  • This movie is 100% in the public domain - the copyright elapsed and was never renewed. WMG has no business having the audio removed. It simply doesn't belong to them.

  • So Warner Media Group (WMG) want to yank all the audio off of you tube. Well...FUCK YOU.

I will go out of my way to ignore any purchase with Warner on it....and again......FUCK YOU!

  • big business is hatred fuck wmg

  • three cheers for fair use.

  • oh wtf, this is gay

  • Common WMG! hes fuking walking up walls! god dammit!

  • Fuck you WMG

  • AGREED.

  • It's all about the money, isn't it WMG. Roast in Hell you blood sucking parasites!

  • I hate to be so direct, but, fuck WMG. This has gone too far.

  • =´( A piece of art the world looses...

  • Folks, we have to change this idiot legislation. Do you like what you see? This video is a masterpiece, a monument to art. And some filthy bureaucrats ruin it! (They even do not make more money through this). Some things must change some time. I just cannot understand the term ''private property'' since this scene has many decades that has been aired.

  • stupid WMG policy.

on the other hand, this is brilliant! you'd never know Fred was already in his early 50s looking at the way he danced.

  • wtf

  • man this is crap...another video with no sound.....i'm sick of these vultures..they can't make money off every damn thing..this video is 50 + years old!! gee wiz man!

  • I imagine this could be reenabled if the uploader would dispute it as fair use.

  • Ah come on, this movie has been in the public domain for years! Music corporations are really hitting rock bottom when it comes to respect from the public.

  • coool!! Man everything that was already thought of or invented is just a repeat now but what can i invent man.... or bring back..... (sigh) im gonna create something everyone will love and be in awe of.

  • Crap laws... do they own the rights forever? This is historical already and should be free!

  • It is free. This movie is in the public domain and you can download it from the internet. I don't know what youtube's problem is.

  • What the fuck does WMG have to do with this? tossers, i hope their ceo's die in a fire.

  • Miserable WMG bastards.

  • iF u have a laptop turn it sideways and upside down u can follow the stunt.

  • masterful legendary filming, wmg ( world music gluts) go away and leave the future of " you tube" and similar sites and modern people to the obvious future of "it's all gonna be free !!!" and you corporate losers , will have to look elsewhere for your money that you never deserved,

  • fuck the wmg

  • WMG, this is an ancient art piece, you idiots are stifling the study & appreciation of history. What possible gain do you get from not "auth0orising" the sound? idiots..

  • youtube the Nicholas Brothers in Stormy Weather and just sit back and watch the whole video.

  • WMG blocking a song 60 years old. Come on, get with the program... sheesh.

  • They used 2 cylinders running counter to each other. All furniture was nailed down. When the room cylinder moved involving the camera cylinder was moving counter. Fred ingeniously used this as a prop when the cylinder was ready to go from one wall to another he played with it stepping from the wall to the ceiling etc. untill the cycle was completed. Very very clever stuff.

  • Its hard to believe that Winston Churchill's daughter was in this movie. She had zero talent

  • watch the making of the "fly" the one with jeff goldblum .when he start going through the fly transformation he started running up the walls and hanging from the ceiling the same ...They using the same exact special effect/camera tricks as the Fly.well the fly used the same effects from that clip.

  • and if it doesnt just convert it to a divx file

  • just re upload it

  • You know what.the audio already wasnt the right audio.and now its gone.but no theres nothing.if you dont like the classics as it is dont tamper with it adding your own preference of music.

  • That is fantastic! ...however disabling the audio is uncool. Does anyone know how he did the levitating cane trick in "putting on the ritz"? ...is it just a string? you don't see a string...maybe magnets?

This rotating room thing is sweet!

  • the putting on the ritz cane stunt was using springs on the floor. i noticed them whilst watching it on tv... with the help from the tv presenter highlighting it...

  • There are air holes in the floor, if you watch when he drops it the one time and dances over, by the time he gets back to the cane -and the camera stays on the same level as before- it's several centimeters up from where it was. It's all just careful placement and air streams.

  • why don't you get it authorized

  • Yeah because disabling the audio and showing themselves to be douchebags really makes me want to go buy this DVD. I really want to give them my money now! These WMG idiots need to crawl back into the putrid hole from wench they came.

  • It's actually Youtube, not WMG, that took the initiative to censor the audio. WMG had sued Google, who owns Youtube, and to get back at WMG they've been censoring the audio from many WMG products. It's been going on for at least several months now.

  • how on earth was that done can anyone tell me?

  • Its called a gimble.

  • The room and its contents were slowly turned upside down together with the camera. Things you would ordinarily expect to be loose such as chairs and pictures were fixed within the room so they wouldn't slide or fall.

  • match made in heaven

  • Here's a trick for all of you guys who want to see or hear something that's been F*****g removed by these F****rs:

    Go to Google video.

I found LOADS LOADS AND LOADS of Fred Astaire videos that is not in You Tube.

For instance, I found this clip, WITH sound while searching for Fred Astaire clips! Its very worth it!

WMG can go to hell by the way.

  • man, fuck wmg - ausbomben!

  • instead of being obnoxious cock goblins, WMG could just remove the entire fucking video.

  • WMG can go to hell.

  • Why? so you buy the dvd, well, I,ll do that anyway, have most of Fred on dvd does not mean I enjoy his dance moves on clips also, DAMM, from all the artist Astaire clips are removed the most, like everything what,s on tube is to buy on dvd NOT !!!!!

  • This is bullshit, Royal Wedding is in the public domain. I just d/led it from Internet Archive, but didn't want to skip around to get to this dance scene.

  • Luckily enough the Pirate Partys all over the world are increasing in influence so that those crazy copyright abuses will stop.

  • WHy isnt there any fu king sound you barny bastards, this is oler then your grandmother no copy shite needed fook heads!

  • "copyrite" fucking bull shit. Shallow money grabbing arse holes.

  • fucking WMG - wtf man, copyright my ass! If this is illegal then all of the fucking videos on youtube are illegal as well. Fucking dumb ass - do they hav shit for brains???

  • no fucking sound?

  • Oh great. A msucial number without music. That's so great.

    Well done WMG. Congratz.

  • WMG just have no respect for performing arts.

  • that's so freaking awesome! i just wish that there was sound

  • and i was gonna put this in my IPod...

Why??? I Love Fred Astaire!! WMG...Why you do this????

    WMG...YOU GO TO HELL!!!!!!!

  • why WMG? why?

  • Oh man! This is my favorite scene in a movie ever! Too bad we can't hear the music. The song that is in the movie is the best! This scene is amazing with the music!

  • Great art ruined by greedy bastards. I'm sure all the deceased artists who made this need the royalties very badly. F*** Warner Music Group.

  • lol. they copied thin in "Interview with the vampire"

  • WMG sucks.

  • Alright WMG. You win. I guess I'll just have to download the full thing and distribute it to all my friends instead of simply watching this 3 minute clip.

  • LOL FUCKIN'

    WORD

  • right on dude lol

  • major props

  • People have been suggesting boycotting WMG for this very reason.

    I'm in.

  • I'm with you on that!

  • Any lawyers out there who want to take on WMG so that we can enjoy this sample?

  • Note to the morons at WMG: People will buy your product if you let them hear the music.

  • Thank you Diane and Bob for the video. I am sure It will make a difference in my dance with Marcella.

    Paul

  • Lame, without audio it's not worth watching. :(

  • Stupid ass WMG.

  • Happy 110th birthday Fred

    u rock

  • old media will never learn

  • this was so great...........now it sucks

  • omfg i got so pissed when i found out the sound has been disabled by wmg

    damn them all to hell!

    i <3 fred astaire! <3

  • damn copyright crap! who gives a f***? it's not like this guys making money off this clip!

  • ut needs to be shut and disabled as it is the most bigoted and disabled site -they are only good at suspending or disabling -

  • I am also Boycotting! The Swines

  • i am going to boycott WMG from this day forward.

    WHO'S WITH ME!

  • im with ya. CUNTS!

  • they are the greediest company, aparently they think the money they have got isnt enough, while hannah montana, high school musical, disneyland and disney channel are giving them loads.

i think they are doing so they can make us buy their cd/dvds. which i dont think is working.

  • The camera trickery was done by using 2 cylinders moving opposite directions. The camera was placed in one of them and in the other was Fred dancing. All furniture was nailed down and when the cylinder moved Fred was dancing in you will notice he gos back and forth until it stabilizes. That is repeated until all 4 walls have cycled thru the cylinder. That as a very clever set up. I saw how it was done on a program and the man who designed the set went thru the set up.

  • At least we got the moves.

  • I just don't get Warner Music Group. Its not like they are making tons of sales with this older material. At this point, I just want to use stuff to teach in my US history Class. WMG, you are hurting our children!

  • I, too, use this stuff to teach, and I completely agree with you. WMG would make more money if they'd let people sample this stuff, because many viewers then want to go out and buy Warner Home Videos as a result. But the corporations just don't seem to get it.

  • Well, you can always rent the film and listen to the song. I've seen this video even before the audio was disabled. And, about the scene, I think it's remarkable the Astaire was dancing on the walls & ceiling; it was a memorable part!

  • This is so lame. Those ******** - this is supposed to be n the public domain now.

  • warner blows ---copyright my ass

  • Wow this was the first stunts on videos!

  • Reported for copyright violation lol owned. who won? I did. Idiots.

  • Yay for you

  • Comment removed

  • Stuipid copyrights.

  • Fred Astaire is so cool!!

  • How can Warner claim copyright in a public domain video clip??

  • Easy, cause no one contests and fights with big name companies anymore. No one stands up for free content on the internet anymore, companies like warner can just claim anything they want nowadays online.

  • uy q onda??????????? no se escucha nadaa!! =(

  • Have a look at my Fred Astare video please.a comment would be appreciated thanks people.

  • stpd youtube.....

  • fred helps my depression - 40 yr old puerto rican mom of 5 from ny, thank you

  • Really good special effects for back then... I wonder how they did it.

  • it's a spinning room with everything fixed in place, including the camera. the movie weird science used it, along with many other movies. even nsync used it in a music video. but at its most famous, lionel richie used it in his "dancing on the ceiling" music video.

  • Don't forget that 2001: A Space Odyssey also did something similar, albeit sans dance number.

  • Wonderfull, shame the clip is cut thought.

  • nice , but show the whole scene or nothing at all, thank you

  • This is absolutely amazing, it must have really blown people away at the time. The attention to detail is faultless too (I note how the curtains remain hanging in an apparently downwards fashion). I can only assume (unless anyone knows any different) that the few movable objects in the room (chair, photo, hat, tailcoat etc.) were removed from the set when not in the frame, or surely they would have shifted when the room did? Just wondering. Hard to believe Fred was over 50 when he did this! Wow!

  • How dare you stop the video in the middle of his dance! Blasphemy!

  • Exactly what I was thinking. This clip does not even get to the part where he starts tap dancing.

  • cjcolonio explantion below is correct. The room was built were it will rotate in a circle. The camera is bolted to the floor. When the room rotates, the camera rotates too. Fred Astaire is always on level ground. When projected, it appears Fred is the one turning upside down.

  • Really, I thought it was magic

  • LOL, REALLY?

  • At first I thought that was a picture of Elvis he was holding, lol

  • i'm doing a report on him!! please help!

he was born as Fred Austerlitz, does anyone know why he goes by Fred Astaire??

  • "Astaire" was a name taken by him and his sister in 1905, when they were taking instruction in dance, speaking, and singing in preparation for developing an act. Family legend attributes it to an uncle surnamed "L'Astaire".

  • I think that name was too "Jewish".. a lot of Jews change their names when they get famous in order to be more mainstreamed. Some were even ashamed of it.

  • I would say that a lot of migrants to America *had* to change their names in order to be integrated into American society. This was mentioned in the novel Middlesex

  • what makes this masterclass work for me is the unbelievable choreography, and of course Astaire,s interpretation of it,it is a testament to his unique god given talent and only he could have pulled it off, everything is smooth and beautifully crafted, when things look easy you just know that a remarkable amount of hard bloody work went into it,may he NEVER be forgotten,my one true idol,

  • Whoa, this is ingenious.

  • all the room is a scenarie ... when he moves, all the room moves too and a camera is there too is like a roding cube ^^ xD , just move ur neck and u well see =D

  • Well he IS Fred Astaire...

  • the best actor and entertainer EVER! period. im admitting it and im sander cohen! (bioshock reference people!)

  • I wish dance classes really could teach you how to do that.

  • I liked the dance, but where's the rest of the song/number?

  • wow...

  • That is soo cool!

  • they had a camera in that site, and the room was getin around, or is he spiderman, wich one is right?

  • I think this is truely insurmountable and I agree with Uberathlete: the elegance in films of yore (and the actors) disappeared this last time what very bad...

  • How he do that man??!! Awesome!!

  • Because he's Fred Astaire and he's magic!

  • magnets in his shoes!

  • GOD I WANT TO BE HIM

  • dude, no wonder he is walking on the roof... he is in love

  • Check that, look for the videos of : The Nicholas brothers!

  • Nice little effect there, i'm sure at the time it was probably quite a big deal.

  • naww i wish they had the rest of the video up there! it stops when it gets to the best bits! so clever, these days it'd be all CGI and shitty looking :P

  • that was the coolest thing i've ever seen in my life.

  • moonwalk is the coolest thing I've seen in my life

  • The irritating part of this is that the scene here starts so early you get only about a fifth of the entire routine. Astair wass always fresh and innovative, not just repeating steps over and over. I like the one where he dances with the hat rack as well.

  • Hey what about the music!

  • Take a look at another great, great dance scene from a motion picture. Fred Astaire, himself, said that this is one of the greatest dance routines ever performed on film.

  • Not that good? Are you a total retard? Have you truly EVER seen anyone move that light and perfect? You must be an ass that needs to blow his horn ( or others, gay) to act smart. I have seen THE BEST, martial artists included, and no one moves that light, except HIM !!!

  • In your 'list', you forgot someone rather important - Gene Kelly. Fred Astaire is a phenomenal dancer. Period. He's light and air and perfectly on cue unless he chooses not to be. There is the diffrence, his total control. He was a master of dance. I have never seen a dance that Astaire preformed that wasn't amazing. Personally, every one is entitled to their own opinion. You can have yours as I believe Sinatra was more of a self-centered egotist considering how he treated Dean Martin.

  • You pitiful child. There's so much ill-informed stupidity all over your posts that would take way too much time and typing space correct. So I'm not even going to bother, especially since you're clearly not interested in facts. Go stick with "The Hills" and other stuff more up your alley.

  • Well, if Sammy Davis Jr, Michael Jackson, etc. say they've been inspired and you DON'T SEE IT then is you who's got to check your eyes...or I think there are certain fine things in life that go beyond of the understsanding of the poor brained people...Fred Astaire was EXTREMELY GOOD...go check your goddamn eyes...

  • Word. Heck I'm in my early 20s and I respect and appreciate the skill and talent of past innovators like Astaire, Kelly, Brown, etc. The stuff they did was by no means easy.

On another note .... I've been trying to find that coat hanger dance by Fred. Anyone know where I can find it?

  • Hi uber,

The dance with the hat/clothes stand is to a song called "Sunday Jumps," so try searching for that.

  • Great! Thank you.

  • yeah I totally agree! I never EVER watched black and white movies but when I took at theatre/film appreciation class, I fell in love with all the classics! they are amazing! I wish they would make movies like that again :( I miss them but there is enough from the past to last me a life time! I love them! kelly, astaire, cary grant! love em all!

  • True that. There's a certain sense of elegance and enchantment in films of yore that's not as prevalent today.

  • i know seriously! I miss that

  • This is back when CGI didn't exist, so what they're doing is without anything that would need to be edited out (like a harness).

That is what makes it doubly impressive.

  • What are you on? Sure michael jackson can moonwalk...but astaire can DANCE! his rhythm and airiness of his movement just akes him flot above the floor with ease! he is iconic!

  • Wait, Are you Saying Michael Can Only Moonwalk but Not Dance :S
