Mascherano was sent off because he swore at the ref several times, did a host of bad tackles (he was lucky not to get sent off before this incident for a bad tackle) and then finally complained to the ref again. We don't know what he said to the ref, so how can you defend him?
Once again, I don't know what situation you're talking about with Rooney, but if true then he should be sent off

Vidic and Ferdinand had fouled Torres 16 times between them with no booking. At the time Mascherano was sent off. Masherano had given away 4 fouls. The reason he was sent off was because he quite rightly was frustrated with the inconsistency and complained. The respect climate and Ferguson comments did the rest.
