WQXR in New York played the first 30 seconds of this piece as an intro to the one o'clock hour. My mom was a fan of WQXR. Consequently I got hooked on this piece. When I got married, the first 60 seconds of the piece was used as the bridal procession piece for the bridal party and bride entrance. Our organist did a great job orchestrating the first 60 seconds repeatively,
What I really find interesting is all you people making comments about his playing, you're probably right. I'd like to see YOU play this piece and put it up here for US to criticse. Bet you don't.
THIS is quite raw to the ears, I am glad he did it on the organ BUT he needs to stick with a set registration and use the RIGHT ones, and try not to over do...
Originally Moussorgski wrote these pieces for the piano. Everything else that anyone palys on any other instrument is an interpretation. This one is pretty good ;-)
I would disagree. The classical organ world would be a very boring and mundane place if there was no-one willing to push the boundaries of interpretation.
Guillou is just one of those people who is willing to take risks. You may not enjoy his interpretations but I believe he has something to say in his performances.
To label him with insults just shows a lack of class, in my opinion.
What would show a degree of class would be for him to admit he is too far into old age to perform in concert. "Pushing the boundaries"? How about stating the truth of the matter - he is simply screwing up his own transcriptions with performances that are jaw-droppingly incompetent.
Yes, he is old - it shows in his inability to maintain tempi, awkward pedal work and multiple fluffs. It seems to me that the most important factor in any interpretation is simply to hit the right notes, and at this he very often fails.
@inflate98 Moreover, the organ builder himself declared: "Jean Guillou is a sensational orchestrator and his use of the stops and combinations was exciting and enticing. His arrangement of Pictures at an Exhibition was played from memory and brought the house to an immediate standing ovation."
I don't like this arrangement that much, it sounds too muddled, though I'm sure it sounds better in person. Props though, because this piece is already hard enough on piano, which has only one keyboard and no pedals :P
I love the transcription and style but honestly, Mr. Guillou seems to be in a hurry on the organ. Nevertheless, I find it great.

C'est magnifiquement joué, mais l'interprétation n'est pas très belle.

I know Gillou has a great reputation but I hate this interpretation as much as the organ which sounds like a badly tunes theatre organ.

Op welke cd staat dit. Ik ken het van de cd uitgever Dorian op het orgel : the Tonhalle in Zurich.
Als iemand het kan zeggen dan graag een berichtje.

Ahhh yes!! - His MASTERPIECE OF BUNGLING!!
I like hearing him attempt this because it showcases everything that is so utterly wrong with him as an organist!!

I completely agree with you. I just returned from listening to him slaughter Moussorgski at the Disney Hall.
He has no sense of rhythm and very simply cannot play the correct notes. The concert was a disaster.

I just listened to the Master in concert in France this week: the transcription itself is a jewel and please remember he is 79.
