In the American release...it doesn't show the little air bubbles from Artax or have "Theme of Sadness" playing in the background. I think the American Film Censorship might have thought this was WAY too sad.
It made me cry as a kid...this version is even more sad. FML...

@Locke217 I can tell you ... well, the movie was so expensive to produce it had to be successful in the US. That's why american actors where chosen. The movie was produced mainly for the US and international market.
@Locke217 German movies (and European movies in general) intended for international release were usually filmed in English and then dubbed. The reasoning was that an American audience would never watch dubbed movies (and considering the low quality of American dubbings - think animes - one can understand why). I think most movies by Werner Herzog, Dario Argento, or Schlöndorffs "Das Boot" were filmed in English (if I remember correctly)

People have different opinions, frankly I think they're both strong in their own ways. The English version resorted to dramatic 80s music, and I found it very affective. This version took the hardcore silent tension method at first, then it suddenly got intense for a few seconds - then it goes to the mourning music. (I think the mourning music was good in both versions) I still have to lean for the English one though. It was more dated but I like it. IMO
@mithol lol like a sign.. this film and anything about the making of this movie.. all the different versions are great.. I like seeing it in a different way. It doesn't ruin the English version at all. I like this one also. It had much more of a greater impact..

It truly is a treasure for generations to enjoy for a long time.. I only wish more movies were made like this... without the cgi and more puppet costumes.. I know it was a lot of work but man did it pay off.
@mithol A lot of people dog on Giorgio Moroder (who composed the added english tracks to NES) because of his tendency with synthesizers but c'mon who hasn't heard of a band in the 70s-80s that didn't use synth in their music? I took a liking to his music because of it's distinctiveness in not only his method of composing but how he had creativity with it, which I do find respectable and great to listen to compared to amateur synth musicians online who do alright but not as good as moroder
That's why the story has dark points. Germans aren't afraid of telling dark stories as witnessed by the original versions of the Grimm's Brothers tales. Bloody and violent those stories are.

I didn't read all the coments, but do you know that while filming this scene the horse REALLY died? The mechanism to make him go up once the scene was done failed and he died :(
Yes, I am... :( And at the moment I'm not totally sure, I have to confirm it, but I think I remember seeing this piece of info in the DVD of the film, you know, in that kind of section where they give you curious facts about a filming. As long as I know, the horse's death was so depressing for the child playing Atreyu that the had to put an end to the filming of the film for a week.
i tried finding this information out and it seams its just a rumor and the contraption didnt put the horses head fully under...i dunno but if that happened thats insane, i also saw another video where the camera is on the directors face the whole time while this exact scene is being filmed and even after the scene is over and its a cut nothing seams to happen...
yes the horse really did die. not the one in this scene. the horse in this scene is named Silver Dollar. he died in 2003. the horse that went under i believe was named Pegasus. he had a grey mane and tail
With all the sadness in the scene, I do remember in the cinema a few bursts of laughter when Bastian appears crying too during reading this event in the book. (I wasn't one of them) The scene still brings tears to my eyes...
This song is on the soundtrack is very nice. It appears briefly when Atreju is flying in space. Always wondered why it was so long. I think the U.S. release sound sadder.
Wow. I never realized how much the original score was chopped-up and shuffled in this movie. It's familiar, but all mixed-up.
At least they didn't overhaul the entire score like in Legend. In that movie, Jerry Goldsmith wrote a perfectly good score, which was replaced by a more 'timely' soundtrack by Tangerine Dream, an 80s band now utterly forgotten.
Tangerine Dream did the masterpiece soundtrack to the film "The Keep" and they're are certainly not forgotten by me. Personally, I have always held to a higher regard TD's soundtrack for the film "Legend" over Jerry Goldsmith's. Jerry Goldsmith's Track 21 Score for the film "Total Recall" is mind blowing though. He had talent nonetheless. I have the soundtrack for this film. I'm not sure what you're trying to say but I've known nothing less of the film that its great music and cinema.

To back his ^^ story up Barret Oliver did an interview recently as part of the production of a film called 'Cold Mountain' - someone asked him similar Q's regarding this movie. He laughed stating they were as "fantastic at the ideas in the movie itself".
no you are wrong. Noah Hathaway (Atreyu) did his own stunts in the film and was injured many times. He was thrown of his horse whilst riding it and it stepped on him afterwards, He nearly drowned whilst filming in the swamp of sadness after getting his leg caught on something and he was pulled underwater and when they rescued him from under the water he was unconsious, and he almost lost an eye in the fight scene with the Gmork as One of the claws on his paws poked him in the face...
The robot was so heavy that he lost his breath as well when he was hit to the ground by it. They only made one shot due to the risk that he would get seriously wounded

The film is wonderful, but I don't understand one thing: If this is "swamp of sadness" and the horse drown because of his sadness, what about Atreyu? He had to be even more sad, when his horse had died.
The Auryn protected him - in the book he offers to put it on Artax but Artax refuses, saying it would endanger Atreyu (in the book, Artax could talk).

oh man SAD SAD from this version! whats worse the horse squaled my goodness!!! I think all types of animals get these sad tones when sick and are about to die. my cat did that too and now died this year on MArch 28th.

As a matter of fact... dying horses seem to do these horrible screams. I once read "Im Westen nichts neues" (All Quiet on the Western Front) and there it is said, that the sound of dying horses is the most terrifying noise, one won't be able to forget...
i have to agree with you. i found a horse dead in her stall...i thought she was sick and then noticed she was not breathing. i ran out of the barn to get the owner. i was crying and hyperventalating.

This version is shit, the squiling does nothing for what is in the normal version a very very emotional scene that made me cry as a kid and still strikes me hard today.
I disagree in a way. In the other version as soon as the horse gives up the sublte music starts and then gets heavier which makes it so much more emotional. This imo just seems a bit corny with the pig squeels.
Imo, this version is sad, which goes very well with the whole "Swamps of Sadness" idea, the other version tries too hard to be dramatic and just ends up being cheesy, plus the whole synthesizer sound ages the film tremendously. Mind you, that's just my opinion, I'm sure it depends a lot on what you've grown up with.
Ye I suppose you make a point. I grew up watching this film from an early age and have seen it so many times. Really is one of my top films that I grew up watching, others include stand by me, radio flyer and the lion king.
I guess it depends somewhat on what you've grown up with, but I find the Doldinger version much more beautiful. I also love that the middle part has no music. The Moroder version is dramatic, but imo the Doldinger one goes better with the whole "Swamps of Sadness" idea.
In the novel Artax is a speaking horse and his last wish is, that he wants Atreju to leave and not watch him die... THAT makes you cry your eyes out...
You know what's funny is that this music IS heard in the American version, it's just in a different place. It plays when Falcor and Atreyu are flying through space and "all the land is gone".

I never know that there is an alternate score for this scene.
Music is not trying to be epic - only silence can be heard and the finish is wonderful reminds me Hans Zimmer work.
Another great work of Petersen & Doldinger after Das Boot.

the American version also cut out the oxygen bubbles at 2:52-3:03 and 3:13-3:20
when i first saw this part of the original i was bawling my eyes out. i showed my twin sis and then she started bawling as well

the first part of the score in this version is darker and more appropriate for the tone of the scene.
Nevertheless the lack of music then doesn't give enought power for the drama wich is cleray not the case in the US release.
I guess the mix of the two versions would enhance the whole thing up...

This song is on the soundtrack is very nice. It appears briefly when Atreju is flying in space. Always wondered why it was so long. I think the U.S. release sound sadder.

Wow. I never realized how much the original score was chopped-up and shuffled in this movie. It's familiar, but all mixed-up.
At least they didn't overhaul the entire score like in Legend. In that movie, Jerry Goldsmith wrote a perfectly good score, which was replaced by a more 'timely' soundtrack by Tangerine Dream, an 80s band now utterly forgotten.

Tangerine Dream did the masterpiece soundtrack to the film "The Keep" and they're are certainly not forgotten by me. Personally, I have always held to a higher regard TD's soundtrack for the film "Legend" over Jerry Goldsmith's. Jerry Goldsmith's Track 21 Score for the film "Total Recall" is mind blowing though. He had talent nonetheless. I have the soundtrack for this film. I'm not sure what you're trying to say but I've known nothing less of the film that its great music and cinema.

He "had talent"? Goldsmith was one of the greatest composers of the 20th century for sure. And the whole "Total Recall" score was mind blowing though.

To clarify; no horses died in the making of this movie and Atreyu didn't get stuck on some platform & lose conciousness in the swamp scene.
Though I don't have a reference, this has been clarified by the actors and production staff.
Google it.

To back his ^^ story up Barret Oliver did an interview recently as part of the production of a film called 'Cold Mountain' - someone asked him similar Q's regarding this movie. He laughed stating they were as "fantastic at the ideas in the movie itself".

no you are wrong. Noah Hathaway (Atreyu) did his own stunts in the film and was injured many times. He was thrown of his horse whilst riding it and it stepped on him afterwards, He nearly drowned whilst filming in the swamp of sadness after getting his leg caught on something and he was pulled underwater and when they rescued him from under the water he was unconsious, and he almost lost an eye in the fight scene with the Gmork as One of the claws on his paws poked him in the face...

The robot was so heavy that he lost his breath as well when he was hit to the ground by it. They only made one shot due to the risk that he would get seriously wounded

The film is wonderful, but I don't understand one thing: If this is "swamp of sadness" and the horse drown because of his sadness, what about Atreyu? He had to be even more sad, when his horse had died.

The Auryn protected him - in the book he offers to put it on Artax but Artax refuses, saying it would endanger Atreyu (in the book, Artax could talk).

Moroders version maybe was ok in the 80's, but sounds a bit passé today. Doldingers is like classical music and lives on 4-ever.

oh man SAD SAD from this version! whats worse the horse squaled my goodness!!! I think all types of animals get these sad tones when sick and are about to die. my cat did that too and now died this year on MArch 28th.

As a matter of fact... dying horses seem to do these horrible screams. I once read "Im Westen nichts neues" (All Quiet on the Western Front) and there it is said, that the sound of dying horses is the most terrifying noise, one won't be able to forget...

i have to agree with you. i found a horse dead in her stall...i thought she was sick and then noticed she was not breathing. i ran out of the barn to get the owner. i was crying and hyperventalating.
i hope no one has to go through that. turns out she died in her sleep

I disagree in a way. In the other version as soon as the horse gives up the sublte music starts and then gets heavier which makes it so much more emotional. This imo just seems a bit corny with the pig squeels.

Imo, this version is sad, which goes very well with the whole "Swamps of Sadness" idea, the other version tries too hard to be dramatic and just ends up being cheesy, plus the whole synthesizer sound ages the film tremendously. Mind you, that's just my opinion, I'm sure it depends a lot on what you've grown up with.

Ye I suppose you make a point. I grew up watching this film from an early age and have seen it so many times. Really is one of my top films that I grew up watching, others include stand by me, radio flyer and the lion king.

nah artax didnt die. The kid almost drowned filming this scene thought. He got pulled under with the elevatot they used and went unconscious.

I guess it depends somewhat on what you've grown up with, but I find the Doldinger version much more beautiful. I also love that the middle part has no music. The Moroder version is dramatic, but imo the Doldinger one goes better with the whole "Swamps of Sadness" idea.

You know what's funny is that this music IS heard in the American version, it's just in a different place. It plays when Falcor and Atreyu are flying through space and "all the land is gone".
