  • Thanks Betty, that looks delicious!

  • Thank you Betty for this presentation! I will be carving my turkey for Christmas just like this ;-) Happy holidays to you and your!

  • Do you cook it with the lid on the whole time ma'am, or place the lid on for the last hour or so?

  • @simbaerod I leave the lid on the whole time. If it is not browning nicely, then toward the end of cooking I remove the lid and let it brown under the broiler.

    --Betty :)

  • I forgot to mention I didn't guess that it was suppose to be cold water, it said so in this packet It came with. Hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving

  • @Heyzitzaperson Using cold water is correct. Changing it is a good idea, and there is no reason that changing the water would introduce salmonella. I think your turkey will come out perfectly! I wish you are wonderful Thanksgiving, too!

    --Betty :)

  • I defrosted part of my turkey in cold water just so it was cold I changed the water every 45 min or so would that also be introducing salmonella poisoning ??

  • @Heyzitzaperson Your method of defrosting the turkey sounds fine. When it is defrosted, you just need to go ahead and season and butter it, place it in a roasting pan, cover, and let it cook. Then *thoroughly* clean your sink, countertop, and any containers that have held the turkey, using soapy water with a little bleach added.

    --Betty :)

  • Got my turkey all set to go for tomorrow. But, I was wondering. Since you used a 12 lb turkey. If I had a 10lb turkey, would I be correct in assuming that I should roast it for about 3 1/2 hours at 325 degrees? Rather then 4 hours?

I don't have a meat thermometer on hand, so I probably won't be able to check the temp. Might rely on the pop-up thermometer that comes with it.

  • @Tekken4Life3 Yes, it will probably take only about 3 1/2 hours. The pop-up thermometers are generally reliable, too.

    --Betty :)

  • Is Kosher salt better than regular salt? And how much salt?? My turkey last year was too salty :(

  • @curlsrocck To avoid oversalting your turkey, I would suggest regular salt, since kosher salt is thicker and harder to manage. Just lightly salt all of the outside and the inner cavity, and the turkey should be fine.

    --Betty :)

  • hi betty, thanks for the info on turkey. i'll check out the crock pot turkey show as well, thanks, eric.

  • Hi Betty, I was wondering when you would put the stuffing in If you were to use it

  • @Clo13579 I would put it in right after cleaning and salting the turkey--and then put it into the oven.

    --Betty :)

  • How long would I have to cook it if I used a turkey breast?

  • @blissfuljustine For a turkey breast, follow the package instructions, if you have a package. Otherwise, cook it slowly for about 3 to 4 hours (depending on the size of breast).

    --Betty :)

  • Betty you are so helpful. It's such a plesure to watch you cook and create wonders! thank you for your videos...

  • i dont have the pot like yours that i can cover.. What else can i do i dont have any cover please help thanksgivving is around the corner

  • @selenaroks You can always cover any pan with aluminum foil, which will work as well as a lid.

    --Betty :)

  • Your video was very helpful

  • love it it so easy!!! im doin it for this thanksgiving thanks for sharing :)

  • 180 degrees is way too long. usda recommends only 165... so pulling it out around 155 degrees should be sufficient (should gain +10-15 degrees from carryover heat)... just my two cents

  • Is it safe to just put the turkey on your counter instead of a plate or cutting board? :3

  • @xKaoKaox It's fine to put the turkey on the counter. Just remember to clean up with water with clorox after removing the turkey.

    --Betty :)

  • Why would you need to wash the turkey with water? Wouldn't putting it in the oven kill any bacteria?

  • @MrCapisce Most people rinse the turkey with water, so that handling it will be cleaner and also excess bacteria and other undesired material will be washed away. The heat of the oven will kill the bacteria, but it is not pleasant to think that there might be foreign materials on the cooked turkey. Some factories are not the cleanest.

    --Betty :)

  • @REEL2REELNEWS I'm sure organic foods of all types are better. Thanks for the reminder!

    --Betty :)

  • people who hit "dislike" should be shamed!

  • @sheersoxNC There will always be people that "dislike." I have learned to let it run off my shoulders.

    --Betty :)

  • why do you salt the turkey?

  • @nancydrew5 Salt is what gives turkey a nice flavor, and it also flavors the juices that you can use for gravy.

    --Betty :)

  • The first actual feast of Thanksgiving in what was to become the United States occurred on April 20, 1598 in the area of present day El Paso, Texas. The feast was led by the Basque Juan de Oñate during his expedition north from San Gerónimo,to colonize New Mexico.

    Someone cheated....

  • Hey Betty!

It's been a while since I commented, and I must say -- my lord. I used this recipe for my Thanksgiving Dinner a while back [2010], and it turned out phenomenal! It was perrrfect - so tender, juicy, and enjoyable! My whole family loved it... thanks again! CHEERS!

  • @princessonema1712 Thanks for your great feedback! I really appreciate it!

    --Betty :)

  • Hi Betty, thank you again for this video. I come back to it time and time again when I need a refresher on how to prepare turkey, such as Xmastime. Merry Xmas to you and your family - I learn so much from all of your videos. xoxo Amy

I wish you and yours a very merry Christmas!

    --Betty :)

My ?'s...turkey is 10.9 how long do I cook it & at what temp? thx

  • Thank you so very much, Betty- I haven't roasted a turkey in a few years so this is a great video on how to do it properly. Looks great- thank you very much for sharing !!!

  • Yumm! I am ready for Thanksgiving now!

  • Does it have to have a lid? The baking dish that is...

  • Thanksgiving and all of its accompanying traditions began as a pagan feast, honoring Pagan agricultural gods, which dates back thousands of years. A goose used to be the main course for the Pagan harvest festivals .These birds representing the sun god and was replaced by the more common turkey in America.

The Pilgrims observed a Three Day thanksgiving in the fall of 1621,this was the same way , Pagan Rome celebrated there Pagan goddess Ceres in Rome and Athens

  • betty, how do u feel about those turkey oven bags?

  • @IanzGurrl I have used them before, and they work fine. It's just a matter of preference.

    --Betty :)

  • wow amazing you are one of the greatest sweetheart.

  • Perfect! Looks delicious. i always look forward to my moms stuffing

  • how much butter and salt did you use, precisely?

  • @princessonema1712 I just do it to taste. The butter should show a little bit, and then just sprinkle salt, as if you were salting eggs. It's veyr variable.

    --Betty :)

  • hey there! i just wanted to let you know that I am following your whole Thanksgiving dish and recipes. The roast turkey, the brown buttered mash potatoes and the gravy made with the turkey juice stock. This is my first Thanksgiving meal I'm doing. Hopefully it will be successful! Hope you enjoy your Thanksgiving weekend. Happy Thanksgiving. Enjoy it with your family! Also where can I get your book in Canada. Thanks.

  • @jubbiee Thanks for your lovely comment! I hope your Thanksgiving goes well! If you want to get my cookbook, just go to lulu.com and put in the search word: bettyskitchen. They ship to Canada, also. Thanks for your interest!

    --Betty :)

  • Indeed,The turkey is packaged like this.

It is an ingredient not obtained easily in Japan.

It is a video of a very polite recipe. If the size of the medium of the turkey can be obtained, I want also to learn this and to try.Grilling up seems to be also very delicious.

Here was taught to my friend.

    Thank you GreenEyesSmiley-San.

  • @akimotoshow Thanks for your lovely comment.

    --Betty :)

  • so do you put anything in the pan or do you leave the pan dry ???? cuz this will be my frist turkey

  • @onelife2726 I just put the turkey in the pan. I first rub it well with butter (or you may use oil), but I do not add water or stock or anything like that.

    --Betty :)

  • @missy07yashy hello i just want to ask where did you get the red thing that pops out freom the turykey and what it is called?? and where can i find thermometer here in the states im sorry i am new here in united states...hope you response

  • do you not wash the turkey?

  • @missy07yashy Yes, I always wash the turkey. I may have not shown that part in the video; I usually mention it in the write-up.

    --Betty :)

  • @missy07yashy hello i just want to ask where did you get the red thing that pops out freom the turykey and what it is called?? and where can i find thermometer here in the states im sorry i am new here in united states...hope you response

  • @phangdon34 The red thing that pops out of the turkey is a built-in meat thermometer, and it comes with the turkey. Not all turkeys come with them, and not all of them are very accurate. You can find a meat thermometer at a store like Walmart.

    --Betty :)

  • sweet thank for your tip but never try cook turkey before, so I am doing next years 2010. XD

    gotta save this favorite.

  • I hope you enjoy the turkey recipe!

    --Betty :)

  • wow what nice teeth whats her secret!?!? lol

  • No secret. I grew up on a dairy farm, and therefore had milk to drink for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I brush and floss a lot. Every 6 months or so, I do about a week of going to bed with carbamide peroxide (20% ) on my teeth to keep them white. (You can buy the carbamide peroxide on eBay.)

    --Betty :)

  • RING OF POWER on utube!

  • Great!

    --Betty :)

    --Betty :)

  • Thank you so much for the recipe. I am sure you made Thanksgiving a success for many families like myself. I didn't know cooking turkey was so easy. Everything came out great! ( It was my first time cooking turkey) Thanks again Betty!

  • I hope your turkey turns out great! Happy Thanksgiving to you!

    --Betty :)

  • which is better with or without the oven bag?thank you.

  • You can do it either way, and it will be fine. I prefer not to use a bag. Thanks for your question!

    --Betty :)

  • Happy Thanksgiving Betty God Bless you & your family :) !!!

  • Happy Thanksgiving to you! Have a wonderful day!

    --Betty :)

  • you are such a yummy

    happy thanksgiving to you too

  • You are sweet!

    --Betty :)

  • love your videos, how long would you cook an 18 lb turkey and at what temperature?

  • A 16 to 20 pound turkey will take 5 to 5 1/2 hours at 325 degrees, so I'm guessing it will be about 5 hours and 15 minutes, give or take.

    --Betty :)

  • Betty -- question for ya! I don't have a nice roasting pan like yours and so I will be making my turkey in an aluminum pan. Do you keep your turkey covered with the lid the whole time? As a substitute, could I just cover the turkey with foil and cut a few slits in it? I guess I'm wondering how the turkey browns if there's a lid on it the entire time. Yours did brown nicely, however. Thanks for the help!

  • Yours will be fine, covered with foil. Just remove the foil 1/2 hour before you think the turkey will be done, and it will brown nicely. I took the lid off for the last half-hour. Good luck with your turkey!

    --Betty :)

  • Excellent -- one more question (sorry) -- should I cut a few slits in the foil so air can escape? Does your roasting pan have a hole in the top? Thanks again Betty, you're the best!

  • I noticed you said that you were going to put slits in the top. That's okay, but I wouldn't do that; I would want to keep all the steam and moisture inside until I am ready to remove the foil. My roasting pan has circle in the top with a sliding metal ring. I keep it closed. I hope this helps!

    --Betty :)

  • Hi Betty! I just found you through Tammy aka yoyomax...i just love your videos..im always interested in finding new recipes and being able to try and recreate them! you do such a wonderful job! :)

  • Thanks for your lovely comment! I hope you enjoy my recipes!

    --Betty :)

  • Hello Ms Betty im josh Kandy's husbund i see my wife has been trying alot of your dishes thank u so much for teaching her how to cook dont tell her this but last night was the first meal she made that i liked all the others she made that were her personal recipes were just gross so thanks again for teaching my wife how to cook properly-Josh

  • Hi Josh!

Thanks for your sweet comment! Kandy has been a delight to work with!

    --Betty :)

  • I didn't see you wash the Turkey....but it looks good :)

  • Washing the turkey took me awhile, and it was pretty messy, so I did not include that in the video. After washing the turkey, I moved it back up on the counter and placed my roasting pan in the sink. You might have noted that the turkey oozed a lot of water onto the counter. It would have been better if I had patted all of that dry with a paper towel! After I had the turkey in the oven, I washed the counter with soapy water, and then washed it with pure clorox, then soapy water again.

    -Betty

  • ohh i see :)

  • Happy Thanksgiving to you and your Family Betty. Thank you for your videos.

  • You are more than welcome for the videos! Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!

    --Betty :)

  • Good method, Betty! Thanks for the video:) I have done turkey breast before, but not a whole turkey. One thing I don't have is a baster, and I should get one! Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!

  • Thanks for your nice comment! The baster isn't essential--but nice to have. I wish you and your family a Happy Thanksgiving!

    --Betty :)

  • betty, what about how to brine a turkey

  • I never "brine" a turkey. I just butter and salt it, right before it goes into the roasting pan to bake. it comes out delicious!

    --Betty :)

  • o betty your recipes saved my life tonight at dinner i made your mexican cheese spread as a starter tater tot cassarole for main dish and your pumpkin pie for dessert my in laws loved it even my picky husbund who eats nothing but pizza loved it thank u so much-Kandy Bri

  • Hi Kandy!

Your meal choices were great, and I am so happy that your in-laws and husband enjoyed them! Thanks for your wonderful feedback!

    --Betty :)

  • My roasting pan has a rack in it, do I use it for the turkey? thanks!

  • That is your choice. Mine did not have a rack, so I put the turkey right on the bottom of the pan. The turkey will produce its own juice, and cooking the turkey in the juicy makes the turkey juicier. You don't need to worry about it burning, because of the juice. You can do it either way and the results should be great!

    --betty :)

  • thank you Betty! I'm grateful you took the time to respond to my question. I hope you and your family have a nice Thanksgiving!

  • Thanks Betty!

    great vid very detailed

    thanks !

  • You're welcome! I'm glad you liked the video!

    --Betty :)

  • hi betty irs me kandy i just wanted to ask one thing you have alot of fantastic recipes but which ones would you recomend to serve to your inlaws like i just got married two weeks agoand i wanna cook for my inlaws and impress them today so wut do u recomend outta your recipes to serve???-xoxo Kandy Bri

  • Hi Kandy,

An impressive and easy meal would be:

Chicken Parmesan Casserole with Wild Rice, a tossed green salad with dressing of your choice, Italian or French bread, diagonally sliced and served with olive oil for dipping and Quick and Easy Cherry Crunch for dessert. All of these things can be put together beforehand, with very little to do at the last minute. You can bring everything together and it will look and taste fantastic! Let me know if you have questions.

    Good luck!

    --Betty :)

  • It has been so long since I have cooked an entire bird that I have sort of forgotten how, lol!. This vid is a great refresher course. Thank you!

A Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family :D

  • You're welcome! I wish the Happiest of Thanksgivings to you and yours!

    --Betty :)

  • great video! i have a 21 pound turkey - how many hours to you suggest i cook it for - unstuffed. thank you

  • Thanks for your nice comment! Regarding the cooking tims, at 325 degrees, it should be about 4 1/2 to 5 hours. A meat thermometer should read 180 to 185 degrees.

    --Betty :)

  • Comment removed

  • I can tell you work out. Thanks for sharing this video. I'll be cooking my first this year.

  • Good luck with your first turkey! It should come out great. I hope you can use some of the ideas from my videos. Thanks for your sweet comment!

    --Betty :)

  • Betty, again you have a wonderful video. Thanks for sharing!

  • Thanks for your lovely comment! I'm happy to share my version of roasting turkey with you!

    --Betty :)

  • hey i had a question. do i have to use butter for the turkey? can i just use oil? Because im allergic to butter.

  • Oil is fine! You actually don't have to coat it with anything, but some oil just makes it browner and nicer! Thanks for your question!

    --Betty :)

  • this video rocks!! i love the way she baked the turkey. mouth watering good. i cant wait till turkey day. and the next day i get to spend thanksgiving with my family. and the next day with my ex-inlaws.

    --Betty :)

  • Hi betty why I came on the web to see if you had a video on cooking turkey SURPRISE Betty had a video .(LOL) I love you... Man oh man now I know my turkey will be better than last years. Betty last year mine was dry I thought I followed directions but I was wrong my gravy saved the day .Thanks for saving my thanks giving dinner 2009...

  • Thanks for your lovely comment! Your turkey will be perfect, if you just use butter and salt to taste, put it in the oven, and check it as it starts to get done. Leave a lid (or aluminum foil) on until the last half hour or so. Your tukey will be tender and juicy, but brown on the top! Thanks for your comment!

    --Betty :)

  • Thanks Betty! You just made Thanksgiving look a whole lot easier!!

  • It will be easy for you!--the turkey pretty much cooks itself, if you give it a little help getting started! Thanks for your sweet comment!

    --Betty :)

  • Very delicious looking..again, loving your presentations...I think I have cooked about 37 or 38 turkeys in my married lifetime, but the way you showed me made it so easy...Betty, thank you so much for your time and knowledge. You inspire me to perfect my cooking and baking skills even further..I loved how you carved it all and placed it back in the plate...love from rhode island...

  • Hi Louise!

Thanks again for another lovely comment! You always lift my spirits! There were a few "thumbs downs" to nice comments on this page this morning, and that was making me feel discouraged. But my true viewers, have made them all into "thumbs ups", and I am so grateful to have all of the loyal viewers like you! Thanks so much for your support!

    --Betty :)

  • If you will go to my profile page (bettyskitchen), you will find that I have constructed a Playlist called Holiday Dinner Menu Suggestions. it has about 60 different options. Just choose the ones you like and put together a terrific dinner! I also have a Party Foods Playlist!

    --Betty :)

  • Thanks for the tip about not to thaw at room but thaw in fridge days ahead of time. I usually get my turkey the day before( which is why I thaw at room temp). I really didn't think of that way too much. I guess because I was trying to save room in fridge. Also, you mentioned an upload about a crock pot turkey. What is the heading so I can find it. Thanks Mrs. Betty

  • Thanks for your nice comment. The crock pot turkey is named Betty's Crock Pot Roast Turkey Breast and Turkey Gravy Recipe. You will enjoy it if you need a smaller turkey than the one in this recipe! Thanks for asking!

    --Betty :)

  • Betty you're simply the best! I just want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing your recipes. I'm not a great cook and you are teaching me very well. Your recipe are easy to follow and i watch your utube channel everyday. I even told my sister about your site, and now my sister watch and learn from you. My sister said Thank God for Betty.

  • Thank you for the lovely compliment and for passing my channel along to your sister! I am so glad that you can use some of my recipes!

    --Betty :)

  • Nice video. I have access to fresh turkeys just outside of my front door. They are still alive and roam the golf course and surrounding area where I live =)

Is turkey a must for thanksgiving? I am thinking about doing rotisserie chicken.

  • Turkey is not a "must" for Thanksgiving at all! It's just the most traditional entree for a Thanksgiving table. If your family likes something else better, just make it festive and have a nice salmon, a beef roast, pork roast, lasagna, or whatever you like! The main thing is taking time to enjoy your family and friends...

    --Betty :)

  • Hello Bettye !! such a wonderful video.. how do you store a trukey that you have cooked so soon before thanksgiving ..

    -Kim

  • Hi Kim!

Oh, we ate that turkey for dinner, along with the cranberry relish, sweet potatoes and some mashed potatoes and gravy! I froze the leftovers in freezer bags--some nice pieces for sandwiches, and mixed pieces for casseroles, etc. We will be going to my brother's house to celebrate Thanksgiving Day, and there will be lots of fresh turkey there! Thanks for your question!

    --Betty :)

  • Hi Betty

Thanks for showing us all the video. Your turkey looked really tasty I am sure that your family really enjoyed it. I use the left over carcase to make a stock for use to make a nice vegetable soup.

  • Yes, my family enjoyed it! That's a great idea to use the leftover carcass to make stock for vegetable soup! I try not to waste anything! Thanks for your lovely comment!

    --Betty :)

  • Hey Betty,

You are such a lovely Southern Belle in the best of tradition. I so enjoy your videos.

  • That is so sweet of you! Thanks for commenting--I was feeling a little discouraged after several "thumbs downs" to nice on comments on this page this morning! Thank you for lifting my spirits!

    --Betty :)

  • Well, I guess you can't fix stupid. How can you give a thumbs down to roast turkey?

  • And i forgot to mention I am really looking forward to the carving and gravy videos!

  • They will be uploaded tomorrow (assuming YouTube is working properly)!

    --Betty :)

  • I am having Thanksgiving at my house for the first time ever this year, so your video was very helpful to me as this is all new!

I have a question... my turkey roasting pan does not have a cover. Should I just cover it with aluminum foil? Can I just make a tent with the foil or do I have to completely seal the roasting pan all around with the foil?

    Thank you!!

  • It's fine to roast your turkey in a pan without a cover. Just use aluminum foil and entirely cover the top. Yes, I would seal the roasting pan all the way around with the foil, and then (very important), remove the foil about 1/2 hour before you expect your turkey to be done so that it can brown on the top. You can predict very closely how long your turkey should cook by reading the instructions on the label. It will give the temperature of the oven and the time for the number of pounds.
