  • The media fucks with your brain, very deep yet depressing

  • The souls that God has given us, our spirits. Our spirits, which found a way to swim through the immense network and live in the infinity of space. Is not the human body a mere shell, a form of existence all too small and weak for consciousness with such vast reach and potential?

  • Awkward moment when you watched this episode on television..

  • @Figs3 It's just ironic. The message is to fight for your own beliefs and don't get so wrapped up in what TV tries to tell you.

  • Does anyone have any idea what music is used here?

I would give up a finger to know where I can find it.

  • @Goatmon That's "23 Hanashi"!

  • @tosyalist Thank you so much! <3

  • @Goatmon I expect a finger. :p

  • @tosyalist I'll find a donor. =D

  • this is such a great and touching episode i always cry when i see it ty for posting it :)

  • Don't you get it? God didn't create humans, no it's humans who created god.

  • no what are you doing what! blwwwwwwww ERROR

  • @1993ibay the TV speech is hypothesizing that people want to believe in something with a "higher meaning" than the physical world they inhabit. that "something" can be God, or the "dramatic fantasies" that they see on TV, but Londas is saying that they serve the same purpose--to provide delusional escapism from the real world.

  • Can anyone explain what the t.v speech was all about and what does Spike mean when he says "Your a kid with a toy..."?

    Please answer.

  • @1993ibay

Spike is merely pointing out Londas' hypocrisy. Londas criticizes people for their belief in God (or "creation of God" if you will) and how TV has destroyed people's sense of reality, but Londas himself is using TV to escape his reality of being a vegetable. not only that, he is re-inventing his image as a God-like figure, thus "creating God" himself. it's doubly ironic. the point of it all is that, no matter how ethereal our souls may be, we are still limited by our physical bodies

  • @shsmvdon Thank so much friend.

  • Anyone who thinks that Cowboy Bebop supports Landos' statements is a fool.

  • PAPAAAAAGHHHH.

  • Lord Zedd

  • aww Anime one of my reasons for atheism

  • it weird that a show like this can really make you question you fate and religionand how they kinda shed light on things that some are afriad to ask annd your life or at least it did to me

  • 0:48 OH GOD EDWARD IS SO ADORABLE SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

  • reminds me of serial experiments lain. love that anime

  • just saw this episode on adult swim. so great, best cowboy bebop epidsode ive ever seen

  • This is, hands down, one of my fav episodes of Cowboy Bebop. Hell, it's one of my fav episodes of ANY series - animated or otherwise.

  • i dont need to believe in a god. I have my own strength to live and move on.

  • "God didn't create humans. No, it's humans who created God." THANK YOU LONDAS.

  • They so based Londas off of Shoko Asahara.

  • television...internet...they're pretty much one and the same, using visual and sound stimula to control their viewer for long extended periods of time.

  • @dchris1990 Books?

All of art is the same. There is nothing in this universe, no meaning. The only reason we exist and cling to life is because those that didn't died, and failed to reproduce. Pure, objective reality is void and empty.

  • I once had to talk about television in class, and this was the basis for my speech

  • There's some truth to the television being related to religion or related to religious experience.

Traditionally, nearly all human kind has always worshiped and/or been cultivated by religion for centuries and even today.

Then after the invention of television, it's primarily another entity that nearly grasps any human's attention by preaching, or televising, what one should learn, how to act, what to feel, what to possess, and even what to believe in.

  • do you want to know the greatest but also the worst device humans have invented? its television, television controls people by bombarding them with information until they lose their sense of reality, now television itself has become a new religion.

  • tell me, why do you think people believe in God?

    Because they WANT to...

I think atheists and agnostics should take a bit of time to understand why religion will most likely always be part and integral to the human mind.

And i think religious people should try to understand why religion is not an answer to those who hate illusion

  • @dchris1990 - There's a difference between believing in a god/higher power/whatever and believing in a religion. "God" is one of man's answers to the unknown, just like the assumptions atheists make about what happened before the Big Bang (if anything) or how the matter and laws came to be. I think being a theist, atheist, agnostic, or anything else is partially influenced by one's psyche. Some people find the idea of a higher power comforting while others find it frightening or abhorrent.

  • if he thinks television is bad.. wait until he sees facebook....

  • Comment removed

  • 4:42 O.o

  • this opened my eyes when i was thirteen, i am agnostic thanks to this episode (which means im an athiest without balls)

  • This episode always left me feeling so empty....

Some kid gets fucked up and becomes worse than a vegetable; stuck with his mind intact but completely unable to physically act anymore.

In his torment, he finds solace in the web and eventually becomes obsessed with pushing his hell onto others.

Of course, he had to be stopped, but still... I feel so bad for him. What life could be worse than a prison of your own incapacitated body? Poor kid. :/

  • freakin amazing

  • This episode subconsciously shaped my views forever as a child and even now. Simply amazing, i appreicate your uploading of this.

  • This is why I consider Cowboy Bebop to be one of the greatest animes ever. Deep philosophical messages with action to boot! Television controls the minds of millions and teaches people what to be. In the process, they lose touch with themselves and serve these "celebrities."

  • that was so weird and so cool and awesome at the same time i love it

  • this episode had so many obvious subliminal messages it made my stomach hurt

  • Jet killed me in this scene. My fave character is Jet...it is too funny))

  • except now people get most of their information from the internet, not television anymore

  • @Jameszhangdude not exactly mate , when you get down to it . A house hold spends more times watching television , that on the internet . A traditional home has 4 to 3 , and one computer . Since you cant have more than one person on it . Television wins through

  • @Sasoriemo well nowadays a lot of people also have personal laptops. It really depends which kind of traditional family you're talking about. I don't know a whole lot of people who watch TV or the news when they got the internet. Btw, if you're wondering, I come from a middle class, techy background.

  • @Jameszhangdude Aye , then that could be our issue mate . We just got this magical wonder from beyond a year to three ago . Hmm , true . But I still like to believe the average American Family spends more time on the TV . But I can see your point .

  • @Sasoriemo people still watch TV I'm sure, but with news and information at our fingertips via laptops and iPhones, the internet is just way faster than the news stations on TV. But for entertainment purposes like watching that new episode of Glee or Dancing with the Stars, we still have the TV for that. Times have been changing man, changing real fast.

  • @Sasoriemo While most people actively watch television in one sitting more than the internet, the fact that the internet is more integral to our lives way outweighs the usage of television. Not only is internet used for accessible knowledge but it governs a great portion of the physical world, as well. The majority of world economics is digital now. Plenty of businesses are all internet based. Social networks have taken over our lives. Honetly, the internet itself is becoming quite god-like.

  • Ed made me laugh in this episode.

  • Reminds me of VideoDrome

  • this proable one the best episodes in the series i like when edd look back says this time i hope you have sweet dreams :)

  • So dope philosophically, humans created god. Fucking awesome.

  • Brain Scratch is one of the best episodes of any anime. It has an idea that many try but none have pulled off in such an amazing way.

  • damn that's deep...

  • He is quoting Freud's theory on Religion and at 3:10 he is quoting Jean Balliuard's theory of hyper reality, but yea it is deep

  • also, maybe Heidegger's idea of technology in terms of "enframing" + standing reserve at 3:10 somewhat?

  • @Dumpstermuffin1 And if one want's to make the claim that they systematically "killed" the personality of Londes, who was portraying himself as a God-like entity, then you can always through a little Nietzsche in there, too.

  • reality is..

    a six dollar burger

    a guitar

    the sky

    cats

    YOU

  • the saund is great

  • Just realized today that he was probably modeled after the Heaven's Gate Cult leader.

  • very sad.

  • This is probably one of the best and most profound ideas presented in pretty much all of anime. Very good episode imo. The whole television thing is crap but the idea of existence not physical was deep.

  • Yeah but we have no way of proving it one way or another.

    It's really all theory atm.

  • I agree...though it's funny, because rather than only television, it is also the internet that has a vast control of what information we receive.

But yes, the concepts in this episode are quite deep. I've read reviews for bebop saying it isn't particularly deep...and, wow. I was wondering if they watched the same show I did. The overall theme of this show is deep. (letting go of the past, what is life but merely a dream, etc.)

  • @PsiReasoning I agree, this type of opinion can change minds, in the current day especially. It just goes to show that even the most handicapped of people in the future will be able to conjure up even the greatest followings.

  • @PsiReasoning yeah the tv thing is supposed to be bullshit BECAUSE that guy is the only one who believes that AND he is obviously WRONG.

  • @PsiReasoning Actually, what he said about how people worship television and its celeberities is actually true. We do treat television as a God. And we DO worship it. So what are you talking about?

  • This is a touching episode. There's an episode of X Files named " The field where I died. " that did that to me. It reminds me of how fragile life is, and how

    delicate emotions can be.

  • Haha, what a coincidence, i just watched that episode yesterday :D and i totally agree!

Also, Cancer man was a gestapo, that me me lol :p

  • I was listening to 23 Hanashi from the box set, with the dialog. It's one of my favorite songs from the series. So I decided to look up the episode, to remember what the dialog meant in English.

As I was watching, at the portion where Spangen starts to get disconnected...I just started fucking crying. It hit me like a brick out of nowhere, I just started sobbing and couldn't stop for minutes. And I really...really don't know why.

  • Ah! Is that the name of that song that takes place in this part of the episode?! Thanks so much! I couldn't think of what it was, let alone knew where to begin searching.

This is a great part in the CB series! I loved the entire series.

  • Hey man maybe that was blocked up Emotion... It sometimes just gets triggered by the weirdest things, like a video :p

Bet you felt lots better after!

Also yeah the song is hanashi, which is also the title of the episode, which means 23, which is also the number of the episode :p

  • @tosyalist

I've felt that with CB, triggered by this video and this part of this series often. Wish I had somebody to share the phyilisophical part of this series with.

  • @StrangeSibby It's because it's sad.

  • This is also my favorite scene of the entire series.

Also, as a Spike and Faye fan, it's so sweet to see him actually show concern when he waits for her to wake up. Guh.

    Brain Scratch = EPIC episode.

  • 4:44 he becomes Dr Andross from Star Fox SNES!

  • Haha, you made me lol

  • Well, it does look like him, doesn't it. I mean the old face with the simple rendering and grey face and stuff. That looked ust like him.

  • I guess after being defeated by Star Fox, he went from being a mad scientist into a mad cult leader.

  • That makes sense

  • My favourite episode too, with the main characters' storyline ones. And there is some piece of Lain SR inside though yes. :)

  • Edward was off the chain in this episode.

  • the whole episode is a referenz to serial experiments lain.^^

  • @khosrow It's actually a reference to the late 1990's religious cult called "Heaven's Gate".

  • @khosrow: Thank You!

I actually saw this comment for the first time today, and decided to check Serial Experiments Lain! Looking awesome so far...gonna be a long night :)

  • @tosyalist i hope you enjoyed it.^^

  • @khosrow Is it a reference to it? Or just similar to it? Just because ideology-wise, they're not really similar .. at all.

  • Personal favorite episode, next to The Real Folk Blues, of course ;D.

  • Haha real folk blues is my least favourite episode, but ofcourse not cause it sucks or anything(it's one of the best!), just cause it's the end of the series, it's so sad, and it made me feel depressed like 2 days after watching it.

  • omg me too :(

  • Next to Toys in the Attic(which STILL confuses me!),The Juptier Jazz,Sympythy for the devil Waltz for Venus,Heavy Metal Queen, And the last episode, this is one of my favs. Thanks for putting it up

  • No problem mate

  • I still a little confused as to how he managed to take control of Spike and the other Bounty Hunters. Was it because he told them that TV controls all and since there was a huge pile of them they felt completely overwhelmed?

  • I'm actually betting that the huge amount of televisions would be a lot brighter than drawn (for example, my CRT monitor lights the room when the lights are all out). The eyes become strained after a time just watching ONE screen, so imagine....50? 60? So, that explains the blurry vision. Dunnoa bout the coma, or death. Your guess is as good as mine.

  • He used some kind of a high frequency sound wave to hypnotize the people and put them to sleep.

I strongly agree with his assessment of reality though. Humans put their own potential and reality to the wayside to worship the fabricated world of pop culture. How sad and tragic a way for such a wonderful and magnificent civilization to end.

  • What's great is that Londes (weird TV screen guy) is voiced by the same man that voiced Lord Zedd from the old Power Rangers episodes.

His last line before the credits is my favorite quote of the entire series.

  • Yeah, that last line rules.

  • This show is my favorite show of all time, and the god/television speech is one of the best in the series. This show really makes me think deeply about life, i love it

  • Well, the entire show didn't make me think about life, only this episode.

  • This is the one episode of Bebop I have neevr seen

  • Oh boy you should, it's on of my favourite's

  • my God,

    so great..

    thanks for uploading ;)

  • This, ballad of fallen angels, sympythy for the devil, jupiter jazz 1 and 2 and why would you ever leave out the real folk blues are may favorite episodes ^_^

  • Who's the weirdo on the t.v. screen?

  • He's actually the imagination of the hacker kid...The kid started dreaming, thats all he could do.

  • Actually it was the machine he was hooked up to, apparently someone must have been a sympathizer of the comatose hacker and may have tampered with the machine which was just used to keep him alive, either that or his consciousness kept creating programs and used that machine as a hub to branch out beyond the limits his body was in. "Dreaming" as people would put it.

  • The kid who was turned into a "vegetable" was connected to a network. From there, he found a way to broadcast himself as an old bald man with a dot on his head. The people who believed the things he preached then formed a religion.

  • agree

  • Some Anime transcends the genre...

    this is a perfect example.

Bebop truly is one the best ever.

  • Total agree
