well last year our pilot completely missed the runway going through low cloud and we touched down and had to go back up again on full thrust, not a word was said from the staff untill the plane had made it back up. It was terrifying. They said that there was another aircraft on the runway, but we saw nothing of this. Later we were told the pilot was training.
This is really good.. pilots did an awesome job there... but that 737 looked like it took a bit of a hammering on the gear.... must be tough things :D...
this is a great example of why real human pilots are still needed....I'll show this to anyone who still tells me commercial airliners can just as easily be landed on autopilot....and I hear that a lot.
that's why their salary is tenfold better than say, a bus driver's. not that there's anything wrong with that profession, but if autopilot were in control of the planes' most critical maneuvers (landing etc.), then they'd be no more than bus drivers with a view.
on a normal approach even a standard visual the pilot is almost always requiered by airline SOP to stay on the ILS with autopilot if the runway has it untill around DH if not CAT3/2 Autoland. This case is a charted visual which they had autopilot for ILS 4 untill DIALS (OM) then made a turn to the east with autopilot as they descended to follow the LIE. the turn it off to make the base and final turn. But yes, man over machine.

actually I retract my original statement. our birds (namely the latter-model 737, 777, 787, A380, etc) are very well capable of T/O, vectoring, and landing entirely remotely.
but....who'd get on a plane that's pilotless? marketing is always the deciding factor, regardless of technology. just an...empty, but true point.
of course machine has WAY surpassed men....but, that's their dirty secret.
@StrinGnich3 yes i agree with you too.they shoudnt replace the pilot with a stupid machine.its better if someone is at control cuz we ovouisily know that the human brain is smarter than some kind of machine.if that plane was controled by a automatic machine, those people would of problay died on that landing :/.
Ahh yes the infamous expressway visual. I have been to the spot where this video was filmed, and I have taken several photos of the RWY 31 approaches coming in over Shea Stadium (home of the NY Mets). This a/c landed on 31, the converse being 13. This is an exciting approach although I'd prefer to land RWY 4 directly over the Grand Central PKWY or it's converse RWY 22 in which the last thing you'd see before tarmac is Riker's Island...an island most New Yorkers don't wish to reside on ;)
Prior comment suggesting this was a S-turn landing is very correct. I learned to fly at LGA when single engine prop trainers were allowed. Even I did S-turns to keep from running into departing jets. ATC keeps spacing too tight sometimes.
perfect technique, wheels into wind down first and straighten up on touchdown.. did seem a bit fast and hard though?? I can't talk im not a pilot yet!
I'd hardly call this a perfect landing or a perfect approach.

looks to me in order to save the approach the delta pilot decided to s turn you can see the previous departure climbing at the end of the runway
continental757 4 years ago
Nice landing indeed, but that's a pretty common approach pattern. Any trained commercial pilot should be able to handle that.
