I can definitely hear why the untrained ear would think this is Australian - there's some similarities.

In fairness, as a Brit I only know very few American accents, that's New York, generic Deep South, and one that sort of covers everywhere else. Then there's Canadian which I assume to be American until one of them says the word 'about'.

And just for the record, you're used to your accent, and so if you're English, you will hear a lot more of a difference. American accents are a whole lot different, & English and Aussie accents sound a lot alike to us. We can still tell the difference, but it's tougher than telling apart English and, say, Russian... That's pretty obvious.

Yes they ARE a whole lot different to ME! I'm used to my own accent, and compared to mine, your sounds much different. and there is not AS MUCH difference between English and Aussie than there is between American and English.

It's also harder to tell for us because we hear more English accents in our media than Aussie...

@soso104 Australia was populated at a similar time to America, in the 18th century. Most Australian and English accents are very different. A few bits of slang are similar like mate and wanker, but generally they do not sound that similar if you have heard many of the accents.
