What engine you got there? it might have told if so i missed it thanks. nice bus by the way. I'm rebuilding a 79 westy, it was my first vehicle i've owned it since 1996 and its been in storage since 2001, i've finnally rounded up enough time, parts, and money to get her back on the road hopefully next month
Yo @freedomfighter790, Man I've lost track the number of times I've said 'hopefully' :( They put the bleedin' pyramids up quicker than this build dude! Just got the last prob to sort on the engine fuel injection system then 'HOPEFULLY' [ha, ha.....?]I can slot it back into the bus for the umpteenth time and get her on the road. It's a flat 6 by the way since u were asking 790.
Last of the Bay Westie's eh,...... cool! Out of interest what horses do these churn out bro?
Nice vid , good concept . What happened to 2008 - 2009 lmao ? Am considering buying a camper myself , thats why i am checking out vids on VW restorations . Better to bring 1 back from the dead rather than buy a minter yeah ,not sure what engine configuration to go with tho good mpg an reliabilty or fast an furious as you have , Good luck :)
Last few years have been really busy - all the detailing bits take like for ever man! I've put way more effort into this bus than I intended and missed the last few seasons because of it. It is finally coming together now though and next Spring is on [I think I've said this before somewhere??].
Re dead or mint; I'd always go with dead - when I bought this bus it just needed cremating!
You gotta make your own mind up; just remember - Don't be affraid!
Just uploaded an update vid, October 2010 even...how up to date is that! Btw, re your mpg ref, this engine although twice the size will prob be same mpg...and non-leaded as well, perhaps even a bit better with luck?
Nearly there as they say - but couldn't get it all together for this summer:( Deff on cards for Spring next year now but should be able to post the final instalment of the roof rack in a months time. So you should see circa 90% of the bus together by then dude. Sorry for late reply but I'm living in the garage these days! Watch out for next vid and drop me a line when viewed.
nice; I like the rust but my fj40 had a lot more, it's here at yt but not as nice a vid as this one :), can't wait to see this guy on the road so good luck with that !!!!
Yeah thx granskare, I'm getting her back from the paint shop soon, just a pitty I'll prob miss this summer on the roads. What's an fj40 by the way, you've got me on that one dude!
Oh and ta 4 subscribing, you'll get an update vid this autumn with some luck!
@mubbsi fj40 is a toyota land cruiser...mine is a 1978 model...I have fotos video here which shows it from being a rust bucket to a reasonable vehicle...I didn't use body parts, just bent metal...we painted it to look like a Finnish army vehicle to hide the imperfections - Rebuilding a Toyota Land Cruiser 78 FJ40 this is the name of the vid...I lost a lot of fotos when changing computers..mvh
Look after the old girl Nob, with a LOT of luck you won't need to do much work to enjoy her. I'm hoping to enjoy mine soon once I finally get her back from the spray shop; it's been 8 mths since dropping my bus off and is way way WAY overdue now :(
Nice but long! Hoping to finish late this summer 2010; before another season comes and goes! I will post a couple of vid's when this momentous event finally arrives.
Keep watching this space dude and let me know what you think.
@ discocreator76: i've been to your island some days ago. i didn't see english skandinavian or italian vans i proper condition there, but i saw lots of old german busses. open your eyes and think about that ;)
er,,,cheerz Steve I think? Would have replied earlier but just come back from a 2 month TV shoot for the new T6. It's the add where the bus totally wastes a Ferrari Enzo whilst racing through the treets of Stuttgard, sounds good to me anyway Dude!
until you own one, you never know how much they change your life!! we have a 76 bay, fully restored. we can go to ikea, go on holiday wherever and whenever, go out on the lash and not worry about getting a taxi, take stuff to the dump, fit the kids, shopping, dog and buggy in, go to fests, the list is endless, and they look so cool it's beyond coolness, it's aircooled lol!! we're off camping this week with the kids...again..and they love it, so many happy memories for them too!
Stay with it dude! It is so worth it. Had a 66 Kombi, miss her like crazy... Good work, like your custom design. If you need... it build it! Thanks for posting your progress. Enjoyed it much, will keep an eye on your video for further progress. VW vans rock!!!!!!
i'm scarede just looking at that dude i think my splitty would say to me " You are not puttin that .... in Me .... It wont fit" lol Good luck with it all dude , check out my camper vid man click on my username
It almost didn't fit Treg & has caused a FEW probs with available space - surprising what an angle grinder can create though :) You can view the engine in the Bay's bay [?] & running on vid 3; and I'm still adding stuff to it!!
Im a little concerned about it being air cooled....hope enough air can be gathered since its a back engined vehicle...how long have you been working on it? and could you tell me how much it will cost you when youre ready...cause im studying to be a technician and would like to renovate a car.....but short off money......gl to get it on the road .....should be great
Me 2 Vell, I've done mods to allow 4 this, including additional 911 oil cooler; M will b COOL! A 3 yr build up 2 now with approx 12mths to go, it's been hard graft & fun :) The bus didn't cost me much to buy but everything none VW has. I've part funded it by selling on the orig parts, and making most of the 'one off' bits myself.
If your heart shouts you want one then you will probably build one, your ability & the depth of your pockets will dictate how far u can go.
Wouldn't mind seeing that Z! I thought about a V12 but couldn't find an AIR COOLED. Didn't want any water; I'm an engineer not a plumber, besides the flat six suits the bus & this has already been one hell of a squeeze :(
Maybe a pair of flat sixes? Nah, I need space for the stove & sink!
My guy pal in College had one of these, we'd go to the beach on week end and it carried everything. We called it the "Guttless wonder". Good memories. My son is rebuilding a 1957 Buick Special 5 window coupe, she runs but still has a little heating problem. He'll get it. Then the body needs a bit of paint and then interior. He's had it since he was 16 now 27. He calls it his 'Baby'. Another Great Video!
Way cool! I'm in the process of gathering parts including the bus to start my bus project... I want a split samba with a RX7 engine in it. There is just some thing about the wine of a rotary engine. I have 2 questions though. One where did you end up stuffing the radiator in the bus? Second what is the name of the song at the end?
A rotary in a Dub will prob be a first Dude, though I've got my own thoughts on Wankels! Mubbsi ain't got a rad cos it's the last of the 911 air cooled's, I wanted it that way! Remember, back in the anals of time - Air came before Water :)
'Away From Here' is the track...Tops innit!
Good luck with the build & let us know when it hit tarmac.
Great video and project! Nice to see people with sense of humor. You need humor with that kind of long project :) I sold my bus last year, but this kind of project makes me want to buy an other one. Good luck for hybrid!
Nice input, thanx Maz. A good [warped?] sense of humor certainly helps, this bus has had me in stitches, they came out last week....honest! Go out and get that rusty old bus man - it will make sense ONE DAY? :)
Well spotted on the duvet Dawn - my bedrooms not as tidy as my garage :)
I'm sure it will be worth it though at the moment it's taking ages to get everything spot on, and it doesn't help with the price of Porsche parts either :(
Is there much more that you need to buy to get it on the road?. I know over here that Brazilian made VW parts are much cheaper if a little hard to source.
Yeah a fair bit but I can get VeeDub stuff readily here in the UK thanks. I've just finished getting the last of the Porsche bits I needed [instrumentation] so I can focus again on the re-build and fabrication of 'one-off' parts.
If i had one of these beatys, it wud have to be a pop up top 1975 or 1960 camper, with fold out bed, gas cooker, washin up bowl with runnin water, fold out table wud be klkl.
