Cabbage Patch dolls on wheels. Commie cars are just as problematic and dumpy as real people which makes them lovable. Soviet and Warsaw Pact cars will be highly-prized collector items in 10 years, especially in the U.S. C'mon now. A soulless Acura NSX vs. a real Volga M-21 with an empty bottle of Stoli in the back, which one will draw the most admirers in the parking lot???
They look like the progeny of an Austin Mini and Rambler American. The display at the auto show must have been inspired by the teacups of vomit at Disneyland.
Go for it, you should get one! Except from the breaking system that somtimes blocks if they have been left on for a long period, like some monthe straigth ore somthing. these cars are actually preddy reliable as well as easy to fix. manny Trabant drivers say that it is the best car they ever had. In the USA, you have to go to Canada and bring one back to the USA, and then have it registered as an "antique imported vehicle", otherwise it won't pass any vehicle inspections.
Why can't the west make a car like that? Classic styling, sporty, cheap, reliable with great load carrying capacity. And, in college I was told that communism was very concerned with the environment, so I'm sure it had a very "green" engine. Bring back East German automobile technology!
Kooool video. Brought back lots of memories since I grew up in one of those, and learned to drive in one. My dad had one and put 700,000 km on it (with engine rebuilt every 100K+ km...)
yeah...more likely is, he put 700-000 km in 10 trabant and 20 trabant engines down...and please, all of u: STOP saying that this car is good ore nice!! because probably 90% of u don't eaven live in the eastern block ore ever have been here to have an good opinion of this car which I have to look at every day because there sadly are some left here..it stink's and makes very much smoke, is old and breaks down every 10 km and can't eaven carry a tractor battery in it's boot!! so please stop!!
carton crap!! if u want an decent eastern-european car get yourself a dacia or lada!!! 4 stroke is better than a 600cc 2 stroke engine with a chassi made out of paper!!
Body was fiberglass, to be exact. By coincident, GM Saturns and pretty much all performance cars (rally cars, for instance) are like that too... Not to say that it was a high performance car with its 23 bhp engine, by no stretch of imagination.
From what I know, the body was made out of a quasi-fiberglass that was made from a waste product of the cotton processing industry. It was then reinforced with a number of polymers that, when burned, released highly toxic Dioxin.
Both of these cars are based on 40 to 50 years old designs by Renault or Fiat. Are they still even produced? What has been improved in dacias since the licence to produce them in Romania was sold by Renault some 30+ yrs ago after the producction of the original R12 had ended in France? Granted, they have 4 cycle engines but I'd question their reliability.
No, thank goodness (and good for the environment!) they stopped manufacturing those relics some ten years ago. Near-zero reliability for Eastern Block car makers until they were bought (Dacia/Renault or Skoda/VW) or got into joint-ventures with Western makes. 4-strokes engines are much more complicated than air-cooled 2-strokes, so I guess that reliability was rock-bottom.....
One thing I can say about Soviet cars is that they have extremly weak engines, but you can beat and wear them out, and keep driving. If they brake down, their construction is so simple, you can repair it yourself.
Me too man. Trabant is the best car ever. It is so light that me and my friend used to lift one and just put it sideways and make the driver's job a nightmare :)
So is my scooter's 50cc uncat 2-stroke engine! But it's ghastly news for the environment because the maker didn't certainly bother to add catalysts (or any other modern device). Making reliable MODERN engines for reliable MODERN cars, that's the challenge Eastern auto makers were unable to take!
Driving a Trabant is an unique experience... Last year I bought one in Berlin, in 3 days I came home in Naples, Italy, and now I could not live without my little Station Wagon (P601K). Very nice video.
Trabant is cult car here, in the former communist block. Like all communist-era cars, because they are simple technology, easy to repair and tune, they were designed to run for 20-30 years... It is true to ALL East Germanian, Polish, Czehslovakian, Yugoslavian, Russian, Romanian cars. Trabant 601 has 2stroke engine, Americans use it in lawmowers and chainsaws... lol!!! Some were Trabant 1.1 with 1100 cubic centimert 4stroke VW engine by default.
