Hi, I really like your videos. I am starting Italian bees in Australia. I have set up 2 brood hives with beeswax foundations and am installing the bees in 3 weeks. Very excited!!
You talk about the queen cells at 6.25. Are they also queen cells at 6.29 on the corner of the frame? 10 or so clumped together...?
So the cells you are seeing are drone cells. They are very similar in appearance to the real queen cells. But you can recognise them by the way they are sticking out of an ordinary worker cell. The capping's are slightly higher then worker cells. Around quarter of an inch about 7mm. Another cell that can be similar is the emergency Queen cell. It is also made from worker eggs and their cells. But they tend to be more like an egg. let me know if you have any more questions :)
@jazzyjames1990 Yep they are the ones. The Irish native bee is way more aggressive then the other breeds. I have had some real fun with queen-less ones in the past. How are your bees?
@workwithnature I have never had the privilege to work with or even see Irish Native Bees. I have seen one wild hive that i would call dangerious.. I removed it from the building and requeened her once they established.
In Ireland are the Irish Native Bee the most common stock? I find them very Interesting. I live in Canada but my family heritage is Irish
@jazzyjames1990 They are, but strange as it might sound, even though the black bees can be some what aggressive. The real danger is when they cross with the buckfast bee. Most bees these days are mostly black, but sometimes you get a bit of yellow in them. That's when you have to be careful. I guess the mix just gets worse. All them different strains are let lose when they bread. At least that is my guess. What kind of bee have you got?
@workwithnature Well here in Canada we have the same problem with buckfast bees. Superseded queens are known to be very dangerious. most beekeepers have Italian bees here. Carnolians are gaining popularity and so are Russian bees. I have 2 hives of pure Russian, 1 hive is Italian and I have 2 carnolian hives. The rest I have are wild hives, or a mix of those with a geneology unknown to me. I have 14 hives.
@workwithnature ;) it was a really good day man! im looking forward to tomorrow already's... hope it did'nt take you too long to get home. hey dont forget to check out the better facebook thingy on me facebook page.
@workwithnature your not wrong. i cant say that my bees have ever been quite that bad, but then again i did select a very calm breed (ligurian). great vid keep it up
I doubt if I'll ever get that close to a hive. I have a very bad reaction when I get stung by wasps. Last time I got stung at the bottom of my thumb, and half my hand swelled up for about 10 days. Not something I'd like to repeat again. Very interesting though. Keep up the good work.
...definitely another great bee vid, do you ever use queen gates on your hives? (only regular bees can go through them) I remember my grandfather used to use them on his once in awhile when he wanted to prevent a swarm and didn't split the hive....
@SleepWhenIamDead Hey there, thanks for your comment, never used them before. Is it a cage you put around the queen to stop her from leaving the hive ? :)
@workwithnature yes, in front of the entrance...the other bees can come and go...than the Queens have to fight it out and the strongest will survive and lead the hive....
@SleepWhenIamDead Ah gotch ja, sounds interesting. it could be useful for other applications. The only reason I would not really go for it in this case is because, I would not be able to split the hive up. Also the old queen would probably be killed and in this case she is only one year old. Sounds like it could have it's uses though. Thanks for your comments :) very good you learn something new every day :)
@workwithnature thanks for the answer, my grandfather wanted honey, and the bees weren't in the shape they are in nowadays, so the priority isn't/was in hive spitting...thanks again!....
@selfreliantboy Hi there, thanks for your comment. I have about 20 at the moment. I don't produce honey with them. I let them have it for winter. I do however split them, with the aim of selling them. I think at the moment it is probably better to allow them to produce bees and not then the extra honey :) I kinda think we need more bees :) Cheers

Wowzers !!.. I really admire your dedication, and all the benefits the bees provide is immeasurable.
Seems a little too dangerous for me though,I freak out when a wasp Buzzes me.
I'll stick to making more habitats for my resident Bumble Bees and leave the swarms to you.
Dan.
