  • Playing it now in middle school band!! Absolutely love it but not as much as Hawaii 5-0!!

  • We're playing it now! I love my tympani part for it.

  • Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee! It doesn't look hard on the paper, but then you have to count it!

  • Doing this for my middle school band. Hopefully we're not THAT screwed...

  • @imonlyinforthevideos Your screwed.

  • I played this my Junior year of High School, I played the snare part as well.

  • First song I played with the high school band as an 8th grader. I had the tenor drum part. It's kind of a conversation between the tenor drum and the snare drum at 3:41. It's pretty kick ass.

  • Were playing this for nyssma at our High School. It a great piece.I play Bari and Alto Sax.

  • Playing this in February! !Clarinet all day!

  • i have to learn this by tomorrow. i have to learn it on bells and on tenor drum. i have a test on it.i;m in the Bellflower High School Marching Band<3

  • I remeber this song. We HATED it. Our band director put it in as a favor to the percussionists. Its not technically difficult but it is an absolute nightmare to count. Took our high school band quite a while....

  • We're playing this now in 9th grade for select band. It's such an awesome piece. I play Alto Saxophone 1.

  • Just got new sheet music to replace the crappy 50 year old ones we have at our school!! :D

  • We played this...in 8th grade. At half the speed and with very little quality. -.- This is NOT a middle school song.

  • We played this when I was in 10th grade, I was a percussionist. As a senior, I had to conduct a piece at our spring concert. I chose this one. Director thought I was crazy, tried to talk me out of it. You think its fun playing this song. Conducting this was the time of my life! That was in 1984. All I remember is nervous as hell on the downbeat, and standing ovation from crowd AND the band at the end. We may have sounded great, or horrible. Who knows. It was fun. Thanks for posting this!

  • This is our audition song for wind ensemble and I'm in 7th grade :-/ but hey its really fun

  • Am I the only one who thinks "Vaclav Nelhybel" is like the coolest name EVER!

  • So many inconsistent rests! I'm playing 1st Clarinet. It's a counting nightmare, but still a great song.

  • Epic song. Our conductor did some research and it turns out that Nelhybel wrote this song intending to pit the woodwinds against the brass, with percussion driving the battle. AWESOMENESS!!!

  • This song is cool I'm playing this now in 8th grade!

  • I LOVE THIS SONG!!! I AM PLAYING IT NOW IN 8th GRADE!!!

  • /watch?v=4RhOSqDEUCU

  • Played this last year. Dear god...

  • Playing this for concert season this year. Can't wait :)

  • Played this as a. 8th grade Conner middle school! Loved

  • i have the snare part for this in my school band...

  • LOVE THIS SONG! Espesialy from Allego _____ _____! (I dont have the sheet music in front of me!) XD

  • I played first Clarinet on this as a Junior. It went terrible because we didn't have enough time to get it right. But I liked the song anyway.

  • played clarinet 3 for this last year in honor band, it was pretty good but we slowed down much much more in the middle, sounds better that way in my opinion

  • Played snare for this, love the part after the snare has that long long rest period.

  • i played this in 8th grade and 11th grade. i played trombone. great piece!

  • Wow, Hellfire918 is incredibly rude. No need to be jerk, man. Get some new vocabulary too.. it'll make you seem smarter :) thanks YSRrider!! Been looking for a good version of this for a while for a stroll down memory lane. Woo!

  • Last year we tried this song and the teacher decided to not play it. This year we have a new teacher an she wants to play this. This song is the reason why I love to play percussion.

  • I remember playing this in 8th grade :D

  • I remember it like just yesterday. I played the tympani. FINALLY we did not have to count and count and count and count for just a few measures of playing!

  • Why does every version of this I find starts with the same guy talking?!? Why can't I just find the fucking song?!?

  • @Hellfire918 what other videos have my guy talking? like what other videos?

  • @YSRrider Learn to read moron I said version not video! I'm not talking about the video I'm talking about the Fucking Recording! I search the fucking MP3 for the song & every single Fucking version has the same guy talking in the beginning.

  • Winter concert this is going down

  • Yep...played this on trumpet in high school band when I was a high school freshman in 2003. Apparently, so did everyone else.

  • How wonderful to hear this!! I was a high school senior in 1969 when this was new music and our band played it. We were amazed; had never heard and played such a dramatic and fun piece of music! I was the tympani player: what a thrill to be part of a percussion section for something like this!! Thanks for posting and sharing it here!!

  • @mia2kl I played snare on this piece and it was by far the best song I had ever played in Band!

  • @mia2kl im playing this for band this year i play alto sax its awesome

  • @mia2kl Haha, I'm playing Timpani on it now.

  • mannnnn i totally miss being in band. this song was my absolute favorite!!! i love the trumpets in this song and the oboe! I played the oboe so I just had to throw that in there.

  • My high school band is playing this for our marching season's opening song. Oh, lord. The counting sucks, if you mess up once, the whole song is ruined.

  • The mena mosso is the hardest, its the flute solo

  • *Random crash*

  • 僕のトロンボーン人生は、中学一年生この曲とともに始まった。26年経つがまだ完全に暗譜している。

  • Is the snare drum part hard? Because I heard my school band is going to play it for our concert. And i have yet to see the scores. It sounds hard to me. I THINK.

  • I play bass on this.. I LOVE THE GRAVE PART.

BTW Why is it not slowing down at the Moderato part?

  • I play bass on this.. I LOVE THE GRAVE PART.

  • I play bass on this... i'm in 7th grade. I LOVE THE GRAVE PART.

  • hard as fuck to play on trumpet

  • I played Bassoon on this song after just having about 2 weeks of picking up the instrument. It was really fun (:

  • Aw, this was my favorite song from high school band. I miss it!

  • We'r playing this for our spring concert this year, although it's gonna be at a slower pace. Hope we can do it awesome like this!

  • i <3 my 2 measure trombone solo :)

  • Oh how i love 85 measures of rests.(xylophone)

  • god help the concert band to perform this. lol oh tottenville. lol schub.. i feel so bad she tries so hard and the band doesnt give her any respect or listen... poor schub.... and its such a cool song too....

  • This song is an ode to startling the Trumpet Section with excessive and VERY loud percussion parts.

  • im preforming this saturday and im pumped!!!

  • for this song i am 1st 2nd and 3rd chair saxophone

  • we played this last year got superior for it I was 1st trombone 2nd chair

  • Tempo is very good!

This music is very difficult about tempo.

I have heard many performances but too slowly or too quickly....

    I like this performance!

  • playing the trumpet to this is amazing but i seem to be the only one in my band that can play it correctly

  • o hell yes. Played snare for this in the 8th grade

  • amazing song

  • Playing this for Symphonic band, although we sound like an elephant giving birth 'cause nobody bothers to practice at home. I play trumpet and this one of the more fun pieces I've played. Hope jazz band will be even better next year.

  • we are playing it this year.. i love it.

  • Mr. Nelhybel was CZECH by birth & American-US citizen by adoption. He lived to see both the brutal Soviet suppression of Czech Prague Spring & his homeland's casting off Soviet shackles. I had the good fortune when young (1960s) of being in an all mid-Tennessee high school band w/ Mr. Nelhybel as guest conductor. He loved American HS & College concert bands and conducted many work shops. I agree that some parts are too fast tempo, but the piece is nice nevertheless. Influence: Smetana not USSR

  • Does anyone know of a band recording that does not take the middle section as fast?

  • It's an alright trumpet part. Rather simple for the most part

All around, I think this song kinda sucks. It's just everywhere. I don't really like it.

It's not as organized as it should be. When I play it in the concert band I'm in, most of the time I feel something else when I play my part. Of course I play what's written and when it's written, but it never seems right.

But I guess that's the beauty of Nelhybel

  • FOR MOTHER RUSSIA! great song my bands playing it ^_^

  • Hardest bass drum part I've ever played. =P

  • @Neridah12 I loved it, I played Snare but I learned bass also.

  • @Neridah12 I'm currently learning the Timpani Part for this and It's a killer for sure.

  • @urkhalmaster I don't remember that part...but I wish you luck with it!

  • @Neridah12 It's been about three months since my comment, but I figured I'd let you know that it went well. I can't hear the timpani part in this video though.

  • Sounds like the soundtrack to an old propaganda film from the Soviet Union.

  • @Jwend392

That's so hilarious. I always kinda thought so too, when I was playing it in HS band...30 years ago or more.

  • What is the footage the man is talking about in the beginning?

  • You've already failed for calling it a "song"...so stop. Cool piece though :)

  • Can you send me the audio to this? Without the annoying "Most Important Thing of Mankind" part?

  • This was a good performance and a good sounding band. Unfortunately, the director never heard the piece performed by the composer and took the middle and ending sections way too fast. Other than that, thank you for sharing. What is the name of the band playing?

  • @drakeab this is just a version I found online. I am not sure of the band. sorry.

  • @drakeab i've played this piece a couple of times, and i actually enjoy it at a faster tempo.

this probably is pushing it a little much, but i enjoy it.

  • @TravisTriplet003 the part at 2:53 makes no sense at that speed. The euph part is supposed to sound like a slow march-type backbeat, but in this it's just kinda like "Hey I'mma play these quarter notes, k?"

  • @RobertCShepley well i said it was pushed a little much.

    here, it's obviously too much.

lets say this recording is taking that section at about 155 bpm.

    i prefer around 125-130.

recommended tempo is probably around 105-115.

don't hold me too closely to those tempos. it's been a while for me.

  • @drakeab

Boy, ditto ten times on the tempo after the opening section. I don't get it. Shame, because other than that it's played really well, as you say.

  • @drakeab

Let me amend that--tempo is too fast in second section, _not_ all the way to the end (a little quick in the rallentando toward the end, yeah).

  • Gte rid of the whole important video crap. I wana put this on my ipod and I'm sure others do. No one appriciates the annoying begging part. Just add your credit at the begging or whatever, but start the song immediantly. Great sound quality though!! I'm playing this song for a concert May 6th.
