What Jandek's contribution lacks in formal musicianship he makes up for in 'balance'. It's the right sort of wrong at the right time. Of course, with a less able rhythm section it might well have been a total mess, although I note that Jandek manages to end on a totally appropriate 'chord' which implies that he may well know much more than he's letting on - and after 30 plus albums he must have learned something!
@palmerstonian - I always find it funny when people say Jandek 'can't play'. First of all, by virtue of the fact that he produces noises, he obviously is physically capable; also, I hear repeated riffs in his pieces, and I can whistle along with many of his tracks (not so much READY FOR THE HOUSE, but later stuff).
My friend, who is a fan of Jandek, told me to watch this and comment before anyone states, "if you do not like it don't watch it".
I am totally fine with abstract music and art, in general. Basically I see this music as a waste of time. It is a guy talking over an atonal guitar tuning and some decent slap bass. So long as he is having fun with it and can make a living doing what he does, the more power to him.
This is out of this world...but some how it makes sense that this is what he would do for his first ever home town show. The fact that Jandek actually seems into it, makes him all the more weird....no one is more fascinating.
truly a man that lives and breathes music, always looking for something fresh. also, very nice to see him get applauded, i mean, for someone who's been doing this for so long without an actual audience, it must mean a lot to him, the recognition. he looks so thrilled!
truly this man lives and breathes music. always looking for something new. funk, guitar noise (which jandek basically invented) and his unique vocals. hell of a mix.
@Abraxas80 - nothing he's ever performed live has been on a studio record. I do sometimes wish he'd make a non-solo record again (some of his earlier stuff has a 'band').
i like this because it's potentially offensive....i mean, most people probably went their expecting to hear some loose noisy music and they got a slap bass player and all........lol........and jandek is being himself which i suppose you love or hate.
A month later in his hometown, Houston, Jandek with four guests did a chamber music piece; a soundtrack-like theme for a suspense thriller in one, two or three movements for about an hour+. It was hard to tell whether there were any real breaks in the music. Jandek was seated playing electric bass with an alto sax(?) pleyer, a seated electric guitarist and synthesizer(?), a percussionist on a gong set and a second percussionist on a chime set. Another great Jandek set that most of Houston miss
I am a huge fan of Jandek and have been for a number of years now. I've even had the pleasure of seeing the Rep live a few times. But this performance is just plain fucking awesome! I wish I could have been there.

If anyone other than Jandek played exactly the same thing, this would be immediately identified as by the book garbage; this is terrible. Is it supposed to be somehow ironic?
the bass player & drummer are the only people onstage who know what they're doing, and trust me, the bass player is totally embarrassed to be there, as he SHOULD be.
dude it was awesome. that guy was smiling the entire time. it was one of the coolest shows i have ever seen, ever. the rep was connected with the audience and was clearly enjoying himself.
This version of the band actually reminds me of Minutemen a little bit.

How the hell did Jandek and this slappy bassist find each other? And how long has he had this burning hunk of funk within him?

@shuckslbj I would really like to know the answers to both of your great questions here!

Wished he'd have remained obscure and hidden because that mystique was compelling, but can't fault him for wanting to emerge.

For a second, I thought Jandek might actually be able to play the guitar.
And then around 1:35 I realized that he wasn't actually playing anything up until then.

For everybody's information, this was the encore. Yes, believe it or not, an encore at a Jandek show.
It was an amazing thing to behold. Extremely high energy and the Corwood Rep. was obviously having a blast. He moved around a lot and smiled a lot.
I can't wait for the cd release of this. It was truly a milestone in Corwoodian history. I'll never forget it.
