I think it's "wacky" that Chris Matthews thinks that less guns = less crime. It's a fact proven by statistics - more guns = less crime. Less gun laws = less crime. Stricter gun laws = more crime. That's why most cities have high murder rates (people can't protect themselves). I live in a rural area with pretty lax gun laws. Robbery (for example) is risky business here. @fleawannabe22 My knowledge of murder rates in European countries is limited. However, I do know that when England banned handguns (actually most guns), murder rates increased. Stabbings occurred more often, and now Great Britan has very strict knife laws. They're also working on a "stab-proof knife". This is what happens when we let people run away with restrictive laws. Things get ridiculously out of control really fast, and it doesn't really have a positive impact on society.

I'm not a behaviorist, so I don't know how people think in other countries (or even my own). Maybe in your case, a more active role from the government is preferred. This is where the government gets the opportunity to control the atmosphere. If left unchecked, things can get out of control (i.e. North Korea = Prison).

When people in positions of power are asked about important decisions they made, they deflect accountability by saying things like "decisions were made..." instead of just taking responsibility for their actions. With this in mind, a free market system would be better than "big business in bed with big government" because there would be no accountability at all.

Law abidiing citizens are canididates for a CCW, not criminals. Those with CCW's go through an FBI background check, they get a clearance from the State Department of Justice, and they register the seriel numbers of the guns that they carry. If one has a criminal past, they don't get a CCW. There is no doubt in my mind that crime would go down if law abiding citizens all carried concealed weapons. This past year there have been a lot of gun related murders on the streets of Rochester. I think it's 34 murders so far this year. In every case the criminal (obviously) had a gun whereas the victim was unarmed. The greater percentage were drug related, but there was once case where a young woman walking back from band practice was shot and killed during a robbery. She was unarmed. So much for your theory there.

Third, the officer still has a lot of areas exposed to getting shot around the ballistics vest, such as the head and femoral arteries. Fourth, the radio is going to be just as useless as the officer's gun in a stick up. Do you think the thug is going to let the officer radio for help? He/she'd get shot in an instant.

I'm pretty sure criminals everywhere, not just in the US, procure their weapons by getting around legally applying for a permit. Canada, like any other country, has a black market of arms. Only the responsible law-abiders are going to apply for a Canada (or Quebec, however it's done) permit. Criminals will never take that route.

The Right to Keep and Bear Arms applies somewhat to allowing a citizen the right to defend him/herself from criminals, but the rest is giving people the right to defend themselves against a tyrannical government.
@ic069 Tasers are good out to 15 or 20 feet. A bullet from a standard semiautomatic handgun is good out to 300 yards (900 feet), but accurate to 25 yards (75 feet). A bullet from a 5.56 x 45mm is accurate out to 600 yards (2,400 feet). Please don't ask me to convert to meters, lol.

If we never had this discussion beforehand and we met, you would never even know I had it on me and I would never tell you. It has done so in 2 ways: 1. The criminals have become more stand offish knowing an entire community is armed, but not knowing who might be armed on the street, so they leave it alone, or #2. The daring criminals were shot and are currently either in prison, the hospital, or in the ground.
@ic069 Yes, some road ragers have raised guns. That's not me and that isn't the majority of responsible law-abiding gun owners. The majority of us understand the laws, when we can and can't use deadly physical force, and never horseplay with what we're carrying. We teach our children the responsibility of safe gun handling, educate those who are unsure about their gun rights. Some of us are hunters (not me), some like target shooting, clay pigeon shooting, and just having a good time with F&Fs.

I think it's "wacky" that Chris Matthews thinks that less guns = less crime. It's a fact proven by statistics - more guns = less crime. Less gun laws = less crime. Stricter gun laws = more crime. That's why most cities have high murder rates (people can't protect themselves). I live in a rural area with pretty lax gun laws. Robbery (for example) is risky business here. @fleawannabe22 My knowledge of murder rates in European countries is limited. However, I do know that when England banned handguns (actually most guns), murder rates increased. Stabbings occurred more often, and now Great Britan has very strict knife laws. They're also working on a "stab-proof knife". This is what happens when we let people run away with restrictive laws. Things get ridiculously out of control really fast, and it doesn't really have a positive impact on society.

I'm not a behaviorist, so I don't know how people think in other countries (or even my own). Maybe in your case, a more active role from the government is preferred. This is where the government gets the opportunity to control the atmosphere. If left unchecked, things can get out of control (i.e. North Korea = Prison).

When people in positions of power are asked about important decisions they made, they deflect accountability by saying things like "decisions were made..." instead of just taking responsibility for their actions. Law abidiing citizens are canididates for a CCW, not criminals. Those with CCW's go through an FBI background check, they get a clearance from the State Department of Justice, and they register the seriel numbers of the guns that they carry. If one has a criminal past, they don't get a CCW. There is no doubt in my mind that crime would go down if law abiding citizens all carried concealed weapons. Imagine how many home invasions there would be in this country if homeowners couldnt have a firearm

Guns in the hands of civilians are a "last resort" self defense tool for when he and his family are being attacked by thugs who themselves have deadly weapons. Have you seen videos of cashiers working in convenient stores held up by gang bangers and then the cashier pulls out a weapon from behind the counter and fires back? Sometimes the perpetrator is hit and sometimes nobody is hit on either side. But most importantly is that the cashier is still alive because of his actions.

@ic069 But that's enabling violent criminals to keep committing more violent crimes. Pacifism can get someone killed just as easily as aggressive resistance. At least the latter allows you a fighting chance for survival, unlike the former.
If a criminal points a gun and begins robbing me, he has instantly surrendered his "right to life". As you know most criminals are sloppy and often let their guard down at certain points. It is in those moments when my strike could and would occur.

If criminals are so brazen as to attack armed citizens with guns, why then don't they do the same to the police, who actually shows his/her sidearm? Why not rob a cop? It's because the thief sees the gun beforehand and knows "Oh shit, that could be used against me!" and so he wanders off to find easier unarmed prey, which there's plenty of. Why would a thief take chances against anyone armed. They're cowards by in large.

This past year there have been a lot of gun related murders on the streets of Rochester. I think it's 34 murders so far this year. In every case the criminal (obviously) had a gun whereas the victim was unarmed. The greater percentage were drug related, but there was once case where a young woman walking back from band practice was shot and killed during a robbery. She was unarmed. So much for your theory there.

Third, the officer still has a lot of areas exposed to getting shot around the ballistics vest, such as the head and femoral arteries. Fourth, the radio is going to be just as useless as the officer's gun in a stick up. Do you think the thug is going to let the officer radio for help? He/she'd get shot in an instant.
It would be best if the officer just complies and hands over his/her gun + radio + money.

I'm pretty sure criminals everywhere, not just in the US, procure their weapons by getting around legally applying for a permit. Canada, like any other country, has a black market of arms. Only the responsible law-abiders are going to apply for a Canada (or Quebec, however it's done) permit. Criminals will never take that route.

The 34 murders is over a population of 240,000 people in Rochester so far for the year 2010. The problem isn't so much guns as it is other elements combined with "illegal guns": lack of education, poverty, drug use/sales. I'm not even middle class. I'm below that and basically a poor person with many guns, but I don't go around killing people. Now why is that?

Ranchers and police are being shot, in public and in broad daylight insome instances. Do you think those citizens upon wandering away from their home into public should have the right to carry as a last stand to defend themselves? But if I did ever see someone OC here, I wouldn't think too much of it. There's no way it would freak me out. True story about 5 years ago I was in a Wendys ordering food. A man went to the straw/napkin area to get stuff. He didn't know his shirt was up over his gun. I calmly and politely told him about it and he quickly fixed the problem.

Knives must be kept concealed or in a carrying case about the waist. Blade length for folding knives not to exceed 4 1/2". People v. Kindred 18 A.D. 2nd 1086 held that a 15-18" knife was a "per se" weapon, possibly under a defunct statute.

@ic069 When you ask, "Is it legal to carry a big knife in the US?" you have to look at each state's individual laws. New York's laws are going to be different than Florida's laws, and Florida's laws are going to be different than California's laws, an so on.

@ic069 Tasers are good out to 15 or 20 feet. A bullet from a standard semiautomatic handgun is good out to 300 yards (900 feet), but accurate to 25 yards (75 feet). A bullet from a 5.56 x 45mm is accurate out to 600 yards (2,400 feet). Please don't ask me to convert to meters, lol.
Tasers, like pepper spray, are being used, but these devices have limited applications. I would not take a taser into a gun battle anymore than I would take a stick of pepperoni into a sword fight.

I honestly don't understand why handguns get such a bad rap by the rest of the world. If we never had this discussion beforehand and we met, you would never even know I had it on me and I would never tell you. It would always stay in its holster, I would not even take it out if someone punched me in the face. A gun is a last resort tool. I have other options, like leave, call the police, and give a description of my assailant.

Statistics have consistently demonstrated that gun control laws have increased the amount of violent crime in the US, while the increasein gun ownership has brought a decline to violent crime. It has done so in 2 ways: 1. The criminals have become more stand offish knowing an entire community is armed, but not knowing who might be armed on the street, so they leave it alone, or #2. The daring criminals were shot and are currently either in prison, the hospital, or in the ground.

The majority of us understand the laws, when we can and can't use deadly physical force, and never horseplay with what we're carrying. We teach our children the responsibility of safe gun handling, educate those who are unsure about their gun rights. Some of us are hunters (not me), some like target shooting, clay pigeon shooting, and just having a good time with F&Fs.
