The Gothic Franchise is now officially a sell out and the cash cow will be milked dry. Other developers than Piranha Bytes are developing Arcania. That means - although it may be a good game - it'll lose a lot of buyers (including me) who miss the old atmosphere. Everything in this game (except graphics) especially the fighting system is a kick in the face for a Gothic Fanboy like me. Nuff said...

Anyway, to sum up, I'm not saying any of these clichés are terrible and should never be used because most of them make up the backbone of fantasy as we know it. I'd just like to see something new put forward and the main reason I commented was because of 0:30 and 1:00, orc forest and orc island. I just feel that the whole orc thing has been well overused and I want to see something that doesn't use stereotypically hideous or ugly creatures as antagonists.

I'd really like to see an Oblivion like game (might as well be TES 5) that keeps generating quests and NPCs. Think of the dark brotherhood- it shouldn't be restricted to 10 quests (I don't remember the exact number), but it should keep generating random contracts, so you could make a real career as a dark brother, and when you become the listener, to still be able to fulfill contracts. The same for other guilds. It would make the sandbox feeling go away.

Why do games and fantasy in general like to use Orcs as the enemies so much? Can't they think of something else? Would it REALLY be so bad if HUMANS were the bad guys for a change? You know.. Have a war between two kingdoms of the same race maybe? I'm sure it would have a much more compelling story. Better than:

"Oh no ugly orcs/trolls have destroyed my village and now I must become a warrior in a month to kill the most powerful wizard of all time even though better trained people can't.."

No, human bad guys aren't uncommon in games or fantasy, and they don't make a more compelling story. How the hell does:

"Oh no, human army x pillaged my village belonging to country y and now I must have revenge" make a story that's somehow better than "Oh no, orcs pillaged my village and now I must have revenge"? It doesn't.

Okay so not EVERY story lacks human villains but fantasy in general seems to follow the same archetype in MOST stories. The 'oh no my village has been raided and now I must be a mega hero' isn't used in every story but it's one of those cliché examples that are still found in books and games all the time. I'd rather have some really interesting and cunning plots going on involving human politics like in George RR Martin's 'Song of Ice and Fire' series. That's all I meant.

Eragon and Star Wars just off the top of my head. it's more of an idea of cliché than anything and there is a very specific niche it fits into. There was a website that had pretty much every fantasy cliché listed that was pretty funny. There was a proper word for what you call falling back on these clichés too. I'd like to try something new that doesn't rely heavily on magic for story. It's a cheap way out. I'd rather try out a game that expands on conventional weapons and means to kill people like adding things that are absent from most games: Lances, Halberds, Spears, etc.

I don't expect you to agree with me necessarily but there isn't enough innovation in some games nowadays and I'd just like to see someone do something different rather than stick with the same old orcs, elves, dwarves, magic, etc.

Well, I don't know if it would still be a fantasy game, rather than a medieval simulator.

Personally I liked the fighting interface from daggerfall, and I think it's a shame that this was simplified rather than expanded on in later elder scroll titles. daggerfall magic casting sucked though, and it keeps bugging the game.

In most rpg's it doesn't really matter to to me what weapon you use because it's usually 3rd person point and click fighting.
