@msgenesismoon I'm sorry did you not listen AT ALL to the video? everything you just stated goes against what he said in the video. he definitely advocated learning "the basics" or at least a heard start on the basics he did not say we are Americans lets come to a foreign country cause we can sure he did not say BE FLUENT in Korean, but he stressed on learning good amount, I also am not trying to harass or start a conflict, but I think had you paid more attention, you would have understood?
korean is like french to me ...i havent got but i would love to get over there and see that beauty country,,lol,,i think its essential..to live in korea to learn the language!
If anyone wants to learn the foundation / basics of the korean languae via skype I am more than willing to help :) just PM me and we can chat about what you want to learn...this is not spam i am legit as i love to help people learn korean as people onced and still help me :)
@msgenesismoon Not learning the language beforehand doesn't necessarily mean that the we don't care. They may not have access to much media to properly learn it. Self studying with audio is effective sometimes but only if there is a native speaker to learn from. Before I got here I learned the alphabet & some phrases but I didn't know the difference between 어 으 and 오 until AFTER I had been here a few weeks because the romanization was often wrong. I too am still studying hard.
You know, I thought about doing the JET program as a precursor to teaching in Korea. But forget that. First, I have lived in Korea before, and so at least have seen and felt somewhat (I was a student) how life in Korea works. Second, I can speak and read Hangul at the most basic level. Third, I have a friend I consider a big brother whom is a native to Korea. Experienced or not, I will not beat around the bush on this one I think. Now just to figure out how to apply...
@msgenesismoon Absolutely not. I took a Korean class, and tried very hard to learn Korean before I even got to Korea. And continued to study hard once I got there. I strongly believe that foreigners who move to Korea should learn at least the basics. I'm not looking down on Koreans in any way. In fact it was disturbing for me to see how many foreigners live in Korea who don't try to learn any Korean...
@dashapenguin It's best if you have at least two years of college (an associates degree). And you need to be a native English speaker (so you don't have to be American)...
Well yea, you don't _have_ to learn another language to go to a different country, it's just extraordinarily limiting. And kind of a waste really. Why would you go to Korea to eat at McDonalds all the time and talk via translator? Could stay at home.

I think foreigners should learn how to speak Korean in teaching English.. because it is very hepful. You can relate to your students effectively and the response of your students will help you to determine if they understand what you are trying to explain. ..sometimes you learn also from your students to understand their language. Eventhough you can't speak Korean very well, at least you try.
@denielle76 I agree. It may not be necessary to speak Korean, but it really makes life easier, and the students and other people respect you a lot more if you at least try... It's not like you have to learn everything either. Just a little bit goes a long way.
It's a good way to make friends and meet people too
@denielle76 Some of us do know the language and can communicate well, others communicate with broken Korean. But we're encouraged by our programme advisors to use English exclusively and keep our instructions short & simple at least in the beginning. Also your students are meant to speak more than you and that way they pick up colloquial grammar structure and they will build confidence. I try not to use Korean in my classes unless absolutely necessary. Usually your co-teacher only uses it...
@denielle76 ture but majority of school dont want you to teach like that. but i agree with your statement and that is one of the reasons i dont wanna be an english teacher. I wanna be a Korean chef :)
@denielle76 ture but majority of school dont want you to teach like that. but i agree with your statement and that is one of the reasons i dont wanna be an english teacher. I wanna be a Korean chef :) I tried taking japanese in Australia using the all japanese method with body language etc...i learn almost nothing in 1 yr i wasted my money, it wasa a 2 yr course and i could not get a refund of half...
Yeah, I heard about EPIK. I am going to try them too. In the beginning, I was like "I'll go to China" because I've taken a few courses in Chinese, but some one was like "Korea is so much better." Blah, blah, you get paid more. People are nice. Blah, blah. You get paid more. Blah, blah blah. I think I'm into Foot Prints and Korvia Recruiting now. I'll let u knw how it goes though. Thx, dude.
@MegaTsui I worked with footprints as a head teacher at a Korean School, met the owner a couple of times, talked to him often. They were a good organization. I don't know what the score is now. I know a few people who had good experiences in China and were disappointed with Korea. So if money is your main concern try Korea. If money isn't a big concern maybe you should try China.
In China you get paid a lot less, but the cost of living is a lot less too... So you can still live very well. But even so, you can save more money in Korea, if that is your goal.
No, he a botle of clorox or peroxide, perhaps some matches and gasolne...lol. I don't care though. I have already applied to several agencies and they seem interested.

Every foreigners seems to be looked to face Korean language surely difficult maybe,
However fortunately reading Korean letters is very easy, almost everybody can read it just one day. in several hours.
And then just memorize some elementary life's useful phrases. then it could be fine enough.
There are many regular patterns on Korean language thus just learn simple phrase pattern.
And every Korean city hall have English translators so you can get helps through one phone call.

I have an associate's degree. What program did you go through?
I'm hoping to teach English in South Korea next year, and I'm learning Korean now. I've learned how to read and write Hangul already ^^.

I have a question.. Do you need anything to teach English or do you just have to be American to teach English in Korea??
