  • Aretha was never an ordinary vocalist.....! just more well known for the gospel inspired soul and r & b numbers. I love her happy free flowing vocals, so unrestrained and vital.

I cant believe they said this music was bleached

  • Thank god for these artists what would we do now if they didnt come, a lot of joy they bring to a lot of people everyday, through our every day lives and in return they asked for nothing but to be heard

  • chills and... chills...

  • oh my...

  • I've always felt Aretha's work at Columbia was excellent. I believe the problem was the genre itself. Jazz don't make much money. There are exceptions to the rule but Aretha knew there was more out there for her. When she landed at Atlantic Records Ahmet Ertegun and Jerry Wexler knew it to. The rest is music history.

  • Aretha...you have earned that title 'Queen of Soul' a million times over. You sing every song to perfection and never fail to move. Thank-you

    you've got me all mistyfied.<3

  • great song and what a beautiful picture of aretha.

  • Listen to the musicality! The soul the range! Melodic lines and blend of musical sensibilities, pop, jazz, blues, gospel. Its about the soulful phrasing to drain every lyric of passion and purpose. Dont forget the purity of the instrument 3 octaves in one breath. Aretha is alone! No one can do it the way she does!

  • Aretha is one of the XX century's legendary singers, like Maria Callas or Billie Holiday, voices so unique that until today nobody could outshine them.

Just wonder if this century will produce singers with such amazing talent!?

  • Aretha is the greatest all rounder singer ever. She left a deep mark in almost any genre, from gospel.blues, jazz, soul to pop rock.Unfortunately in Columbia didn't know what to do with this glorious vocalist.Unbelivable !

  • I like this!!!!!!!

  • i personally think this style doesn't suit Aretha very well at all. she absolutely reigns over soul, but not this jazz standard.

  • soul or what!!!!

  • First time I hard this. It is awesome. It makes me want to dig up ALL her music!

  • A great singer can sing anything. If she had not gone to Atlantic and dominated emerging soul styles, she could have been the top jazz oriented singer of her day.

  • This is wonderful!

  • I LOVE THIS VERSION!!

  • A 24 year-old soul sister who became "Queen of Soul!" Destiny!

  • I just looovvve this song!!! What a great rendition of it!!!

  • you know... I really like her Columbia years. why does everyone say these were her least creative years? She recorded some excellent standards!

  • I think because Columbia forced Aretha to sing like previous famous singers who had rigid singing pattern. She fully shined when she moved to Atlanta. You can't tame the wild house and Aretha is the queen of them all. ;-)

Nonetheless, her records at Columbia are the gold mine. Very formal and control singing style.

  • Aretha's great, but I think it's a little unfair to say the older jazz girls were "rigid". Peggy Lee, for example, is a rhythmic genius. Aretha is equally incredible in her own way, but both schools could learn from eachother. It wouldn't have killed, say, Julie London to let loose once in awhile, and lack-of-restraint didn't always do Aretha good. She WRECKED the melody of "Ain't nothing like the real thing" with too much improvisation. Still, Re's great singing (and playing) in any style.

  • Aretha did not wreck Ain't Nothing Like The Real, it is different not bad, plus Aretha did a live version that is better than the recorded.

  • I don't know that I've heard anyone say they were her least creative years. But nobody knew who she was until she switched to Atlantic and she was promoted correctly. Same thing with Bonnie Raitt. When she was on Warner Bros. nobody knew who she was. She switched to a label that knew how to promote her and she was a hit.

  • @JamaQu It will be reassessed eventually. Critical opinion changes over time.

  • Outstanding!!!!!
