Very nice. Beautiful language. Slavic and Baltic people have common roots in past which is reflected in their languages. E.g.: latvian --- russian zelta sedlus = zolotoe sedlo (golden saddle) vârti = vorota (gates) migla = mgla (mist) Ugun = ogon' (fire) etc. Phonetical structure as well as verb conjugation is almost the same. Also latvian has more ancient links to the very common P.I.E. language. I.e. viris = viri (latin) - men. Dieva = Deus (god) which is different from slavic languages.

@iradeourum The roots are not that common as you claim. You mean there are linguistic similarities mostly due to fact that geographically one could influence the other. Many Slavic words were due to influence of Russian empire. We have also similar words with Germanic languages, which is a direct result of German influence throughout the centuries. Generally speaking all Indo-European people have commons roots though.

Yes, you are right, but these words are from the common history and not geographically influenced.

By the way, could you advice me an ethymology book for Latvian language?

@iradeourum Try searching lithuanian author "Marija Gimbutas, The Balts" in google. It's in English and free, but I don't know how much of etymology there is. There is probably only in Latvian language like Konstantīns Karulis "Latviešu etimoloģijas vārdnīca" (Konstantins Karulis "Latvian Etymological Dictionary"). I don't think this has been translated to Russian or English. I don't own it though.
