@janellek21 sursromming was more rotten smelling and bad tasting but hakarl smelled more like urine and tasted like ammonia. both bad!! but hakarl was a little easier!

Thanks! It's kind of like fish maw which is dried fish stomach also used in soup. It's called "yue (fish) toe (stomach)" and it too needs to be soaked in water before adding to a soup like the hashima. It sounds gross but is really just textural, without any taste to it. :)

You might find salted fish called "haam you" in Cantonese if you go to a Taiwanese or Chinese specialty foodstuffs place. You could also try Chinese herbalist shops that sell dried seafoods, medicinal and dried herbs, teas, and other dried foods. If they don't, maybe they can direct you to some place where you live. If not let me know and maybe I can send you some. :)

I thought of a couple of questions since my first comment, Remi.

Did your dad taste Surstromming? And come to think of it, how did he

do on stinky tofu? One more, did your brother try either one?

Somebody suggested you try Indonesian shrimp paste....in some of my

family's Indonesian recipes dried shrimp paste was used as a flavoring, but

yes, it does smell rotten. You COULD try it, but again, it's never eaten alone,

only as a flavoring. It was sold under the name Trassie, brand name Conimex.

I'm glad now that I didn't try Surströmming when I was in Sweden. If you struggled to keep it down I'd have had no chance. The fish itself actually didn't look too bad, but the bubbling liquid surrounding it was quite disturbing. How did you get rid of the taste in the end?
