I melt every time I hear All I've Got To Do, Till There Was You, Yesterday, Michelle, In My Life, Eleanor Rigby, For No One, Imagine, Jealous Guy, My Sweet Lord, Isn't It A Pity and Here Today....
By the way, there are a couple of tape speed glitches in this video that put sudden pitch changes into the mix. A common thing with early film transfers to video tape.
Watch Paul and John working the mic in Ticket to Ride. Proximity to the mic makes all the difference in a live mix and it's give and take all the way with these guys. Watch them weave in and out to give that excellent balance between John's lead and Paul's high harmonies. With the Beatles, you've got Wow.
And the Ed Sullivan show in 1965 was filmed 1 day before Shea Stadium and aired almost 1 month later.
The senior Harrisons used to do ballroom dancing in Blackpool. Some 25 years later, their beautiful son George would leave his stamp on the place with his friends, the Beatles! The Beatles RULE!! World's Greatest Band!
These are the same songs sung by The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show (the one taped on Aug. 15 and shown in September -- last black & white show of THAT series). The "Blackpool Night Out" show you see here is comparable to Ed Sulivan in the U.S.; in both cases, the studio orchestra backs up Paul McCartney doing "Yesterday". "Yesterday" studio recording was done in June 1965, and there is a story about McCartney playing (rough?) version during the making of "Help!" movie (earlier 1965).
Man I always go through these phases with great bands and stuff like The Who, The Kinks, Bob Dylan, Carl Perkins, Creedence, but man The Beatles will always be favorite. Nobody beats em. Call them overrated or whatever you want, they're still the best, and will always be special to me.
@jjlevito I think from the orchestra pit in front of the stage...common in theatres of this size designed for variety shows wqith live music. I don't hink it's been added on in an edit, although the orchestration on Yesterday was George Martin's idea.
I always thought, "those days are gone would have been a better lyric than these days are gone." Grammtically, the use of "those days" is correct if John intended to talk about the past. Technically, "these days" is still in the present. I don't know. Was John trying to achieve some sort of time distortion, cubist perspective?
@crizzy71 I don't understand your reply (sorry). John is the primary writer on the song, "Help." So, I referred to him as he wrote the lyrics. We know that he penned the lyrics since he has spoken about "Help" in many interviews.
@Doleafol My mistake, it was late at night, sorry, I thought you were quoting "Yesterday". My fault for trying to be a know-it-all at 3 AM or whatever it was. Obviously those lyrics are from "Help" not "Yesterday", I don't know what I was thinking, I'm a huge Beatles fan too, I fail this time.
@crizzy71 No need to apologize so profusely. It was an innocent mistake. But, I am glad to see that you are a decent youtube viewer and act to uphold the decorum on these comment pages. Anyway, the error that I noted in the Help lyrics is just one of many "grammatical" errors that I have noticed in several Beatles songs. The interesting matter is whether or not the errors are intentional. "Grammar errors" also appear in Day Tripper and A Hard Day's Night. Anyway, take care.
@Doleafol Well, I don't know if it was intentional or not, but it was probably necessary to make the lyrics fit the melody. Those "errors" though aren't technically considered wrong if they're part of a song or poem, though, because artist's are given "artistic license."
hahah the very end when they all try dancing with the girls in the funny dresses is hilarious. if you watch george at 8:38 it looks like he is trying to get a peek under one of their dresses haha.
Interesting. I hadn't heard of Opportunity Knocks. When George said that, I thought he was being facetious, as in Paul hadn't actually made it big yet and this was his chance. I kind of wish that is what he meant, it kind of de-humorizes the joke :)

@sccitylhh I know what you mean but the 4 of them where always taking the mick out of each other both on and off camera. Dikspecial rather misses your point and perception of the matter. Why are people so aggressive with their replies? That is so easy whilst a measured response shows far more ability to think and have a rational discussion.
@mollyboo83 George says "Thank you very much thank you. We'd like to do something now which we've never ever done before and its a track off our new lp and this song's called Yesterday. And so for Paul McCartney of Liverpool Opportunity Knocks!" Opportunity Knocks was a talent show in the UK during the sixties and seventies.
@Deadkurtrulz LOL Deadkurtrulz was trying to actually have a decent discussion and was kind enough to point out that Dylan and The Beatles influenced one another. For his efforts, Steveconn retorts with an insult to the Beatles and a backhanded insult to DKR. DKR returns the well deserved insult back to SteveAss to which SteveAss heaps on more insults. But wait, over on The Beatles (NME-1965) - Part 1 Steveconn states he doesn't berate other posters...hmmmm I smell your BS Steve. Eat crow Steve
@Deadkurtrulz Agreed Deadkurtrulz. I too have been listening to the Beatles since I was VERY young and had no idea what hype even was or that any even existed. The Beatles are great and that really is the beginning and end of it.
I'm merely a shit-stirring Yid-troll rapidly approaching middle-age who enjoys making enemies....and believe me folks, I've got several of all creeds and colors...white, black, brown, yellow.
The singing a little cloying (especially the early, chipmunk harmonization), the songwriting boyband fluff until Dylan -who remains the century's greatest songwriter, sorry - gave them the example to go deeper. Alot of 60's nostalgia and easy-listening memories passed from parents to their children go into that billion dollars, as well as the fact the majority of their catalogue fits a nice lukewarm slot for white people everywhere.As musicians they weren't the best, though.Sorry
So they wore leather jackets and looked tough in front of some sailors and hookers for a year or so. Their claim to fame was the smiling, choir boy look that won the hearts of the mainstream. The blueprint for the Backstreet Boys, N' Sync, Jonas Brothers, etc., etc. In 2200 we'll be listening to State Farm jingles.
@steveconn The Beatles are in no way a template for the boy bands. They were a template for the bands that followed them in the 60's and 70's. Boy bands typically are pre-arranged groups of boys who otherwise don't know each other, don't write their own music, perform choreographed dancing, and typically don't play instruments. I've said this all to you before but as usual you ignore it b/c it proves you wrong. Tell us how the Beatles did any of those above 4 mentioned items. You lose
@steveconn Their strength was in their songwriting, not their abilities on their respective instruments. Your claim that their "catalogue fits a nice lukewarm slot" is your opinion. That is how YOU see it. The VAST majority of professional songwriters (that does not include you btw), agree that it was their ability to hit upon universal emotions that made them so enjoyable. They wrote songs that many could relate to and enjoy, on a multitude of subjects.
Getting carried away. A middle of the road pop-rock band that discovered drugs and Dylan and had half their albums buried under tons of George Martin production.
As live musicians any number of bands including the Stones, the Who, The Band,
etc. could clean their clock. It's fun to go along with four decades of 'best ever' hype, but the evidence is in the music.
@steveconn It will be in the music ... and what stands the test of time. 47 years since 1963 beatlemania. George Martin acted on what the beatles wanted in their songs. But, opinions are our very own. Peace.
@steveconn Yes the evidence is in the music and the music shows that the Beatles were supperior live, in the studio, and All around better songwriters. The stones wern't a good live band untill the 70s when monitors and stage tech had advanced. Listen to the apple rooftop concert and it will show you how they would have sounded in 1969 had the not broken up and began playing live again. The who were a great live band but wernt nearly as good in the studio and roger daultrey SUCKS LIVE.....
@steveconn So why dont you go face the facts and give up. If It wasnt for the Beatles there wouldnt be your presious Who or Stones, and FYI The Band wasn't even that great... Watch Robbie Robbertson fuck up the let it be solo at the rock and roll hall of fame show from 1998 I believe.

Watch Robbie Robbertson fuck up the let it be solo at the rock and roll hall of fame show from 1998 I believe. Middle of the road pop-rock band my ass, So if the\at was the case then That makes the stones and the who worse than middle of the road because they always tried to copy/follow the Beatles and fail at it.
@steveconn Yes indeed, the proof is in the pudding Stevieboy. First correct thing I've seen you post on youtube. As everyone else on here has noted, they have more than passed the test of time. And only a moron would call the most reverred and respected band of all time "middle-of-the-road".
@steveconn I do use my ears moron. You know, the ears that, unlike yours, can hear the fact that Lennon doesn't use just 3 chords; the ears that, unlike yours, know that the "Hare Hare" part of "My Sweet Lord" is not the same melody as the "TooLang" part of "He's so Fine"; the ears that, unlike yours, can actually hear what the similar melodies in those two songs actually are. My advise, go get some ear training then come and talk. Crash and burn you deaf git LOL End of story
im the biggest Beatles fan ever, but, in regards to duet singing(as in John and Paul), a few more great duets would be Phil & Don(Everly), Buck & Don(Buckaroos)
thank-you! I love this 2 part live performance of the Beatles. Ticket-to-Ride; get John's tease of the famous head-nod, plus the rarest thing; George smiling!
Yes they were great singers. For many years I wondered why I was a Beatles fan but the Rolling Stones just didn't do it for me. The answer finally dawned on me: The Beatles could sing! Really sing, on pitch, in key, with someone doing a very different harmony right in their ear. The Stones shout more than sing. I know, it's only Rock n Roll and I like it, but not like this. And this performance, so unadorned and right there. People forget how good they were live, once upon a time.

@tspnyc Great comment! Thanks - they were soooo awesome live. I always thought the thing that separates the great from the wannabe's - if you have to have the studio to sound good and can't bring it live.
Fantastic raw vocals and harmonies. These excellent live versions could have been album cuts

@Deadkurtrulz Agreed Deadkurtrulz. I too have been listening to the Beatles since I was VERY young and had no idea what hype even was or that any even existed. The Beatles are great and that really is the beginning and end of it.

Really, glorified elevator muzak if you think about it. That's eternal, too.

Take me with a pinch of salt.
I'm merely a shit-stirring Yid-troll rapidly approaching middle-age who enjoys making enemies....and believe me folks, I've got several of all creeds and colors...white, black, brown, yellow.
Even fellow Yids reckon I'm a bit of a Dick.

@Deadkurtrulz

@steveconn insert giggle at "boy band" After Hamburg anything but boys.
In the year 2200; they'll still be listening to The Beatles.
cornball918 1 year ago
@cornball918

You lose
Reason4U2Die 1 year ago
@steveconn Their strength was in their songwriting, not their abilities on their respective instruments. Your claim that their "catalogue fits a nice lukewarm slot" is your opinion. That is how YOU see it. The VAST majority of professional songwriters (that does not include you btw), agree that it was their ability to hit upon universal emotions that made them so enjoyable. They wrote songs that many could relate to and enjoy, on a multitude of subjects.

@Deadkurtrulz
Getting carried away. A middle of the road pop-rock band that discovered drugs and Dylan and had half their albums buried under tons of George Martin production.
As live musicians any number of bands including the Stones, the Who, The Band,
etc. could clean their clock. It's fun to go along with four decades of 'best ever' hype, but the evidence is in the music.
steveconn 1 year ago
@steveconn It will be in the music ... and what stands the test of time. 47 years since 1963 beatlemania. George Martin acted on what the beatles wanted in their songs. But, opinions are our very own. Peace.
cornball918 1 year ago 2

Middle of the road pop-rock band my ass, So if the\at was the case then That makes the stones and the who worse than middle of the road because they always tried to copy/follow the Beatles and fail at it.
BL80488 1 year ago 2
@steveconn Yes indeed, the proof is in the pudding Stevieboy. First correct thing I've seen you post on youtube. As everyone else on here has noted, they have more than passed the test of time. And only a moron would call the most reverred and respected band of all time "middle-of-the-road".
Reason4U2Die 1 year ago
@Reason4U2Die
Stalker, just use your ears, not regurgitated hype. It's simply polite, middle-of-the-road pop. End of story.
steveconn 1 year ago
@steveconn I do use my ears moron. You know, the ears that, unlike yours, can hear the fact that Lennon doesn't use just 3 chords; the ears that, unlike yours, know that the "Hare Hare" part of "My Sweet Lord" is not the same melody as the "TooLang" part of "He's so Fine"; the ears that, unlike yours, can actually hear what the similar melodies in those two songs actually are. My advise, go get some ear training then come and talk. Crash and burn you deaf git LOL End of story

im the biggest Beatles fan ever, but, in regards to duet singing(as in John and Paul), a few more great duets would be Phil & Don(Everly), Buck & Don(Buckaroos)
and Ira & Charlie(Louvin). cheers
