umpires to get it wrong a bit but that was the most obvious punch the the worlds because palms cant deflect a ball like that hahah, but once the umpire made the call u have to stick with it. my mate umpires and says he sometimes makes calls and realises after he has blown the whistle it was a wrong call but not much u can do about it, u dont understand the pressure that these guys are under in front of thousand of people, i think they do pretty alright, no umpires, no afl

it's common sense:

1. the ball bobbled up so high that it obviously wasn't a juggled mark but a spoil

2. hodge immediately played on once he caught it, suggesting he knew it wasn't a mark

the umpire clearly "guessed" that it was a mark. if there is any reasonable doubt then the correct decision is play on.

That's why we need Video replay reviews like the NFL and like Hawkeye with Tennis. Each team would be able to make a certain amount of "challenges" so it shouldn't impact on the time issue. Like in this example, a player is not rewarded for punching the ball as a defender, which is what they are supposed to do. It's unfair when the ump gets it wrong. Give those players a chance to challenge.

Hodgey played on cause he knew it was touched, he stopped because the umpire blew the whistles. Port supporters wouldn't have complaining if it was the other way round.

That's exactly why the system has to be fixed.

You don't just look at a problem and say 'move on', you create a solution, and you can only force them to create a solution when you complain about the problem.

Firstly, I'm not sure that only complaining about something is going to create a solution.

Secondly, I wouldn't be dismissive of the problem if there was an obvious solution, however there is not. What do you suggest? An umpire dedicated to judging marks? A video umpire in the box that the captain can appeal to, to review an umpiring decision and overall? I don't believe there is a solution to remedy human errors. Thus, I suggest that we all accept that mistakes will be made.

If you watch the footy on a weekly basis you would realize mistakes are made more often then this.

And yes, you are correct, a video referee or an extra umpire would in fact help a lot with these errors.

@xreenberg They do happen, but usually it's when both players originally touch the ball. In this case Hodge didn't even touch it, and Logan got all fist on that, even Hodge tried to run off, this is easily one of the worst I can remember seeing.

Instead the decision is holding the ball "You dragged it under" "you dived on it" [Incorrect terminology I know but they say it] "you held it in" etc, they fix this up and I'd be much happier.

We could see it easily from channel 7's crappy SD coverage so imagine how obvious it would have been for the umpire 15 metres away from it? Either something fishy was going on or the umpire was not even watching the contest.
