I hear your opinion but after five years of being here you start to notice that really if you leave kids to do what they feel is right usually it works. I think the reason why people think that kids don't know what's right for them is because they never get the chance to show the world that they do. I am not saying that we don't need adults because sometimes we do. But I think if a child is given freedom and right to speak they're mind they'll go far, maybe make a few mistakes but who doesn't!
yeah, this school seems awesome and democratic and pupil healthy and all that. but how are the pupils going to learn about consequences before it's too late?!
Let's face it, adults are more wise than the pupils and generally know what's best for them. The concept is good but doesn't seem practical. Lazy people do need a shove!!
I myself am sitting in my chair at Summerhill school right now, feeling really happy that there are so many people who appreciate what it really is.
Many people just judge and point fingers, cause they don't bother to take the time to understand, that freedom does not always mean running around and causing mayhem.
We maybe an odd bunch, but we are very good at running the school we live in and I just wanted to thank you all for writing such lovely comments.
@blackcherrylovealot So lucky... I understnad because you wantto learn and you cna show what YOU want to do ! I hope you have a awesome time there :) Bye x
@shootingstarskycats Thanks :) It means a lot that people understand the school because a lot of people don't and criticise the methods and strategies. Enjoy your life :D xx

I have to admit the A.S Neill is an amazing person.. But I don't understand how children have discipline. how can a school like this set them up for society (which A.S Neill said is tainted). I guess no one will fully understand unless they went actually there... looks like lots of fun for the children :)
There is a school in Seattle called Nova High School aka Project Nova or The Nova Project and it is the best school I have ever been too. Because the students get a say in what they do. We choose our own classes and we help run the school as well with student/teacher committees which are awesome. Nova High School allows people of all types, including Gay, Lesbian, Gender Queer, We are what we want to be. We don't have rules either. There just suggestions and they work. Nova rules!
Excellent video! I really enjoyed it. I remember my mother saying that if she could go back in time she would have sent me to a school like summerhill instead of 'normal' school. I wish she had!
I agreee u cant judge it unless u went there! its a fantastic school i went there and i loved every minute of school life it and how many people can say that!!
what an absolute load of twaddle...have any of these pupil come out of the school as great philosophers, leaders, writers or anything of any worth. In todays society sending your child to this school means you are either rich and stupid, or just stupid. Why on earth would you want your child to come out of school with no qualifications, no ability to get into university, or any meaningful job whatsoever...
In schools like this the point is that you can choose to take exams and get qualifications, and many pupils go on to achieve well in university and life. Different systems suit different people. I went to a normal school but i spent the first 4 years studying subjects that did not play to my talents, interests or aims and for the most part wasted my time. Freedom to persue my interests and academic talents would have radically improved my school experience.
I discovered Summerhill only last week, we talked about it at school.
I am reading the book just now and I find it fascinating. I think it's a really good idea but people don't believe in it because they are blinded by what they think is good for their children. They don't want them to be losers.
But according to the people who went there, it's an amazing school. Aren't they the better ones to judge?
They don;t work according to toher schools standars, but they turn out well adjusted, democratic, logical, self-motivated people with excellent interpersonal skills.
you never went to this school, i bet, so how would you know it never works?
it seems very well thought out and i wish there was a school like that where i live that i could go to cause i have issues with sitting exams and if i didn't have to...well anyway...yeah
I wish I had gone to this school when I was a kid! I always recommend it to people I meet. I'm also enjoying the BBC movie about it being shown at the moment.
Great vid and many happy memories.I went to Summerhill 17yrs ago for a year when i was 11 iI wish i could of stayed longer.I wish i still knew the kids and teachers.
Glad its still going strong, cracking school.I went to 8 schools due to moving and Summerhill was the best.
@JackCa17 Maybe the second best! Or a tie, because Sudbury Valley is definitely the best.

Gerrison Landsdowne (Director, Childrens Right's Office)
"It does encourage to a very great extent children to QUESTION and CHALLENGE rather than to CONFORM ... constituting a THREAT."
On reading this one could imagine the school's function was to raise homicidal maniacs!
Negative knee-jerk comments are prompted by those who obviously haven't read A.S. Neill's book.
See what 'Gleichschritt' [Marching in step] did for Hitler's Germany!
Summerhill produces humane people not robots.

wow...
sheer loveliness.
thank you. : )
We just have to keep saying,
over and over and over again,
we want a school system which
feels good,
feels right,
feels true.
No child gets left behind.
