a little pussy for 10 seconds, noooo, NOOOOOOOOO!!!
in the first release Han was the only one (perceptibly) who shot. Later editions show that Greedo shot first but by such a small margin it would be impossible for Han to react to and so Han, even in later editions, would have begun to pull the trigger even before Greedo had fired and so had full intentions of shooting first and would have shot Greedo even if he thought Greedo wouldn't have fired. That said the situation clearly defines Solo actinig in self defense and under duress.
@SamusVSMC Yes thats right. . :o In the "very" first release Han was the "only" one who shot! (by the way. . im not a dumbass, im actualy a smartass!)
I have the pleasure of owning the 2-disc special edition that has the Theatrical Cut. greedo shot first. you can see the shot ricochet off the metal trim next to han's hand right when the shot leaves han's gun
ultraepicman 3 months ago
@ultraepicman This isn't the Theatrical cut, in the theatrical cut, Han shot first.
SgtMustang 3 months ago
We also learn that apparently it is not just lightsabers that deflect blaster shots, apparently the metallic molding is just as effective.

CornyTelecaster49 4 months ago
I would have aimed for his chair too...No one really wants to kill Han...he's just that awesome.

Does anyone else think its not only wrong to change it, but that it makes no sense for Greedo to shoot first? Han is worth more to him alive.

Lorinion 4 months ago 3
@Lorinion Many filmmakers in the past 10-15 years have utilized CGI as an end unto itself. However, back in the days before CGI, effects were limited and filmmakers focused on character and story. That is what made star wars and superman and other fantasy movies exciting-the combination. Since the movie market is driven by ticket sales and CGI effects bring in the money, character and story have become secondary to fantastic effects.
David Fincher uses CGI Nicely-check out Zodiac as an example

@uchiha060 actually no that was W.Wald another Rodian, Greedo was actually a bully to Anakin and almost got into a fight with him W.Wald even warned Greedo about his violent antics
mgk22 4 months ago
Actually it was Bobba Fett, from the grassy knoll outside the cantina. And Han didn't kill him, it was actually a blaster shot from Jack Ruby, who was on the hologram repository building to clear loose ends.
Wafflepudding 4 months ago
This COMPLETELY undermines Han Solo's character. He's a scoundrel, Han shots first because he's a sleazebag who doesn't want to die.
Stupid move Lucas.. stupid move.

Disregarding the change to Han's character, it's also simply awkward to see the same angle twice so quickly, especially when they look little alike.

Lucas is an artist who can't put the brush down. Instead of moving on he keeps picking at the same painting over and over until what original work existed is buried under layers of digital crap.
superflymasterGman 4 months ago
Han didn't shoot first, HAN WAS THE ONLY ONE TO SHOOT!!! Greedo was about to shoot but didn't. Han pre-emptively killed him. That's what made him a bad-ass rogue.
That's why I hate the Darth Vader change too... His silent redemption and sacrifice to save his son, is much better than crying like a little pussy for 10 seconds, noooo, NOOOOOOOOO!!!
Canadarm123 4 months ago
was better when han just blasted the shit out of greedo; gone are the days
syfeye 4 months ago
So now it's gone from Han shot first, to Greedo shot first, to Han and Greedo shooting at the same time. Fucking George Lucas.
insaneapples 4 months ago
in the first release Han was the only one (perceptibly) who shot.
