i think the characters were in nact and verruckt cuz they teleported or travelled there in serch for the golden rod and went to these maps due to them have involvement of group 935.(they traveled to these maps after kino and before call of the dead but the time line is messed up and not in order of release date. eg kino, nact ..... call of the dead, shangri la, ascensin moon)

The second idea sounds better because with the first one whatever actions they did in the past would alter the future, so going back in time to stop it would already have happened if you know what I mean, unless something went wrong and then its just a giant cycle again.

i really want another zombies map as well, but have you ever thought of the death song for moon? by this i mean that when all of you get downed the easter egg song of the next map plays right? like the death song for kino is the easter egg song for ascension and so on. back in world at war, even on der riese, the death song is the easter egg song for kino, but moon has no death song(samantha's laugh is etended though) makes u think right?

Maybe the story in the next cod game might be that they get to the teleporter just when richtofen swapped bodies with Samantha, and they go to the past somehow and maybe they kill or trick richtofen into maybe making a cure or a new weapon to stop Sam then kill him after. Just spitballin here.

What I think whats gonna happen in the next game is that they might do two separate story modes in one game on maybe again about ww1 or two and the whole zombie story line. And maybe you'll be Dempsey or Rictophen Also people might want multiple player so they might do the regular online playing and then the new online zombie stuff.

IGN did some article thingy about a rumor that the 2012 CoD is going to be a horror type game, so we might be getting the zombies only game we have wanted for so long. I do like your theories though, however, I would like to see something where they actually get Richtofen out of the machine, they fight off whatever beast/demon is in there controlling the zombies, and then the zombies just kinda stop. Then Nikolai wakes up and thinks to himself "Was I sleepping?! I need some vodka." XD

Great theory, however I think that up to now all the time travelling that has occurred has been forward in time (except in the Shangri La easter egg) and it has all been by accident, so travelling backwards in time may not be as simple as it sounds. Also I wonder what would happen when one of the characters meets himself at another time.
