  • The Prince of Tenors, wie Pavarotti sagte ! Schade, dass Ich ihn nie live hören werde, ich würde sehr viel dafür geben !

  • Some singers...and really only a handful...have it all. Corelli was #1 in that category.

  • @Operanobility I wouldn't go that far, there is a lot he didn't have in his voice. Powerful pipes but admittedly he could never sing with beauty as Gigli for example. This was a poor performance.

  • @crapfacejoe Did you ever hear him live? I did. And I stand by what I said.

  • @Operanobility He obviously doesn't agree with you. When asked what he regrets or would change, he said I'd try to sing with beauty like Gigli. The interview is posted on youtube if you look for it. And you cannot say this is a great performance not if you've listened to some other great tenors perform it.

  • @crapfacejoe On the contrary, this is definitely a great perfomance. A legend. From all aspects. Beauty is subjective, many would say Corelli had not only a strong but a beautiful voice.

  • @tehen162 It can also be a technical term when describing operatic styles. That's what Corelli meant when he said if there is anything he could change it would be to sing with more beauty and sweetness like Gigli.

  • @crapfacejoe Del Monaco's and Lanza's E lucevan le stelle is far better than this.

  • @crapfacejoe Beauty and sweetness are no way technical terms. Corelli was a very polite man, who respected the great singers like Gigli, that's all. I don't think Del Monaco's or Lanza's renditions were better than this, opinions differ.

  • @tehen162 The question to Corelli was not what he thought of Gigli, but what he regretted about his career and what he would change if he could go back. The answer was to sing with more beauty and sweetness like Gigli.

  • By Far the original Tenor Of tenors!!!!!!

  • In our lives, there are rarely any moments of true perfection and the chances of that being RECORDED are even smaller...but it's not impossible.

For here's a prime example. It is possible.

  • Franco Corelli, dans toute sa splendeur !!!

    Merci pour le post .

  • amazing breath at discliogliera dai veli, amazing endind too bravoooooooooooooo

Grazie a You tube e a coloro che caricano queste pagine d'arte immortali.

  • Outstanding!

  • He is the king of volume. Loudest tennor that ever lived, but also a natural tenor, and he proves it when he gives such perfect dimiueto's like that one. From full belt to soft head voice at that note, you try it.

  • Once you have heard this version, you never forget it. And you are never satisfied when you hear other versions.

  • He just got better with time, amazing performance!

  • this is the best version of this aria. End off.

  • Corelli was a god! Now he sings at the heavens! Bravissimo!

  • Sublime Franco Corelli Grazie!

  • imagine being in the audience that night !! how could you go on after that..!!??

  • none better ever

  • SUBLIME !!!

    LA PERFEZIONE ASSOLUTA.

GRAZIE CORELLI PER TUTTE LE MERAVIGLIOSE EMOZIONI CHE CI HAI REGALATO IN TANTI ANNI : NON TI DIMENTICHEREMO MAI !!!

    GRAZIE !

  • Corelli would probably be my favorite opera performer on stage, but I like the gold standard of this aria done in 1904 by none other than Puccini's tenor, Enrico Caruso. No opera singer bared his soul better. I'm sure Caruso's version was the inspiration for all great tenors who did this aria with intense emotion. I also prefer a couple versions done by Bjorling. Unlike his earlier recordings, he put more emotion into this aria at the Met in 1959, a year before his heart gave out.

Franco Corelli é Mario Cavaradossi in persona.

  • He gave 170% percent at this performance. 22 SECOND DIMINUENDO, come on!!!

  • Eccezionale!!!un'interpretazione leggendaria...grandissimo Franco

  • Corelli IS Caravadossi. period.

  • i like it

    thank you

  • Corelli is obviously amongst the very greats, but you can't forget Bjorling, Caruso, Tucker, di Stefano and of course Pavarotti.

  • Stunning!

  • ¡¡¡ BRAVO!!!

  • the murmur of the crowd at 2:13 says it all. I've never heard breath support like that.

  • THAT is just amazing!!!

  • meraviglioso !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The breath control!!! The diminuendi!! Heroic voice and amazing high notes, even with such a big sound.

  • Does anybody know who were portraying Tosca and Scarpia in this performance please?

  • @Aetion Virginia Gordoni was Tosca, and Attilio D'Orazi was Scarpia.

  • @racheleleeba

    Thank you very much.

  • Corelli is the boss!!!!

  • yes.

And I know what God-indulgence means:

    Corelli.

    C'mon dude. This is unhuman.

  • contatolirico,

This IS indeed amazing, Corelli at his best!

    Many thanks!

  • o dolci baccio languide carezze jesus this phrase is just DONT end

i mean how he could held his breath that long

  • jacksvoice: No body, but nobody could top Corelli singing this aria or for that matter all of Tosca. If he was showing off or self indulgence as your remark states,it was the greatest piece i have heard. No tenor past or present could top it.

  • Perfect technique, but the way Corelli emotes in this performance...it's beyond words. Through his incredible, perhaps unmatched vocal prowess, so much humanity is revealed. Just awesome.

  • secondo me Corelli, nell uso della voce, aveva intuito qualcosa di particolare......fantastico

  • Absolutamente imprescindible.

    Talento,potencia y sensibilidad.

  • che sentimento, che tecnica, che voce, che fiati.......FRANCO RIESCI A LASCIARMI SENZA PAROLE OGNI VOLTA.....

  • @jacksvoice

Don't look at it like that. Probalby that audience has heard Tosca, many, many times before. They know the story in and out. So... they are not necessarily there only for the drama, they're there for the singing too.

But Corelli, and you missed this, lost himself in those long held notes whenever he pulled them off, they became showstoppers, prolonging and concentrating the emotion.

He wasn't a cheap show off at all.

Thus, I find your comment unfair.

  • @fabrizzzio48

I'm pleased you enjoyed it but I stand by my comment.

  • @jacksvoice

    By all means.

Your comment reports on your experience, your impression and opinion. Of course you stand by it. I am not to bother you on that.

But, Corelli was not a show off. He was an honest singer. A man who worked very hard to give his very best on stage. He felt a real responsibility towards his audience, and gave a lot of passion and real feeling when performing.

One should not judge by one's impression of one performance, a man like Coreelli, it's unfair.

    That's all.

  • Comment removed

  • It is the best! It couldn't be better than this!! Absolutely amazing!

  • His breathing was out of this world, not to mention his voice itself. Stunning

  • I have listened to this recording countless times, and each time I return to it I am in awe of the emotion, brilliance, and control of this beautiful instrument.

The woman yelling "Bravo!" as Corelli finishes seals the deal.

  • @Jozh487 I cannot agree more with you, to my taste, Corelli was the best Mario and the best Calaf. He was such a talent artirt. On stage he was a god

  • Corelli is the KING!!

  • When the thought lost .... and there is no word which worthy to touch this interpretation ..... Shocking !!!!!!!

    Thank You Very Much

    Simos

  • Meraviglioso indeed. Bravissimo Corelli !

  • Best tenor I ever heard

  • Sublime Grazie

  • Meraviglioso !

  • The greatest - there were & are "decent" other tenors, but NO ONE can approach the excitement & magnificence that this man produced.

  • Amen to that!

  • Certainly Corelli took heed of the performances of a number of singers he admired singing specific pieces, and copied phrasing he found particularly effective as he chose. Why not? It is not a bad thing at all. Happens with singers all the time. But, Corelli then made it his own, as all the great ones do.

  • Chills up and down my spine. Thanks for the post.

  • I didn't insult anyone, I just thought it was funny.

  • raigekimaru, please accept my apology. I had no right to tell you to go F Yourself. That was childish and silly on my part and I clearly overreacted.

  • Corelli is the best lyrical tenor of all time. He sings with so much passion it makes me want to cry every time I listen to him. He knows how to excite you, yet frighten you at the same time. It's hard to explain..... Carreras is a close runner up but Corelli is the man! Listen to the way he takes his voice from full blown to falsetto... Amazing natural skills!!

  • I agree, except that Corelli was not a lyrical tenor. He was spinto/drammatic.

  • I know, I'm being corrected left and right about Corelli Being a Spinto and not a lyrical tenor. Thanks for the correction.

He's still my favorite tenor and the best ever!

  • roflol; saying Corelli was a lyric tenor is like saying Sara Brightman is a dramatic soprano.

PS: he never uses falsetto, there's a section of really light head voice, but opera singers almost never use falsetto, it makes you sound like an adolescent. anyway, you're right though, he's got SKILLZ! ;P

Buon ascolto !!!

  • One shouldnt overlook a serious matter. A hearing 30 different tenor doesnt necessarily mean anything. You can hear the same tenor singing the same aria 30 times and no one of them will be the same as the other. Corellis rendition of this aria in Parma is generally accepted as HIS best ever.

  • This answers the question as to why I no longer waste my time attending live performances! Where/When will ever hear a voice such as this again??? The man was THE greatest & no one can shine his shoes!

  • Don P . I say you are 100% correct. There was not a Tenor who sang this aria better. Corelli was the Quintessential Tenor all the rest could hope and dream but Corelli was the Best.

  • In so many operas, maestro Franco Corelli set the standard against which all subsequent tenors will be measured...they will fail miserably, for no one will even come within a mile of his Calaf, Manrico, Chenier, Johnson, Poliuto, Cavaradossi, etc., etc.

  • I do not think it is possible to say there is a greatest tenor, baritone, bass, mezzo or soprano; just whether a particular singer's version is best--and that is subjective enough--look-if opera is also drama and not just a singing contest in costume you would have to consider the dramaturgic or comedic context of the partcular aria.

  • Thats by far the best rendition of this wonderful aria Ive ever heard.

    Thanks for posting.

  • hey~ what do you mean? he own this aria and his frame is little bit long but, it just amazing. no one can sing like him specilly this aria

  • I was actually referring to his holding certain notes too long. So long that they go far beyond good taste. I have heard better interpretations.

  • And, please, note that the fact that you "own" this aria (funny, not?) is no particular argument for the interpretation being good.

  • I agree with you; he too often holds notes, one and soon after the other in a sequence with a costant long lenght of the phrase, taking this great aria almost into the ridiculous. Holding a note could be amazingbut modulating the voice on one point you choose to put the lyrical intensity on, not continually and in according to the time. The sensitiveness of the time is fundamental. Which rendition of this aria do you suggest? Saluti.

  • wow, you know there are a few tenors whom i would say are superior, but none move me the way corelli does. for me, none approaches his ability to convey emotion in his singing. this is a great one, thanks

  • Unbelieveable. I must have heard different tenors singing this for the last ten years but after hearing Franco Corelli singing this...it's like hearing it for the first time...even the crowd couldn't contain themselves....

  • Ti emoziona tanto !!!!

  • I have but one qualm with this recording - it spoils all other recordings of this aria for me. When he takes the high A at 1:56 forte then goes into a pianissimo that lingers on forever - I mean come on! No other tenor seems to be able to do this like Corelli (he does the same trick at the end of Celeste Aida). All this plus the looks of a matinee idol - God just seems to give some people everything!

  • This is unreal!

  • GODLIKE!!!

  • He was the King! What else...

  • Of course it's ... amazing, but Joseph Schmidt was amazing too when he sung that ...

  • Corelli is amazing and unique, but my old Maestro told me he imitated the Miguel Fleta lucevan le stelle.. and i's true, also Fleta did this beautiful filato. But Corelli is the best of ever!

  • I know everyone always talks about the incredible Vittoria in this recording, but this is the MOST incredible part of his performance, AND an almost 2 1/2 minute ovation following this, that goes into the next part when Tosca is singing. I hate when people say "There will never be another (Fill in yourfavorite singer)," But come on...Corelli is just.... one of a kind.

  • An absolute god. This is amazing.

  • No tengo palabras...

    Maravilloso...!!

  • Its Unbelievable....it just bring tears to my eyes everytime I listened to it...how could everyone not love such an amazing artist?....singing with such passion, heart...its really moving....MAESTRO CORELLI IL PIU GRANDE!!! la tua voce splenderá per sempre!!! GRAZIE MAESTRO for being such an inspiration.

  • i am just shocked..

the control that he has, power and softness - he feels it.

    just perfect

  • This is why everyone loved Corelli...he was just as good, many times better (like in this case), in live performances than in the recording studio.

  • It's amazing to hear that big voice bring a B flat to a pianissimo (who could do that nowadays?) that everyone could hear and hold on to it...and then hit it right on full voiced and gloriously thrilling. And that wasn't the knobs on a recording studio, that was live in the Lion's Den.

  • it was an A, but actually A is a more challenging note to diminish! it is closer to the passaggio in between chest and head tone, and therefore it is EXTREMELY difficult to maintain an even quality of voice in this part of the range.

but you are right about everything else! corelli was the king!

  • No Tenor past or present has ever sang that aria like Corelli. This is a live recording.Amazing the control and softness of the notes, then that thunderes power in one breath.Unbeliveable,Bravo, Corelli

  • I agree, this performance is brilliant. But Di Stefano was superb too.

  • I agree di Stefano's was breathtaking as well. But Cavaradossi is supposed to be a spinto tenor, di Stefano has beauty and passion, but Corelli has beauty, passion AND POWER.

  • True !

  • Bellísimo.

  • goose bumps all the way! Unbelievable singing...

  • OH MY GOD....I am struck...

  • Spectacular! Just a different class. Unbelievable to think this is a live recording. The sheer power of the voice is astounding, never mind the complete control he has of it. 157 to 215 is heavenly!!!!!

  • The phrase 1:54 - 2:17 is maybe the best phrase ever sung by anyone live. It's so amazing...

  • Lettis79...I agree completely with your comment, ive never heard that passage sung better....its fantastic.

  • Strong, sentimental and delicate performance. Excellent !!

  • Corelli is one of my faves no doubt and he owed this song right here.

  • edit: he owNed this song

  • bravisimo corelli

  • This in my opinion defines what a true tenor is! Bravo maestro Corelli!

  • How many Tosca's I've seen, including Domingo and Pav. But I really believe this is the definiteve tenor performance!

  • It really is amazing...

  • Wow...this one is indeed amazing...the diminuendo..and the constant voice he produced from 1:57- 2:18 demands a great breath control... Bravo Corelli! His pupil, Bocelli is also good.

  • The diminuendo spanning form 1:57- 2:18 is miraculous. Corelli was without a doubt one of the great tenors of all time.

  • I am surprised of how much Corelli HATERS listen to his music. Can somebody help me in identifying what tipe of mental disfunction is this????????????????????????????????

  • The immemse power of Corelli's voice was the most exciting of all tenor's.

  • Yes,that was most exciting but lets not forget his pianissimo.COmpared to a tenore lirico it may sound ordinary but coming from such a powerful voice like Corelli is unheard of.

  • lascala123, Once again you are correct. I think you and I are on the same page in understanding the greatness of Franco Corelli

  • i just couldn't believe this is true...

  • The most amazing part is that he was 46 years old (!) and he still sang this amazingly !

  • I do not know what age he was, but a tenor with 46 is too young. Young voice.

  • 46 isn't young for a singer who sang everywhere every months 2 operas and concerts and always with power etc remember at 50 years old corelli lost often of his voice

  • If you read about Corelli in his early career you will find he lost his voice a lot then - when he was pre-30s. That was because he hadn't mastered "Technique". 46 is young for an opera singer. The voice doesn't start to "mature" until 30.

  • infact this is what i said i know that 46 is young for a normal opera singer... anyway the voice star to mature at 20 after at 24 25 and so 30 and etc the 20 years old voice is not the same of the 24 and than the 30 but ht ebig change is at 30 etc yes

  • This is the way I remember this aria, with the lingering diminuendo and explosive climax. I don't know the year (Tosca in Philly), but he was in his prime and all the rage, as you can imagine. The audience clamored on and on for an encore, but there was no way he could have repeated such an impassioned performance.

  • I counted about 19 seconds on that single phrase.

  • This is Opera singing at it's best! Anyone who says Bjorling, Pavarotti or anyone else for that matter, were superior to Corelli needs to listen to this! Corelli was the most impressive opera singer of all time

  • I dunno about Bjorling, he was damn good. But definitely better than Ravioli. Corelli, Bjorling, Caruso. My Three Tenors.

  • I could not agree more with you.

  • Pavarotti and Corelli were very different. Apples and Oranges.

  • In his prime, singing Bel Canto, Pav was unmatched. It was Bel Canto that crowned him "king of the hi C's." Let's not forget that. Sutherland even tought him how to breathe and then took him on a tour in Australia where he matured into the Bel Calto Roles -- Arturo, Tonio, Edagrdo, et. al. Then he went for the "money roles" in Verdi and his voice really changed. Sometimes for the good and sometimes not for the good.

  • Yeah. Sometimes you think "he should've stayed in the lighter roles and protected his voice", but then we wouldn't have him singing stuff like "E Lucevan le Stelle" and "Nessun Dorma"

  • You can hear excellent diminuendo here, so why would he fake it in celeste adia? just because dramatic tenors usually struggle to do it, doesnt mean corelli couldnt!

  • I simply cannot believe how amazing Corelli was in his prime!

  • Either stupid or jelaouse.

This is SINGING not crap voices of today.

Do you want to compare them?

Only the old singers are the greatest.

Today too but who knows where they are!!!!

  • How exciting! How powerful! Thank you for posting. I can't help but laugh at the comments posted who doubt Corelli's abilities. But you see, the authenticity is right here in the recording. Don't listen to corelli, listen to the AUDIENCE. After (even as) Corelli sings "dai veli" the audience stirs in an unmistakable way. They heard it and reacted to it. It's real. Amazing.

  • He is the best. There's no one today who could sing like him.

  • Yes, for example: 1966 Met, live with Price and Mehta. Incredible, fantastic diminuendo on the end of Celeste Aida!

  • The best E Lucevan le Stelle from the best performance of the role Cavaradossi ever.

  • You were dead wrong, "epa300". Not only is the diminuendo at the end of Celeste Aida, EMI studio, not a interpolated later or patched together affair, it is as genuine and true a piece of singing as humanly possible; not only is the last verse, but the whole aria is sung in one take.

  • Yes,as far as I know the engeneering thing is only a hostile gossip.

  • I, for one, do not believe it is genuine. The consensus is that there is no consensus and has been so since the recording was released.

  • Why though? Why would they fake something that he could beyond doubt naturally do? I understand him skipping it in a number of live performances, but in the studio?

    It really makes no sense.
