They used 2 cylinders running counter to each other. All furniture was nailed down. When the room cylinder moved involving the camera cylinder was moving counter. Fred ingeniously used this as a prop when the cylinder was ready to go from one wall to another he played with it stepping from the wall to the ceiling etc. untill the cycle was completed. Very very clever stuff.
watch the making of the "fly" the one with jeff goldblum .when he start going through the fly transformation he started running up the walls and hanging from the ceiling the same ...They using the same exact special effect/camera tricks as the Fly.well the fly used the same effects from that clip.

the putting on the ritz cane stunt was using springs on the floor. i noticed them whilst watching it on tv... with the help from the tv presenter highlighting it...
There are air holes in the floor, if you watch when he drops it the one time and dances over, by the time he gets back to the cane -and the camera stays on the same level as before- it's several centimeters up from where it was. It's all just careful placement and air streams.

I can only assume (unless anyone knows any different) that the few movable objects in the room (chair, photo, hat, tailcoat etc.) were removed from the set when not in the frame, or surely they would have shifted when the room did? cjcolonio explantion below is correct. The room was built were it will rotate in a circle. The camera is bolted to the floor. When the room rotates, the camera rotates too. Fred Astaire is always on level ground. When projected, it appears Fred is the one turning upside down.

The irritating part of this is that the scene here starts so early you get only about a fifth of the entire routine. Astair wass always fresh and innovative, not just repeating steps over and over. I like the one where he dances with the hat rack as well.
Take a look at another great, great dance scene from a motion picture. Fred Astaire, himself, said that this is one of the greatest dance routines ever performed on film.

cjcolonio explantion below is correct. The room was built were it will rotate in a circle. The camera is bolted to the floor. When the room rotates, the camera rotates too. Fred Astaire is always on level ground. When projected, it appears Fred is the one turning upside down.

"Astaire" was a name taken by him and his sister in 1905, when they were taking instruction in dance, speaking, and singing in preparation for developing an act. Family legend attributes it to an uncle surnamed "L'Astaire".

The irritating part of this is that the scene here starts so early you get only about a fifth of the entire routine. Astair wass always fresh and innovative, not just repeating steps over and over. I like the one where he dances with the hat rack as well.

He is NOT THAT GOOD! Personally I see no difference betwee him and Frank Sinatra or Dean Martin... He's got a decent voice and he dances alright! So what??? Micheal Jackson, Sammy Davis Jr. and a TON of other entertainers and dancers have said that they were all inspired by this guy, but I see NOTHING special!
Can someone PLEASE explain to me whats SO GOOD about this guy??? I've seen Sammy Davis Jr. and a TON of ohters who can outdance this guy and make him look like a clown!

In your 'list', you forgot someone rather important - Gene Kelly. Fred Astaire is a phenomenal dancer. Period. He's light and air and perfectly on cue unless he chooses not to be. There is the diffrence, his total control. He was a master of dance. I have never seen a dance that Astaire preformed that wasn't amazing. Personally, every one is entitled to their own opinion. You can have yours as I believe Sinatra was more of a self-centered egotist considering how he treated Dean Martin.

Word. Heck I'm in my early 20s and I respect and appreciate the skill and talent of past innovators like Astaire, Kelly, Brown, etc. The stuff they did was by no means easy.
On another note .... I've been trying to find that coat hanger dance by Fred. Anyone know where I can find it?

yeah I totally agree! I never EVER watched black and white movies but when I took at theatre/film appreciation class, I fell in love with all the classics! they are amazing! I wish they would make movies like that again :( I miss them but there is enough from the past to last me a life time! I love them! kelly, astaire, cary grant! love em all!
