  • What a ridiculous assumption, just because this movie is based around him being mentally unstable does not hide the fact they made a mistake. If that's the case, any movie that portrays an deranged antisocial personality disorder has permission to make idiotic mistakes, because that's what the movie is about, really? He seemed to overcome his repressed fear of water when he used some to swallow his aspirin pills.

  • @SaosinComeClose Saosin, how many time you went to drink a glass of water and, suddenly, didn't pick up the glass and started to drink from an imaginary glass on your hands? Oh, and you even swallowed the imaginay water!

Is it really a normal behaviour in your life? Cause I just can't see how a person wouldn't notice that "oops, I forgot to pick up the glass and I even drank some imaginary water! I'm so distracted sometimes..."

Seems more like you're a big troll. And I really hope you are.

  • @Chapter81 I do it all the time, even with food and oxygen. Sometimes I breath in but nothing happens and I feel light headed, this makes me feel faint. So I have a word with myself in the mirror and tell myself I can do it, that I'm just like everyone else, but then I remember I'm a freak.

  • @SaosinComeClose prick!

  • @oxyid66 It was a troll, hard man.

  • @SaosinComeClose Seems somewhat too intentional to me to be a mistake. Scorcese is a very experienced director. It might not be about his repressed fear of water, but it's certainly a great close reading detail with regard to his construction of the reality surrounding him.

  • Fire represents insanity in the film, water represents reality. Dolores burning the apartment down etc is all fiction and when he finds Rachel Solando in the cave there's a fire present showing how he's imagining it, water symbolises the actuality of what's going on, the absence of water there shows the absence of reality :)

  • It isn't half full in the 2nd shot. It is the way the cup is made with an indentation at that height.

  • right hand ... left hand... and few seconds left between the two images. it's not very good

  • wow. ive seen this movie a thousand times and never noticed that she wasnt holding anything. i guess im retarded

  • invisible glass to give the plot a sense and continuity error

  • When I first saw this I thought my eyes were wrong...then I realized it was the begining of the dream world

  • Teddy imagined his partner left to get a glass of water, when he was there that entire time.

  • @Tiger66261 I thought that's what it was too. You know, that there "is no glass" type thing. And the switching hands between drinking and putting down is probably a harmless unintentional continuity error.

  • If you have seen this movie then you know that Andrew is only making up "teddy".

Andrew is terrified of water cos his wife drowned his kids. When the woman drinks the camera shoots it from Andrew/Teddys point of view and he is blocking out the water from his fantasy world because he is terrified of water.

  • @ExtraStrongGeneral Then why isn't he afraid of swimming in the ocean?

  • @calebthegreat08 it might be because its a critical moment in his fantasy, or as simple as a hole in the plot...

  • Paranormal? hahaa, there is no glass then the glass is empty and then it has water again. yeah .. paranormal..

  • I think it's because Teddy is in a dream-like reality, and his view on the world becomes inconsistent sometimes.

  • 0:6 she drank from no glass? never understood this part

  • Wtf was this recorded from a gameboy?

  • @22soultaker Wtf was this commented by a troll?

  • @Chapter81 Epic response.

  • @22soultaker This has decent quality dude.

  • @22soultaker ......

  • wtf

  • I've seen this movie today... There's a lot of "continuity issues", which I think they put there on purpose to make the film original...

  • also, in the dream sequence scene,Teddy's wife does the same thing with the bottle of alcohol :O

  • Another mystery in the film: At the ending, when Teddy is going up on the stairs in the lighthouse the wall behind him is still. I'm sure there are a couple of more like this one. Great movie, one of my favorites.

  • God, after watching that makes me very thirsty.

  • well how come that army dude says hes known him for hundreds of years??

  • there wasn't a glass in her right hand when she was drinking

  • Think about the order in which these shots would have been filmed. Couple that with the incredibly fast editing, and the camera MAKING SURE TO SHOW the empty glass. There was no way this was a mistake, made by Marty, of all people.

  • The water was drugged. Perhaps a clue to Teddy?

  • @TheTWiiiST No, the ending was real. It's to show that the whole thing is a set up act in honor of Teddy - that he creates the glass himself, just like he turned the plastic gun into a real gun in his head.

  • its to show the beginning of the effects of the psychoactive drugs thats been given to leo

  • You all have to remember that the shot of her drinking from "the glass" is from Leo's point of view, and in this movie his character is crazy.

  • wait...ther is no glass!!!!

  • I've never noticed that there's no glass O_O

  • it's just to make the film more confusing, and to throw you off a bit more

  • well a lot of you are forgetting that she is crazy which is why she is there.

  • he is crazy =no glass

  • how could you make such a mistake? that's isn't possible

you take a glass of water and then you just put your like you hold something to your mouth and go on? yeaaah right!

  • its added in on purpose to add an under current of paranormal activity in it, you can tell this by the way she puts the glass down, she puts it down quite hard and quick, now why would they video her putting a glass down if they didnt need to? i agree with MetalHead7517 :P

  • So why don't we see the glass?

Those who've seen the film know teddy can't handle reality, he represses his fears and memories until he loses all sense of time/identity.

Notice the camera when the lady is drinking, it is shot entirely from the perspective of Teddy. We're seeing this through his eyes. His fear of water is a major theme in the film; It is essentially what killed his children. So by doing this, Scorsese is further showing Teddy's repression of his fears, I.E water.

    Hope that helps!

  • @thisisanfield8 Thats was very cleaver :) Thank you... Now i am scared.

  • @thisisanfield8 Good point. But why does he swim through the water at the end to get to the lighthouse?

  • @thisisanfield8 I didn't catch that. Thanks. Do you have any insight to why she grabs it and drinks it with her right hand and places it with her left? The fear of water thing. He had no problem swimming to that lighthouse.......

  • @polomil23 Probably just to highlight the fragility of Teddy's mind. He's paranoid and delusional. The discontinuity in editing is supposed to represent the discontinuity of Teddy's mind set.

You're right, he didn't have a problem swimming to the lighthouse. But he was forced to because of the circumstance, he had to confront his fears. When he jumps in the water he makes a step closer to the lighthouse, and a step closer to realising the truth...

  • @thisisanfield8

Maybe that's why earlier, in Sydow's room, he preferred to drink water rather than alcohol, and held the glass calmly in his hand?

I wonder how that guy goes through the day without drinking any water... does he just drink tea all the time, like I do?

Nah, whatever the interpretation of this detail, it's GOT to be a bit more clever than that. Maybe his subconscious remembered that Chuck is a shrink, and a shrink might give a delusional patient an imaginary glass of water...

  • @twooffour Many people have a fear of swimming, it's not going to stop them from drinking water though.

Does it have to be a little more clever than that? It's a split second this scene, subliminal almost. Purely supposed makes us feel a little uneasy & tense and question what may or may not have seen

Good interpretation about Chuck & there is no right or wrong answer. We're introduced to Teddy in an almost hysterical state due to water though remember

    Pull yourself together Teddy

  • ... for some kind of reason. Maybe an imaginary glass helps her calm down better? It's not convincing, but the subconscious basically just tries to slip in a clue that COULD point to such a conclusion.

This is pretty contrived and cheesy, but still better than "Teddy is afraid of water."

Or, the fact that she secretly gives him a note fits into his delusion, but his subconscious tries to remind him that she's insane... and Chuck is "part of it" (especially as she didn't trust him, either).

  • @thisisanfield8 Wow, i feel like an idiot, never saw that!

  • @thisisanfield8 yah great point, however if u notice she acts like the glass is in her right hand initially but when it shows the camera from her angle it's in her left hand... why?

  • This is most definitelty not a mistake, infact a very intricate and calculated piece of editing; blink and you'll miss it.

At six seconds in Scorsese uses a jump cut (a violation of classical continuity editing); notice how harsh the transition is. The lady is drinking from a glass, then before we see her finish drinking the shot abruptly switches to her slamming it down. Bad continuity, as it's known, features a lot in his works. This further emphasises teddys struggle with identity and time.

  • This def. has to do with the water

  • honestly i dont really care if it was a mistake or not... i laughed very hard and find it funny... but still a very good movie.

  • Yes, it obviously was done intentionally. There are many things in the film that appear-cut-disappear in reality and in dreams and flashbacks to keep the viewer guessing at what is real and what is fiction from the subjective viewpoint and standpoint of Ted whom we the audience are living through.

  • Class film, theres loads of clues throughout that tell you that he's the crazy one, for instance at the start, when they get onto the island, all the guards are edgy and have their weapons out, this is because of HIM. the top guard saying he cant go anywhere without him, and when they are out on the "search" for the woman, its apparent that the guards arent really doing much searching, because theres no woman to search for! theyd also never send a marshall to look for a missing mental patient!

  • @Metalhead7517 I think it’s actually you who 'fails' if you think a psychological hallucination/deception is paranormal.

  • he wasnt crazy. he was a sane marshall and an ex nazi hunter and he walked right into a nazi infested mental hospital (notice the german accent of the head psychiatrist) so what do you think they are gonna try to do to him duhh

  • When you can make a movie like Shutter Island, you're not gonna make a stupid mistake like that. I think "RazzWasHere" is right. It's a weird scene because Leo's character is schizophrenic. That's why we see this scene through the eyes of his character. At least that's what I think about it.

  • He's schyzophrenic, so yeah. Maybe he just imagined the whole scene, hence why certain things didn't add up.

  • If you pause it at 0:03 you notice that she looks directly at the camera giving us a hint that this shot is of his POV. I think we can safely presume this is a hint that he is refusing to accept reality of his experience regarding water. Like a selective memory or reality. It just another clue to first time viewer of the film that Teddy is not who he thinks he is or that he is blocking out certain truths about himself. Like when the doc gives him a glance when he is discussing drowning

  • she picks it up with her right hand (empty) and drops it with her left hand (glass) what is there to not understand?

  • maybe she just faked drinking because she didn't want to drink drugs?

  • 1st of all when she picks up to drink the glass there isnt a cup in her hand. then she puts it down with another hand

  • Also, notice the pre-existing water rings on the table, as if the glass had already been there. Twice.

  • Hands her a full glass of water, which she grabs with her right hand, but drinks from nothing, then sets an empty glass down with her left. Another angle, we see a half-full glass. Earlier, Teddy scribbles so hard he tears the paper, but later it's not torn. Teddy "swears" he had his cigarettes in his jacket, and his partner offers him some of his own. Not mistakes, just the result of several cycles of role playing mixing together.

  • go watch the departed and follow jack nicholsons magical cigarette. Scorsesse just does this stuff

  • Its not a mistake, in theory. Filmmakers are VERY CAREFUL about each specific shot, direction, prop, etc, etc. Its a PSYCHOLOGICAL THILLER, there is a high level or though-provoking shots within the film.

Each individual frame is unique in its own way. However, I can't explain what is actually happening with the wrong hand and half full cup.

  • the crazy lady is the other kid's mom from Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves :o

  • Some people just can't see the value of a glass of water.

  • I don't think it was a mistake. I noticed this the second time I watched the film (RIGHT NOW) and tried to piece why. Only thing I can think of is the fact that she has cloth wrapped around her wrist. Maybe she was on suicide watch? A cutter. So maybe she couldn't have a glass. Also maybe it's her and DiCaprio that suffer from the same delusion. She murdered her husband with an axe and we can see that the orderly's and nurses were ready to stick her with a needle.

  • The director isn't stupid. I believe it was meant to be that way. The same reason the director made sure to confuse the hell out of me the first three times I watched it, I thought I was going crazy because I couldn't figure out who I could trust in this movie. I became paranoid myself! Poor Leo Cap's character...

  • It is intentional. Teddy's wife has a bottle of whisky in her hand in the first part of the dream scene, then the camera cuts back to her and it's disappeared.

  • aaaah it was not my imagination :D

  • Wow, i never noticed that before.

  • when she drinks from nothing, it's from teddy's pov

when she put the empty glass it down, it's from her pov

when we see the glass half full it's from the observer's(us) pov

    she could be sane/insane

    teddy could be sane/insane

    we/director/camera are sane

  • @vwazp MAN, YOU ARE FUCKING INTELLIGENT, WHAT YOU SAID MAKES 100% SENSE.

THANKS A LOT TO OPEN MY EYES.

    HUGS FROM RIO DE JANEIRO!

  • It shows how his mind is deteriorating at shutter island. there are so many other scenes like this. i cant believe people actually think this is a mistake or goof. what a bunch of idiots.

  • You think this was a mistake? Are you retarded? Did you not see all the other paranormal content in this movie? This fits in perfectly. Also, think about them filming the movie, why would they film, let alone PRINT a scene where the actress didn't actually pick up the glass? You all fail.

  • @Metalhead7517 You should address your comment to people who think it was a mistake. In any moment I said that I think it was a mistake. I pretty much agree with PaytonWestlake's analysis and knew from the very beginning that the movie has a lot of "paranormal content", as you put it.

  • @Chapter81 I think Metalhead7517 is too embarassed to apologize... either that or he'll dance his way around it.

  • @Chapter81 If you know other "mysteries", please tell us, or just me... I would be a pleasure. I never saw this, whereas I really often see some scenes again. But not this one in particular, I admet.

  • @Metalhead7517 both of you dummies fail. there was nothing paranormal about this film. it was a complete and total psychological film. idiots

  • @Metalhead7517 You think movies are 'printed', yet we all fail?

  • @punkrock101official Ever heard a director yell "That's good, print that" after a good take, you fucking imbecile? If i had a gun on a boat, I'd shoot you.

  • @Metalhead7517 On a boat? Why a boat?

  • no not mistakes !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :@ miss ross said and she is super cool it is editing. My english page says "editing-disappearing glass"

Do you not watch a movie and think this is symbolism 'cus i do because i'm not an idiot i look deeper in movies other than plot . GOD!! IDIOTS!!

  • if you look closely she puts down an empty glass but it then cuts to the glass being half full :O

  • I KNEW IT.

    ITS THE FUCKING GLASS NINJAS.

  • Leonardo was a marshall he speaks German

  • i instantly thought after watching this film about the first scene where Teddy says - 'pull yourself together Teddy, pull yourself together' i think you can work out the rest....

  • its clues no mistake

  • Someone read in a magazine that: An assistant mistakenly removed the glass before the scene was shot. The actress didn't realise until she came to pick it up, so she just went through the motions anyway rather that disrupt the scene (I suppose she thought that bit could be cut in later, rather than reshoot a whole scene). But when Scorsese watched the rushes, he thought it looked so cool that he wanted it left in! He thought it added to the generally creepy feel of the whole film.

  • @27p16and41p666 if that really happened, then director is awesome.

  • yeah i thought i saw something wrong when i first saw it but then i was like what the point

  • MIND BLOWN!!

  • Thumbs up if you were also looking for other mystery scenes like fight club.

  • It's not a mistake. It's just to show that everything around Teddy is not what it seems to be; that they're all just putting on an charade for his benefit.

  • I think they did this just to make us crazy. So we will all one day end up on shudder island just from the missing glass scene.

  • Another scene i noticed is when Teddy is talking to George and the camera is behind tedy george is scratching his head but when its behind him his hand is on the cell door

  • @Tylerd172 just continuity issues, pretty bad. happens a few other places in the movie too.

  • Ok, fire and wather story is OK. Plastic ang glass OK. But "drinking" with right hand and puting down with left hand???? This is a MISTAKE.

  • @paslolas Your spelling and grammar are the mistakes.

  • @paslolas

    your a dumbass

  • @paslolas She never has anything in her right hand...

  • @paslolas or is it?

  • @paslolas you ever drink from your right hand then transfer to your left and put it down? common occurence

  • @paslolas scorsese doesn't make mistakes bitch.

  • @paslolas Cant u switch the glass from the right hand to the left?

  • @star10159 That makes sense. =| Let me pick up a glass with my right hand and when I'm done, use my left hand to place is just a few inches to my left.

    ... >_>

  • @paslolas

also a clever ploy. Scorsese uses quick cuts and dodgey editing to represent the distortion of Teddy's reality.

I know because I heard it from the man's mouth.

  • @paslolas It's even more obvious this way. Teddy was told he was going to talk to some crazy people. That, added with the fact that water fuels his delusional side, created a sort of "weird dreaming moment". When the glass *booms* onto the table, Teddy's little daydream suddenly comes to an end.

  • This would be agiant mistake. I dont think Mr. Scorsese could do a mistake like this. This is Direct!

  • how can anybody think its a mistake? you think she forgot to pick up the glass? wtf. stupid ass people

  • On the radio (with the film's producer) they were saying about how it was a mistake at the time, but they let it run because Scorsese thought that it would put the audience on edge.

  • @mimimirwitch But notice how the "interpretive" intellectuals keep on "interpreting". Oh well it gives them something to do anyway.

  • they wouldnt allow a glass in a mental institution eejits.... theyd use plastic cups. its a hallucination

  • dasd

  • can anybody tell me the name of this mental disorder....????

  • It makes so much sense now, why they put so much emphasis on the glass. o__o

  • i can see why this would have been intentional, but surely she would have put it down with her right hand?

  • martin scorsese, you clever bastard

  • I've just been mindf*cked again. I love this movie.

  • It's not a mistake, how would she forget to pick up a glass?

And other people said they forgot to add the glass in post-production..

Why would they not just film her with a glass instead of CGI'ing it, it's a lot easier.

Remember, she is in a mental asylum, she's craaazy!

As for other "mistakes" - they aren't mistakes. They just had to make sure on the first viewing, the audience would believe Teddy was a marshall but on second viewing, it was totally believable he was a patient.

  • other moments are when cario is smoking a cigarette the time goes backward, and last one I found is when caprio is walking up in the tower the background doesen`t tourn even when he is walking up an spiral staircase.

again sorry for my bad english but I hope you understand the text I wrote

  • I`m sure that this wasn`t a mistake at first she doesn`t have a Glass in her Hand, while she`s drinking, then there are two Circles from the wather, but she never placed it there. an at last there is again wather in the Glass.

sorry for my bad english but I hpe you understand the text I wrote

  • in the movie, water represents truth. and since andrew cant face the truth, he has a problem with water (his seasickness) so, i think this scene is a message from the director. since the lady isnt telling the truth, and water represents truth, she cant be seen with actaul water. any thoughts?

  • @jshplfry This is probably the best explanation - I've read elsewhere that water represents truth. Fire is the opposite, meaning lies.

  • @jshplfry I think I can add to that the fact that his children drowned, that's the main reason why he can't handle water (I didn't notice that up till now but your comment triggered some things :))

  • it's kinda simple actually. in the movie, fire represents andrews insanity, everytime there is a fire, a lit match, a car explosion he has a halucination of his wife or daughter. so, water being the opposite of fire, water represents truth, as that i opposite of insanity. everytime andrew comes into cantact with water, he becomes sick or has migraines ( remember the seasickness?) its because his brain cant handle the truth.

  • the drinking "part" is a part of role.. they're trying help andrew to come back to reality..

  • And I totally understand the meaning of this scene. I'm not sure if the woman was actually crazy, but by calling him marshal and drinking from nothing, she may have been in on the attempt to get DiCaprio back to reality.

  • I'm surrounded by oblivious people. I was the only one of 5 people that I knew saw the movie that had noticed this.

  • @Ryannihilation Theyre not mistakes, it is clues. Teddy (or edward, whatever) is insane and it is all hints about his mental state.. these are done on purpose.

  • lol she was drinking with her right hand and put down the drink with her left :|

  • I don't think any of this is a mistake: The reality of Teddys story is manifested physically in water (he gets sea sick) while his avoidance of truth is manifested by fire (The cave & ward C scenes). Psychologically Teddy is blocking out the water. This is why we see no water in this scene. Teddy doent wish to see the water & therefore we do not. Scorsese is telling us that Teddy cannot "swallow" the truth. The glass remains full to show the truth is still in font of Teddy after the interview.

  • @PaytonWestlake Remarkable perception. Yes, you are absolutely right.

  • @PaytonWestlake

    Impressive interpretation!

  • @PaytonWestlake great insight.

  • @PaytonWestlake

Wow! That makes a lot of sense! I always thought the glass disappeared. I wasn't sure if it was a glitch or not, out of the many times I saw the movie. I wonder how many people actually saw the glass disappear? It happens so quickly lol

  • @PaytonWestlake Exactly. Well put. Thats gotta be it.

  • @PaytonWestlake true fire symbols his roleplaying game and water his reality

  • @PaytonWestlake bullshit... in this movie is to many mistakes, look at the childrens when they are on the ground... on their legs and hands.

  • @PaytonWestlake

Over analyzed to say the least

  • @PaytonWestlake if teddy wants to avoid the bad memories of water, why didn't teddy then just imagine her drinking from an empty glass?

  • @vwazp What difference does it make? Empty Glass or No Glass, its the same effect.

  • @PaytonWestlake well said. i think the fact that his three children were drowned and he had to wade through a lake to revive/retrieve them may possibly explain another reason why he had issues with water

  • @artestra I didnt have space to go into detail on it before but you're spot on. It's a facinating movie. I also think that Ward C symbolises his subconscience. It is filled with dark passages, He doesnt know his way around and it's where he begins to realise the truth by speaking to Noyce. during this conversation he continuously lights matches as he tries desperately to cling to the fire which symbolises the lie he is living.

  • @PaytonWestlake wait...what?

  • @Heroscrest1 What isn't a question. you'll have to be a bit more specific.

  • @PaytonWestlake

eh, i just don't understand how you get all that from a few scenes...its an interesting theory; one that i have contemplated...but i don't get how you assume the whole 'water' bit

i get the fire, but maybe you could help me understand where your coming from on the whole 'water' bit

  • @Heroscrest1 He gets sea sick its only water. Its alot of water we dont see Teddy swallow water with his asprin Teddys drinks soda not alcohol or water Mr Breen gave water to his victim Teddys wife burns to ash but he has water in his hands Ward C (Teddys subconscious) may flood After drinking water he dreams of the Kids in water (but in reverse) He Looks at his hands in shower He totally immerses in water before learning the truth Teddy found his kids in a watery grave (hence the connection)
  • @PaytonWestlake dang..well looks like im gonna have to watch the movie again

thanks for opening my eyes to this film

  • @PaytonWestlake ... Thats a good interpretation. It doesnt discount the fact that She drank with the right and put the glass down with the left. Editing and/or continuity error. But its Scorcese. You cant make an omelette without breaking a few eggs. Brilliant Film, regardless.

  • @SuperOmnicron i thinks that there is also a story behind that right and left hand thing

  • @PaytonWestlake the glass doesn't 'remain full'. you clearly see, and hear, her set down an empty glass.......it was never full in the first place.

  • @killa420herb I said "remains full" because it looks like there is water in the glass when she walks away. It appears to me that the shot is from Teddy's POV, he refuses to recognise the water, and thats why she puts down an empty glass. When we return to the neutral camera shot there is water still in the glass IMO

  • @PaytonWestlake Well said...
