what kind of alternate energy are "YOU" using today???? All of you? there are vacuum tube water heaters, solar panels, geothermal heating and cooling, and others, that could be used today and have a payback in under ten (10) years. These are viable today and available readily. What is the payback time of oil and gas and coal; we'll be dead and gone before that bill comes due!!!
Love your enthusiasm and well-done graphics. Alas, getting homes off the grid will do little to promote energy independence. Less than 2% of home energy comes from oil. Solar and wind: Green, yes. Independence, no.
Thanks for the thought. Nationally, 20% of all energy produced goes to power homes, so a switcheroo might be in order. if we can save that energy, we can transfer the saving to other sectors that do use more oil and coal!
It's great and all, but it's not actually a new idea. There were books on autonomous houses in the 1970s, complete with fish farms and so on. Solar paint is what excites me - google solar paint mitra and you will see what I mean - spray on energy independence. If you think having a prize for this is a good idea, well maybe. Huge profits might be an even better motivator though. . .
Thanks for the comment!I know that the idea is not new, Alternative energy sources have been tried with many different implementations(hence the fish idea). The point is to take is out of weird ideas, into affordable, viable, mass consumable products.I would like to really have this idea take off. I love the Google spray solar, those are the types of ideas that teams could bring to the table on an xprize of this sort!. The key is making it truly affordable to the average person! Vote!, let's do it
That is a great idea. There are tremendous ways of being innovative with this idea!. Spread the word, I can use all your friends support as well. Let's make a difference that will help us all!
Not only cool, but it would save us huge amounts on our utility bills, increase our property values, keep us from ever having blackouts, save us billions in electrical grid construction and transmission costs, stop utility monopolies, etc, etc, etc. Remember, it can only happen with your vote. Tell everyone you know to vote for this idea, this is a real chance to help everyone at once! thanks for the comment!
Renewable energy is cheaper in mass instalments and ideal locations.
A class 6 wind-zone can provide electricity for 1/10th the cost that rooftop solar panels could supply my house with electricity that I would then have to store to use at night.
That's the idea behind the carbon offsets. It's just better economically to put up wind-farms than rooftop solar panels or small turbines in poor wind zones.
if you added up the cost of the panels/windmills/whatever for every house hold then it would probably be about the same as the energy we have now. so in reality there would really be no difference
That is the point of the Xprize,to create much more energy production (45%+) yet be much cheaper than what is currently availabe. innovation in technology added to widespread distribution can make this path a very affordable one. There are currently ideas for new types of solar tech that can produce 10x the energy and yet cost 1/4 of current systems. Current wind generation technology is close to breakthroughs as well. I believe that with the right help, this can really work!
But still, solar, wind, geothermal, or even hydro power is very expensive. On a large scale this would be an exceeding amount of money on the Nations budget
Acutally, Innovation can change that. Currently there is technology on the drawing boards in solar that can produce 10x the energy but only costing 1/4 of todays panels. Same with wind and Geoexchange systems! On top of all that, the xprize spurs innovation, that's its purpose! Before spaceship one, no one would have thought that we could send a man into space for 1/10th of what it costs the government. When private companies compete, quantum leaps in technology are created! Yeah!

I have a plan!
If you would burn up all of the American fat asses in a power plant you would eliminate the "energy problem"...
Now, where's my prize! :D

Another idea would be to add the sewer system into the energy system. I am sure there is a way to use the methane from all that?
Anyways, you have my vote. No only does this help the environment, but also saves people a lot of money!

Cool! That is very neat! I think it would be fantastic if homes all over the U.S. could be self-powered. Awesome!

great insight. That is the purpose of this idea is to create innovation so that the cost of a local system can match the wind-farms and help us all!
