Scientists work by creating a hypothesis, using it to make predictions and testing/observing to see if it is correct.
Until the atomic hypothesis had actually been tested and observed it was just an hypothesis; a wild story based on presumption. It was shown to be observable "fact".

I have a Playlist on my channel, a series of videos about The Inquisition by BereanBeacon, an ex-Catholic. While it is a fairly good presentation on the history of The Inquisition, I was disappointed that no mention was made about Galileo and how he was persecuted and placed under house arrest. No, all he talked about was how other Christians, who were not Catholic, were violently persecuted, which of course is all true, but, no mention of Galileo, which I found to be a really big disappoint.

What puzzles me is why it should make any difference whatsoever to the truth of evolution if prehistoric termites were EXACTLY the same some extant species. There seems to an assumption that evolution is some kind of linear process producing better & better forms. In my understanding nothing could be further from the truth; forms persist SO LONG AS THEY WORK. If a better solution is thrown up by nature it MAY eventually take over, but not even that is a certainty.
