Language is not restricted to any religion. Why can't a muslim say assalamo alikum to a hindu, and why can't a sikh say sat sri akal to a muslim ?
Do you have to know religion of the other person to greet him / her?
So your first question will be "Which religion do you belong to?" and then you say "hello ji" if that person is not a muslim.
Let the language be free from religious prejudice.

@chanabnagar Assalamu'alaykum is not an Urdu greeting: it is an Islamic greeting. and it does not really mean 'hello'.It's like saying let the hindu temples, the sikh temples, the synagogues, churches, etc. be free from religious prejudice.

@bawain, Urdu is from Arabic, Persian Turkic etc. urdu also influence other south asian languages like hindi.
sabah-bakhair & shab-bakhair are valid urdu words.
Sabah = morning , ba = with , khair = good, blessing etc.
Shab=evening/night , ba=with, khair= good, blessing etc.

I disagree that in urdu there is no greatings with repect to the time of the day.
Infact In urdu, we also use "sube-ba-khail" which means good morning. In urdu we also use "Shab-ba-khail" which means good night.

Urdu, Hindi/Pubjab are all very similar -- especially Urdu and Hindi.
The reason why he is mentioning Hindi and Pubjabi is because they are all intertwined very closely.
