  • Not to be a dick or anything...but all of the best violists are violinists.

  • @weenerwallet Not Yuri Bashmet. Best Violists in the world :).

  • To hear Bach "Arioso" on violin, type in pyo sinfonia.

  • 3rd movement

  • What movement is this?

  • i play viola and he has made want to play for hours

  • There needs to be more viola in the classical world. All you hear about is violin and cello soloists. The viola is such a beautiful instrument.

  • BRAVO!!!! Thank you.

  • If I want to find educated comments, I go to classical music videos. This is probably one of my favorite viola concertos of all time.

  • this is stunning !!

  • He's a good violinist and a good violist; there is no room for argument.

  • whoa, violist and comedian

    very talented

  • where did u get this clip and do u know where i can get the full entire version?

  • Those doublestops were intense.

  • Such an amazing and beautiful sound right from the very first note

  • Other than this there is no difference between Vengerovs' version and Pemroses version both are equal in quality and skill.

  • I listened to Willam Pemroses' recording of Walton's Viola Concerto as well as Maxim Vengerovs' version for comparison. The only difference between both Pemroses' version and Vengerovs' version is the dynamics of the mic. While both are recorded in a studio, the mic is set further back and away from Vengerovs' viola when he is recording, where as in Pemroses' recording the mic is on top of the viola picking up the deeper, lower tones making these tones more apparent in the recording...

  • Mr. Vengerov exerts the correct amount of bow pressure on the viola to produce the deep, warm, softy rich tonal quality that makes Walton Viola concerto a pleasure to listen too. Hats off to Maxim he nailed Walton's Viola Concerto with excellence, precision and an unparalleled expertise the first time-well done sir, well done.

  • My friend the violist said to me to think of a viola as a baritone or bass voice

range. He went on to say that even though both bass and baritone are the lowest of the voice ranges with their deep, rich tonal qualities there are still the warm underlying mid register tones and the lite, sweet head register tones which when blended can provide the richest, warmest, most beautiful tonal quality on the planet..

    to be continued...

  • My friend the violist who performs with an orchestra on a regular basis also explained to me that a viola is like a singers' voice. The chest register should be deep, rich, warm but still possess mid-register and a light very faint head register within the low range of the tonal quality. My friend the violist went on to say that if all there is, is only chest register within the viola then this is not good because there is no underlying and overlaying color tones to the voice quality.

  • Currently, I'm studying violin and Mr. Vengerovs' bowing technique on the viola in this video clip is just how a viola should be played. I have a friend who plays viola in an orchestra and he is an incredible violist who told me that whether you play a violin or viola your bowing technique should never be heavy handed by placing too much pressure on the viola with the bow.

    To be continued...

  • which movement is this?

  • @txtmsg4 Movt III Allegro Moderato.

  • Hey guys hope you like the Delius Viola Sonata on my Channel. Thanks.

  • This guy looks like he is having an orgasm while playing the viola.

  • Wonderful!

  • Wonderful!

  • what movement is this?!?!

  • what happend to the rest of the movement much less the rest of the piece!? :(

  • Which viola is that? is it the "Archinto" strad?

  • oh god! a wonderful voice coming out of maxims viola.....

  • he closes his eyes a lot when he plays. lol he's so good he doesn't even have to look! XD

  • @catiebear35 you're supposed to rely on your ears, not your eyes

  • too buff to be playing a violin, he should keep playing the viola, it fits him bettar. :D

  • Omg - When you are brought to tears you know you've spent way too many years away from your instrument.... I miss my viola so much and playing with my friends... :-( .....Good thing college starts monday!

  • Hi.

And who are you to judge Maxim Vengerov may I ask? Can you please post up a video of yourself playing the viola the way it should be played? I find it really pathetic when mediocrities like yourself post condescending messages about people who actually have real talent and ability.

Save your mentor tone for "learn to play viola" forums.

  • I don't know this concerto that well, so which movement is this?

  • I am trying to find my instrument, I like the chello but I also like the viola, I fell like I am more into drama themes, and sad things because I feel like I can express more deeply with something like that. I dont like speedy things like paganini, I am a bach chello suite no.1 prelude fan, please somebody help me

  • @9kevin If you are this confused, let me reassure you. The viola is definitely the instrument for you.

  • @9kevin After posting my last comment I saw a bit of one of your videos. If that is you playing the guitar, you should not waste your time playing the viola. You have too much talent, it would be a waste. Try the violin instead, or the Cello or even the Double Bass. The viola is for lifeless losers, like myself.

  • @mrwasbesonders thanksssss !!!! I decided to go with the one that always had fascinated me, the cello.

Saludos!!! :-D

  • I love the passion he plays with.

  • is this the original 1929 orchestration or the revised version?

  • let's say that violin is propedeutical to viola. a good violinist will not always be a good violist. But let's stop saying that a violinist cannot play viola never ever. This is, in my opinion, envy

  • @minimalisminmusic I agree. And without mentioning any names, there are some pretty arrogant violists out there who play like pigs and then have the nerve to criticise great violinists such as Maxim Vengerov and Nigel Kennedy when they play the viola to a phenomenal level that these plebs couldn't achieve in a million light years!Equally annoying are violinists who constantly have digs at violists and constantly make viola jokes when they can't play the violin for shit.

  • @mrwasbesonders one of them being

    Definition:

    Clef

something to jump off of before a viola solo

  • I sincerely think that's very hypocrite to see Vengerov and say "whoa, a fuckin' violinist playing a viola, how arrogant, he's got no viola sound, no passion, no viola spirit". bullshit! if there were only the audio without the name of the perfomers, you all would say "wonderful, who's this great violist?".

in my opinion, it's true that viola and violin are completely different instruments, but if you study technique very well on violin, then you'll play more easily the viola. (continue)

  • The theatrics are distracting, and he seems to be into them before he has even playled a note. Better to listen to this performance than watch it.

  • Vengeroc choose one of the most beautiful pieces of Waltons "masterpiece".

Still William Primrose plays this piece better! And the whole musical pice too of course! Please!

Please! Please! Please! Look William Primrose up! Especially plaing Waltons Viola Concerto!!

  • The viola's sound requires more *weight not pressure... more pressure would give the music a more strained, tense sound! be careful about pressing into the string as opposed to using good arm weight... this recording is amazing! he is doing it wonderfully

  • @ViolistMourlam Thank you for that explanation. I just bought my first viola, so small tips when I get started are valuable.

Bowed string players seem to always make those faces when they play. I wonder if I'll look like that after a few years.

  • @ViolistMourlam You sound like Mr. Goins! haha. You are 100% right cuz I am learning this piece and it is something I am always worrying about

  • This is not "Viola-playing". Sounds ok, but is not true to the instrument.

For comparaison look for the "Grandmaster" perfoming this!

    William Primrose

  • When Vengerov makes love he must turn off the lights!

Who would stand his "monkey faces" at such delicate moments ;-)

  • He plays beautifully but his faces are really distracting lol

  • This guy looks like too much of a thug to be a violinist. He should confine himself

    to viola.

  • Walton viola concerto 3ºmov. muito bom!!!

  • Oh God....I think I just saw his sex face

  • This guy looks too tough to be playing a violin in the first place.

  • I am also a viola player but I would never dare critisize Vengerov ! !

  • It's Sir William Walton's viola concerto.

  • any1 have the whole video?

  • beautiful. i like this very very much.

  • I really love Mozart for he to played the Viola and he played it quite well actually. In fact, he composed many Viola solos which are just beautiful if you can get your hands on them and are talented enough to play them.

  • im jealus of his 4th finger vib. :p out of all the recording i have heard though, that double stop part is the best i have heard.

  • @mjp13rockon Yes, after all my years of playing, I still can't get the hang of the 4th finger vibrato.

  • looks like hes taking a dump. and this looks like a fun piece to play, any1 know what it is?

  • @DJNotNais

My, don't you have a way with words!

  • anyone know what it is called the song that's playing maxim? please tell me!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • He reminds me of an Italian comedian. It helps me remember to stop wagging my tail and licking my nose while playing.

  • @CineMutt

so you do have a tail? It is complete intolerable that they exploit animals that way to make zoos more profitable.

  • @assa123assa123 What the fuck are you even talking about? Save your nut case opinions for somewhere else it's wasteing space in this comments section.

  • of course thats the only thing u fricken payed attention to

  • haha he makes funny faces but he plays good....FUNY FACES

  • lol very wonderfully played!

  • I know violinists who overly press their strings and use so much bow pressure and yet they make the most lovely violin sound. OTOH, i know violists with weak fingers/arms and make a lush+powerful C string. IMO there is nothing Vengerov could do to make himself better. Viola+violin are two different instruments. It's up to the player to determine which sound he/she likes.

  • I agree with the people, more pressure+more arm on bow, etc etc but a player of Vengerov's stature could easily do this. He makes the concerto sound the way it sounds because of his tastes and nothing else.

  • To be honest viola being played like a violin sounds better than viola being played like a viola.

All this stuff about needing to press harder is bullshit. The string vibrations which get amplified by the bridge, soundpost and bass bar are the side to side vibrations, not the up and down ones. When you press down hard you're basically restricting the side to side vibrations, killing projection (this is with any string instrument).

Stop acting like pressing harder is some secret viola technique

  • @vyvyanos he doesn't speak for all violas, whoever he was, and you also can't assume your way is better. there is no definitive style for instruments, whatever works for you works

  • He looks like he is trying to take a poo.

  • I wouldn't be able to tell the difference if i didn't know it was vengerov and besides alot of violists wouldn't be able match vengerov in power, or expression no matter higher or lower end.

  • He plays violin better than viola.

  • The movement and facial expressions are interesting. They definitely don't take away from the sound, and his demonstration of the instruments depth and range gives a great meaning to this piece that few can appreciate. I applaud Mr. Vengerov!

  • во он корчится!фу...смотреть противно.........бееееееееееееееееееееееее,фууууууууууууууууууууууууууууууу.........точно родит кого-нибудь.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • He plays the viola like a violin a but too much.

  • he looks like the original yellow wiggle.

  • To those who think Maxim''s playing this piece with great emotion or passion, viola definitely has more deep, darker sound compare to the sound of violin. Viola needs to be played with much more pressure in the bow. What I just saw is that Vengerov is playing a viola like a violin. Playing a viola is certainly differ from how you play a violin. So personally I think Vengerov should go learn from Primrose first and than play the piece again.

  • viola elitism talking here....

  • @cleansky10 Very good observation !

  • Violists definitely use a different combination of bow speed and pressure to draw out the lower overtones, a fact which escapes most violinists.

  • @cleansky10 you have all reason xD haha greatting from El Salvador

  • @cleansky10 he is not playing viola like violin otherwise it would sound like shit and it doesn t

  • @milstein91 I agree. If he were his bow would be more than a few millimeters behind the bridge for starters!

  • @cleansky10

By the way when you are 18 and only learning how to play viola, please do not criticize one of the greatest musicians of the 21st century.

  • @cleansky10 Well, if you are that smart and if you know to play viola better than Vengerov, then show us, instead of anonymous criticizing.

  • @cleansky10 "What is the answer to this dilimma?" - Dalton "Perhaps shoot all violinists who play viola publicily." - Primrose

  • @cleansky10 I am very curious to know in what way you believe him to be playing the violin like a violin? I am primarily a violinist, so, I ask sincerely. When I DO play viola I don't change so much. What should change? You say it needs "much more pressure in the bow, " but how does that translate in terms of technique? Higher arm? Lower elbow? What do you mean exactly?

  • @violinimprovmama a viola will still sound fine played as a violin, but in order for it to achieve the full sound and tone, it needs more pressure. especially on the really deep low c string notes. i play with my arm a little higher than i would playing a violin

  • @txtmsg4 That's is about what I thought... Although I tend to play with my upper arm higher than many violinists do. Many play with a droopy elbow. One of my violist friends told me that she plays with her arm LOWER in order to get out the full sound, and that did not make any sense to me. Thanks!

  • guys it's a freaking recording either way. Why the fck would it matter if he was dancing everywhere?

seriously please think before you post.

  • AWESOME

  • may i just make a point that he is not faking his emotion, that is pure passion in his playing. Only a musician would understand. He is one of the best violinists in the world so to say he is bad? well i think its a very silly comment

  • he may be one of the worlds best violinists, but he's playing a viola...

  • hfm&co.

  • he makes me sick

  • go fuck yourself, dickface

  • Oh, I adore him.

  • amen to that. :D

  • que putas cara smas d ela verga hace ese pendejo

  • The majority of the time you will hear the comment "plays viola like a violin" comes from two points. #1. many times violinists do not sink the arm into the string enough on viola, they tend to play "on" rather than "into" tha string. #2. The vibrato,.they tend not to use the pad of the finger, indeed, viola playing requires a slightly flatter finger to get more "pad" on the string. This produces the fatter, fuller vibrato the instrument wants. But, I will say that Mr Vengerov is very accurate.

  • It was so beautiful I shed a single tear.

  • yeah.. i play the viola and i am saying this from experience. he is really doing to much... AND he sounds like a violin... it just takes all of the beauty out of the purpose and character of the viola, its richness, and it's uniqueness. it makes me very sad... never watching this guy again. |l3

  • ヴィオラコンチェルトってあまりないので、こんな美しい曲に出会えて光栄です。

    ヴィオラだって、主役になれるんですよね!

  • go suck a cock bicth

  • go fuck yourself, dickface. i bet you can't even play half as good as Vengerov, so Fuck you.

  • i dont. but i actually believe that there is more to art than emotion, and dancing all over the place.

  • mashatonder, i think you should listen him more carefully. It must be like that. So he is playing like that. havin spent ten years of my life.(viola)

Fingerhorn4, exactly ! It is the answer !

  • i play the viola first i played the violin but i swiched to the viola

  • I agree and dissagree with both of you.He is a very good musician, very expresive too,but his sound is not as charming as it can be on the viola. And the biggest diffrence between the violin and viola is in the sound!!!It's insoliting to say that the viola is played by introverts-not thrue.

  • i can lizen to this 100 times without get boared. hes so amasing and passioned

  • Violabrain is right the viola does require a different way of playing. Im a violist myself and know this for a fact, you should either play violin or viola not both...also never take viola lessons by a violinist, because you will learn to play the viola like a violin

  • Viola requires a different way of playing. Violinists TEND TO play viola like a violin, producing a wispy sound without a core. This obvious on the lower strings in particular. Viola requires more pressure with both the right and left hand. The size of the viola also requires a compromise of posture and comfort. Violists find it annoying that violinists with successful careers take opportunities from potential viola soloists. "Moonlight violists" William Primrose called them.

  • Hi Violabrain, I appreciate the points you make but what might be happening here (in this case) is pure resentment that a perceived established violin player is "invading" the space of the viola playing fraternity. The point is, you might have views on Vengerov in general, but if you close your eyes and listen, he plays the viola as well as (and possibly better) than others who jealously guard their viola patch. Some of the anti Vengeroc/viola comments appear as loittle more than sour grapes!

  • It's not totally pleasing to listen to in my opinion. I feel like there isn't core to the sound except on the higher strings. That's the impression that I get from this clip anyway. In that way this recording isn't pleasing to my ears. My evaluation may be more stringent because of being a violist. Pinky.Z plays viola well. He produces an even sound (I saw him live with the C[hicago]SO) that doesn't sound hollow on the C and G strings. It may also just be the instrument.

  • @violabrain

oh yeah, viola players are the best players of all players (even football)

and they don't know what it is to be snobbish and jealous. they just think they're much higher than that.

  • @assa123assa123 No one said said that violists are the best players (of what I don't know), whatever that means. I only mentioned basic information that's in any viola pedagogy book in sections for violinists switching to viola. I don't even know what I originally commented on but it it was probably about the differences between violin and viola technique. I really don't care any more.

  • @violabrain while i do agree with you completely i still think vengerov is a quite able viola player as well as a violinist

  • @violabrain ur just mad because a violinist like maxim can play viola better than most pro viola players and record albums... obviously what u say about violinsts playing viola like a violin only applies to amateur violin players but not a pro like vengerov.

  • @violabrain The music world is riddled with musicians branching out and trying new things. Fortunately for the already successful ones, they need not reclaim their notoriety when they adopt a new instrument. And while this may beat out a potential player, it is the same as a more famous violinist beating out a less famous one. I say, though, if a violinist wants to play the viola; let them. The same goes for violists who wish to pick up the violin. We should not be forced into one instrument.

  • @violabrain I agree with you 100% Every violinist believes that he can play the viola. The viola is not a third violin, it is a different instrument with a different repertoire and different technique.

  • @ondaslokas Every violinist! You have made an obviously exhaustive survey to have asked them all! Well done.

  • Comment removed

  • @violabrain firstly - Vengerov plays viola not first, so he knows what he does...

Secondly - for that recording he received Grammy...

Thirdly - if you'll turn your head away, you'll see amazing picture and understand, this is nenecessary sound !

P.S. At first i didn't like this video.... But now i think this is best performance Walton's concert...

  • @violabrain ikr me being 1 out of 2 violas in my orchestra it annoys me when the violins say the viola is easy its not!

  • @violabrain

    Hi.

  • omg dude, listen his walton concerto entirely, how he tries to pull off fortissimos with brutal strength of the bow, playing three strings at once that are NOT in the music just because he plays viola like a barbarian, viola techinque needs a lot more than EMOTIONS, maybe you couldnt understand what viola is about, but dont come to youtube to show your ignorance: "The viola doesn't confer a special technique...it's just a larger violin."

    ...

  • Hi Xujam, having spent 25 years of my life as an orchestral arranger and conductor I assure you I do understand what a viola is! Vengerov won a grammy for the Walton piece. It's all a matter of opinion and yes he does play the viola with a lot of energy, and perhaps not to everyone's taste, but to imply he is not qualified to play it is nonsense. I personally like the fact that he's made a change from the traditional view of the viola as a shy, retiring instrument played by introverts.

  • maxim should stick to violin he plays the viola lie a violin

  • Yes. Yes you are.

  • ew. he should stick to violin. and he has no control over his emotions, and it shows in his playing

  • I think Maxim needs to adjust his shoulder rest to be a tad higher, his posture is bad :)

  • Great tone and performance!

  • No doubt Vengerov's rendition of the Walton has garnered a great amount of controversy, but I can assure you that (while I don't think it's the best) it's surely NOT the worst and not as horrible as it's made out to be.

Ever heard of Nigel Kennedy? His is worse.

  • master~

  • WHY oh WHY did he do this to himself!!!???...ugh...

  • Hes awesome in both violin and viola

  • GReat GReat performances!!

  • Great GReat perfomances

  • I'd guess just about the same.

  • your one funny guy :D

  • Imagine...

  • D-:

Well I know that I've certainly subscribed...

  • I wish I could show the same facial expressions/emotions as him when I play!

  • Does he really live his music or is he a good actor ? Or maybe both on same time ? :D anyway wonderful violist !

  • he lives it...ever since he started playing, thats what makes him so amazing...watch him when he was younger

  • When you're THAT good...

  • @Giillloooouuuuu A lot of us Violists, and even other stringed instrument players, get into the music. It really depends on the piece and how much you actually love/enjoy playing. Something that is upbeat I tend to bounce in my seat and smile, whereas something like Adagio I sway to the music and close my eyes like him. If you love playing you really get into it. I know I do.

  • i'm a high school violist and mine is 16 inches, and yes, i move alot when i play too, its a sign that one is musical and can feel the music...don't critisize it.

  • Why do people always complain when someone gets really into playing...If he feels that shit deep down inside the last thing he should do is stay still and look like a robot.

  • looks like hes really feeling the music :) great peice.great music!

  • what movement is this from?

  • It's from the last movement of the Concerto

  • he moves too much.

  • yeaa...about tht..i cant playy my viola half as gudd as this guyy can...well done!! BRAVOO

  • perfect.............!!!!!!

  • I'm very immpresed by him... he's great.

  • it's good to express yourself, and his playing is beautiful.

  • impressive, good work mr. twitchy :D

  • all is very well and maim vergerov is an exelent musician but is necesary all that show with his face coud sond same without that but viola power like scarfacerank1

  • wow thats amazing good tone :)

  • Viola Power!

  • For some reason I actually like Vengerov's walton better than Yuri Bashmet's
