but the umpire says they are right all the time otherwise they dont pay kicks or marks or freekicks. just another reason why the afl and umpires are totally corrupt and cheat
umpires to get it wrong a bit but that was the most obvious punch the the worlds because palms cant deflect a ball like that hahah, but once the umpire made the call u have to stick with it. my mate umpires and says he sometimes makes calls and realises after he has blown the whistle it was a wrong call but not much u can do about it, u dont understand the pressure that these guys are under in front of thousand of people, i think they do pretty alright, no umpires, no afl
Not surprising it was the same umpire who gave Franklin a 50m penalty in the qualifying final when Lonergan ran in to smother his kick AFTER he had called play on.
you could understand the umpire missing that.. from his angle it would look like was juggled by the hawthorn player.. because the punch was in between the Hawthorn players hands.
No use sulking over it... what did you want the umpire to do? guess?
That's why we need Video replay reviews like the NFL and like Hawkeye with Tennis. Each team would be able to make a certain amount of "challenges" so it shouldn't impact on the time issue. Like in this example, a player is not rewarded for punching the ball as a defender, which is what they are supposed to do. It's unfair when the ump gets it wrong. Give those players a chance to challenge.
Hodgey played on cause he knew it was touched, he stopped because the umpire blew the whistles. Port supporters wouldn't have complaining if it was the other way round.
@MrDZDJ actually i wouldn't complain if the umpire was correct if it was the other way round yes it would be nice to have the free kick but its not fair to the other team if it was clearly touched
You don't just look at a problem and say 'move on', you create a solution, and you can only force them to create a solution when you complain about the problem.
Firstly, I'm not sure that only complaining about something is going to create a solution.
Secondly, I wouldn't be dismissive of the problem if there was an obvious solution, however there is not. What do you suggest? An umpire dedicated to judging marks? A video umpire in the box that the captain can appeal to, to review an umpiring decision and overall? I don't believe there is a solution to remedy human errors. Thus, I suggest that we all accept that mistakes will be made.
What about two goal umpires and more boundary umpires?
Many AFL players have suggested this, does this seem more viable to you considering you disagree with video umpiring with no backup argument as to why?
@xreenberg They do happen, but usually it's when both players originally touch the ball. In this case Hodge didn't even touch it, and Logan got all fist on that, even Hodge tried to run off, this is easily one of the worst I can remember seeing.
@xreenberg Actually no, I'd like them to review the bull shit rules that is holding the ball these days. All through juniors I was taught go get the footy and you'll be rewarded with a free kick. Instead the decision is holding the ball "You dragged it under" "you dived on it" [Incorrect terminology I know but they say it] "you held it in" etc, they fix this up and I'd be much happier.
@xreenberg Not that fucking obvious though! Happens sometimes but when the umpires not blind sighted like he wasn't there, there are NO EXCUSES what so ever.
@xreenberg Everyone who goes for Port would agree, and also a lot of others would also agree that they don't happen all the time! I mean that was dead set obvious and you know it. We could see it easily from channel 7's crappy SD coverage so imagine how obvious it would have been for the umpire 15 metres away from it? Either something fishy was going on or the umpire was not even watching the contest.
@xreenberg no they don't, this was insanely obvious. hodge had his hands open for a mark and logan had one fist in the air, a footy doesn't bounce that high off your palms.
Terrible decision.

Even Hodge didn't think he'd marked it, went to play on immediately.

frankmat 5 months ago
@frankmat you must be a hawthorn supporter if you're defending that decision.
it's common sense:
1. the ball bobbled up so high that it obviously wasn't a juggled mark but a spoil
2. hodge immediately played on once he caught it, suggesting he knew it wasn't a mark
the umpire clearly "guessed" that it was a mark. if there is any reasonable doubt then the correct decision is play on.

@xreenberg
If you watch the footy on a weekly basis you would realize mistakes are made more often then this.
And yes, you are correct, a video referee or an extra umpire would in fact help a lot with these errors.
chessonmyshirt 6 months ago
@chessonmyshirt
My original comment says exactly what you're saying, these things happen all the time. And a video umpire, is a ridiculous idea.

But yeh, let's not seek a way to improve on our sport.
