  • This was my favorite "Sesame Street" clip ever!

  • This is so grovy I'm 22 and I can't get that out of my head. BTW 21 people didn't put down their duckies.

  • Ladysmith Black Mambazo (South Africa), Barbara Walters, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Danny Devito, Kenny Loggins, and other fmaous people are there, so cool, I love this song, I was singing along a little bit.

  • The Latina woman looks like it's Celia Cruz

  • @nellie2581 It is :)

  • Put down the duckie!

  • Comment removed

  • I play the sax! :D

  • THIS IS A TUNE!

  • I play sax with my duck in the end :)

  • I remember watching this about million times when I was a kid. I had no idea who any of the grown ups in the video were :)

  • so did he put it down?

  • you know ernie, it only takes one hand to play the trumpet...this whole dilemma could've been avoided...

  • i rather the original version.

  • What happened to Pee Wee Herman?? Ohh....

  • @wiiwantr13: The scandal of 1991 happened.

  • @TherealRNO I also wonder why Steve left Blues Clues...

  • @wiiwantr13: He left because he was burnt out, so to keep the show going, the execs had Steve's cousin Joe take his place.

  • @TherealRNO Thanks for the clarification!

  • Gladys Knight and the Pips?!? WHOA!

  • I can understand why they removed Pee-wee Herman, but why did they have to remove the sports stars?

  • @HenryConway007 It was probably because the athletes wouldn't be recognized by today's kids since they were from the late-80s.

  • @HenryConway007 Why did They Remove Pee-wee?

  • @Jessyleppert Because crack is whack, but whack’s the smack, so whack off whenever you can!

  • is that alan rickman at 4:14 ???

  • @SuperGameCreator No thats Jeremey Irons

  • i've always thought the adults in this video looked really weird and scary. then again i was 7.

  • thumbs up if u were cracking up at how the people all said "duckie" and u were like O_o at weird lady dancing at 4:01

  • 18 people Couldn't put down their duckies to hit the like button...

  • 18 people refused to put down their duckies.

  • Madeline Kahn!!! Man she did a lot of muppet stuff!

  • Phil Donahue's being a fool in this sketch, lol! And Itzhak Perlman.....WHEW, I loved imitating his part when I was little! XD

  • Oh, that's the problem, Hoots! You gotta put down the saxophone if you want to play with your rubber duckie!

  • I guess two different varients of the celebrity version of Put Down the Duckie were produced, because this one differe significantly than the one on the 40 Years od Sunny Days DVD.

  • let the duckie alone!

  • my favourite song from sesame street, I also loved "its hip to be a square" and the one kermit sang..I forgot the name of the song. something about bop hop LOL

  • @marylocks92 doo wop hop

  • omg Barbara Walters!

  • list of artists appearing in video

  • You can't play the sax with something else in your hand. You have to use both hands on whatever instrument you play. I couldn't play the trombone with something else in my hand. Everybody is inspiring Ernie to put down the rubber duckie so that he can play the saxaphone.

  • Was Will Smith playing the trumpet? Wearing the hat?

  • @Dusty08148

Wynton Marsalis playing the trumpet, not will smith

    muppet.wikia.com/wiki/Wynton_Marsalis

  • @IronChefWannabe

Someone thought it was Will Smith? *puts face in hands and cries*

  • Comment removed

  • @Dusty08148

That's not will Smith, that's Wynton Marsalis.

It does kinda look like will smith, but since this is a late 80's video, will was still in his teen years, and this guy is older then will.

  • who is the african group? they did another episode where they sang the alphabet i think?

  • @sha8808

    Ladysmith Black Mambazo

    youtube.com/watch?v=uiB6vT5HT3U

they were "introduced" to the world by Paul Simon on his graceland album

  • @IronChefWannabe

Thank you so much. They are awesome...it made me smile :D

  • I never thought I'd hear Barbara Walters sing.

  • No kids post comments on this lol... Just us people over 13 stating the old days

  • lol hans gruber

  • been looking for this version with robert macneil....too bad there wasnt a version that contained both him and pete seeger.

  • let's see...john candy, andrea martin, rhea perlman and hubby danny devito, phil donahue (old school talk show host pre-oprah), ladysmith black mambazo, paul simon, madeline kahn, gladys knight + the pips, wynton marsalis, jeremy irons?, barbara walters, itzak perlman, jane curtain, and a few others i don't remember. tell me i don't know this!!!

  • what year is this from and who is the are the people with the frowns on their faces the whole time. The man and the woman who were very serious?

  • Danny Devito! :D

  • Funny how they have a guy with a clarinet in the video. Is this deliberately done in order to make the audience associate the two instruments with each other (which makes sense since the two are related)

  • @ComradeSephiroth the clarinet and the sax? How are they related? The clarinet is a woodwind and the saxophone is a brass wind.

  • @daddysluv313 Common misconception. The names woodwind and brasswind have nothing to do with brass or wood. They have to do with how the sound is created.

Woodwinds use a series of holes along the length of a tube in order to change the length of the vibrating air column and thus the pitch. Brasswinds change notes by pushing valves that detour the air through a longer or shorter path to the bell, which changes the pitch.

  • @daddysluv313 Clarinet and sax are both woodwinds that use a single reed at the top. You blow air between the reed and the mouthpiece to set up vibrations. Flutes have no reed and instead the air vibrates when it hits the edge of a hole you blow across. Oboes and bassoons have two strips of reed and you blow between them to make vibration. Brasswinds are essentially the same as oboes except your lips are the 'reed' and they use valves/slides instead of holes and keys.

  • @ComradeSephiroth LOL You're right! I totally forgot, saxophone is the only wood wind made of brass! My teacher just taught us that. I play the flute, I'm in my third year of it. I know it has nothing to do with the materials it is made of, but the sound that comes out of it and how. LOL I am so NOT telling my music teacher about this. *face reddens*

  • Excellent and strangely hypnotic.

  • Put Down the Duckie

You gotta leave the duck alone

    Put down the duckie

If you gotta play the saxaphone!

    Put down the duckie!!!

    OH YEAH!!!

    Oh

  • I loved all the celebrity appearances whenever I saw this as a kid.

  • I remember when this was a Sesame Street special event type video that came on in the evening on PBS! We all watched it as a family. Good times!

  • kevin clash also plays mr. hoots i believe

  • @gvolpe1003 he does

  • @gvolpe1003 That's right. The talented Mr Clash also performed Baby Sinclair on Dinosaurs and performs Clifford in the Muppet productions.

  • @gvolpe1003 He does.

  • THe old SCTV characters in John Candy were great, good to see Phil Donahue. Danny and Rita were great. The British couple was also funny, this was a well organized all star segment!

  • I love Danny DeVito and Rhea Pearlman in this segment! They're such a GREAT COUPLE! Ernie and this song Rock!

  • I had to put down my dog when I was 12. :(

  • Happy, 40th, SS!

    Ron Wood @0:43?

  • As I was watching this I found myself screaming out "Put down the duckie Ernie!"

    I love Sesame Street

  • I LOVE ELMO HE IS TOO CUTE

  • LOL

  • all these sesame st classics are sending chills down my spine. I didnt care how many times they repeated them coz i loved them!!

  • Damn Ernie plays some awesome sax, such an awesome song

  • i remember this!!! i loved that bird!!!!!!

  • One of the best songs from the show. I love this song.

  • @Philosophyuser what year was this taken? late 70's? 80's?

  • @eladbari The song with the video came out I believe like 1990.

  • I'm 29. I remember this song from back when I was a kid. I was so obsessed with this show when I was 5/6. I watched both the American and Canadian versions.

  • this song is the bombsicle xD

  • im almost 30...this brings me back

    = )

  • Yeah what happened to the Giants and Mets? Keith Hernandez and Mookie Wilson made a great cameo.

  • this totally influenced me in my choice of learning saxaphone in the school band. it was this and kenny G

  • ohhh man brings bas SO many memories...wait they had TWO versions of the longer version...the 25th anniversary video didn't have the cameos

  • catchy

  • I remember this, thanks SS for posting, many of these clips take me back the pinball number count was my fav.

  • Wow i actually used to watch dis i mean da elmo song has 1mil views thats amazing!!

  • Makes you wonder if they did a remake of this, which of today's celebrities that would lend their talents to it.

  • Wow He Has To Put Down the Duckie! Dont Do It!

  • Hmm something seems unfamilar about this one and the other one I saw.

I don't recognize some of the celebs in this one

  • I,ve been looking for this version for 3 years. It's the only celebrity version I saw as a kid.

  • Funny, The celebrity version I saw when I was a kid had Pee-Wee Herman.

  • There were 2 celebrity versions. This one was the only one I saw.

  • same here...

  • i think they should put the CLASSIC version on

  • Most likely they changed some of the clips because they thought it made seem from a specific era.

  • me too...I think more pre-teens and young teens are commenting on this...you must be about 18-19 at least...

  • BuddyBoy600,

I grew up on the original with Pee Wee Herman The Mets and the Giants too...and i'm barley 20 years old...

  • Where's Pee Wee? My son just reminded me Paul Reubens was in this song but he's cut from this version...weird.

  • Long Story, They had to redo the celebrity version of Put Down the Duckie, Because Paul Reubens was arrested. That's what happended.

  • Ernie: Alright... Duckie, you smell and I don't like you!

  • I remember that one!!! :^)

  • Oh hellz yeah!

  • OMG I REMEMBER THIS!!!!! I havent seen this in years!!! AWW soo many memories! Thx Sesame Street, Thx For al the Great Childhood Memories!!!

  • I like this version where celebrities participate singing this song especially Danny DeVito.

  • Ernie certainly did a great job of playing the saxaphone after he put down his Rubber Duckie. Wouldn't you agree to that, man?

  • That's great!

  • The Celebrities certainly did a great job of singing "Put Down the Duckie" with Ernie & Hoots the Owl.

  • The squeaking of Ernie's Rubber Duckie sounds very funny on this version, don't you think?

  • From 1986.

  • What happened to Richard Moranis, The New York Mets, Pee-Wee Herman, Pete Seeger, and The New York Giants?!?

  • I could be wrong, Jon, but I don't believe Rick Moranis ever participated in this song.

  • Well, Both Andrea Martin and Richard Moranis were on SCTV.

  • True but what has that got to do with "Put Down the Duckie" besides the fact that Andrea Martin is in it?

  • THAT'S the version I grew up with..that was the version on "Sing yourself silly"

  • It's like the muppets' version of blues brothers!

    One's I could remember offhand:

wynton marsalis, phil donahue, was that jeremy irons?, john candy, jane curtain, paul simon, yitzhak perlman (but he's always on sesame street), danny devito and rhea perlman, barbara walters, gladys knight (not sure if those were the pips too), Joe williams, celia cruz, gordon jackson and jean marsh, edith prickley?, and madeline kahn... Is it me or do i remember a version with pee wee herman in it?

  • This version was used when Paul Reubens was arrested at a porn theater in Florida.

  • I think you're right about that because my parents and I know that Paul Reubens was pretty naughty.

  • Is that why Jane Curtin just pops onscreen to grin and dance with her scarf for all of a fraction of a second? You gotta admit it looks pretty funny.

  • I kinda miss セサミストリート, but still a good show.

  • bonus points to whoever (under the age of 30) can name at least half the cameos in this vid! :P

  • John Candy and that's about it

  • John Candy, Danny devito, and barbara walters. that's it

  • uhh... danny devito.. gordon jackson... barbara walters??? thats all i knoe. im 15.

  • Ladysmith Black Mambazzo (and a fantastic appearance they did too :) )

  • @WeskJago On the 40 years of Sunny Days dvd, there is a different version of this, including NY Mets and NY Giants players, excluding Gladys Knight, Phil Donahue and Barbara Walters. I remember this version.

  • @WeskJago the cameos are: John Candy Celia Cruz Jane Curtin Pee Wee Herman Keith Hernandez Jeremy Irons Madeline Khan Wynton Marsalis Jean Marsh Andrea Martin Itzhak Perlman Rhea Perlman Pete Seeger Paul Simon Ladysmith Black Mambazo Mookie Wilson Mark Ingram Sean Landeta Carl Banks Karl Nelson Robert MacNeil Gladys Knight and the pips Phil Donahue Barbara Walters Joe Williams
  • @moonoink didnt mention danny devito

  • Amo a Vila Sesamo!

  • lol?

  • I'd sware this was on Sing Yourself Silly, one of the VHS that I own from Sesame Street. That's why its so familiar.

  • You're right about that, man. It is on the video "Sing Yourself Silly", along with "Put Down the Duckie".

  • wait the first version was on "Sing yourself Silly"

  • Yes. But it was on "Put Down the Duckie" afterwards.

  • I had that video when I was a kid too only it had the Giants The Mets and Pee-Wee Herman
