tralala3a, thanks for the compliment, but, no, I don't write poetry. Although I do have a way with words, some say. As a matter of fact I just jotted this translation down in 5 minutes, and it's not even complete. This is the second stanza, the one Nana speaks over:
For all non-Greeks who wonder what the heck these lyrics mean, the answer is quite straightforward: they mean absolutely nothing! It's just tongue-in-cheek playing with words, a series of innuendos designed to lead nowhere.
On Hymettus there is a secret, and it is -how shall I say this?- so very complicated, I admit. Even as a child, I had but one desire: to be friends with a star and keep a dog in my backyard, yet there on Mount Hymettus (you'll never make me think otherwise), there is a secret up there on Hymettus! A stone that rolled off: never hold on to it! Its fate is ominous and you'll regret it! Never forget this advice of mine, lest you lose all that you've got. Yet, there on Hymettus there is a secret!
We are fortunate to have this documented piece of Nana's musical career. According to her bio@ fanclub site, she was singing jazz and blues at a night club to help pay for her vocal studies in Athens; and this song writer found her was impressed and wrote many songs for her.( White Rose ) She made his name known world wide. If he regretted that, shame on him. She was not lucky, Blessed by God with a good work ethic and TALENT !!! Happy 75th Birthday Nana Oct 13, 2009 You deserve your rest!!
Ernesto de Lorenzo, Feliciano,Entre Ríos,Argentina: Thanks you so much for missboulay. When I was a child I heard this song in spanish here, my aunt sang it. Remembers of a past time, happy. Immortal time. Immortal songs. Never imagined to listen again this one. Greetings from Argentina. I am very happy to find this musical pearl.
manos hatjidakis=''ymitos'' ......over there in ymitos[the mountain upper and around athens] there is one secret .....and there is a more ,more complicated secret .i confess..and if eventhough from my youth wanted to have like company a star., a dog.........stone that rolled dont stop because is ''not sign of good luck''.....
Thank you for posting - when the BBC keep refusing to repeat Nana's early performances for her UK fans, it's great to be able to see some on You Tube.
Q: "Did you realize by then how important that contact was going to be, for both you and your singing?"
A: At that time, all I was thinking was that I would meet someone whom I never expected to show interest in my personality and singing skills. Indeed, luck has been by my side all through my life".
I dont know who she refers to, but the interviewer is George Papastefanou, a major radio and TV producer (about Nana's age) :)
In the interview, Nana was referring to Manos Hadjidakis, the brilliant composer of this and many other songs.
They met by chance, as she says, and her performance enriched the songs. Later on in life, Hadjidakis turned to what he called more "serious music", abandoning the pop field, and practially disowned this period of his life, these songs (he called them "trivial") and these performances.
First recorded in 1959.

Even in my youth, I did not much care for fondling.
I was cautious - in the evenings especially so!
Yet, up there on Hymettus there is a secret.
I cannot forget about it, nor can I untangle it.
