How did this get to auction? Musician Carl Pagter presented the Vega extended-neck banjo to the International Bluegrass Museum in Owensboro KY.Pagter said Seeger donated the banjo to “Sing Out!” magazine for a subscription drive in the 1970s. Old-time musician Rick Abrams raised the most money and it was sent to him. When Abrams, leader of the California-based Piney Creek Weasels, died of melanoma at age 47 in 1997, Pagter, a close friend, bought the Seeger banjo from Abrams’ widow.
but i have looked up to him and jon eric and mike gregory for years now. and i am going to make a banjo this weekend a pete seeger style, steampunk fashion, and i will learn to play better and get lessons in hopes to become as good if not better then these 3 men :)
@jamie69247 Pete plays a 5-string. His banjo is like a regular banjo, which a standard banjo has 22 frets, his has 3 extra, which allows him to do deeper than standard G tuning, such as keys of open E, F and F#.
The irony is, National Treasures like Pete Seeger who have a message of love caring, compassion, generousity, and patriotism, are ignored by the "National Media Cartel", while National Blights and scurges from greedy corporate felons, corrupt politicians, perverted proselytizing preachers, sleezy sports figures and others get national exposure daily!
I am so glad Pete discontinued the auction and donated the banjo head to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Either there or the Smithsonian. It DOES NOT belong in a private collection that might garner more money for just one collector. Someday I hope to make it to Cleveland and see it again.....
The banjo just doesn't look the same without that grungy old head, but things have to change, sometimes for the better. I thought Pete liked the Waverly Fyberskin heads. Now it looks like he's got a Stew-Mac 5 Star on there. Stew-Mac will be ballyhooing this forever. He'll find this head produces a lot more volume than the Fyberskin. Wonder how it will affect the tone?
Pete, this is a beautiful piece of history, with the quote that echos Woody's famous guitar ("This machine kills fascists"). Truly priceless, and I hope it fetches lots at auction for Haiti.
Long may you strum your banjo! Peace, from Canada.

Great music and gift from Pete.
There are about 50 MILLION abortions every year worldwide. I hope Pete lifts up his voice to stop the slaughter of innocent human life. Some of the babies are 6 months old. Some are 8 months old and some are 4 and 5 months old. Mother Teresa said the fruit of abortion is nuclear war.
Nice to plant trees and clean the Hudson, but we better stop the killing of the innocent. The wholesale slaughter of 1 Billion babies every 20 yrs. We shall overcome...

Pete's banjo head should have stayed on his banjo and displayed in the Smithsonian Institute. A neat decorated folk instrument.
