  • Vincent twice vincent twice

  • If you think about it, Sherlock isn't as dumb here as he sometimes is. A guess doesn't have to correct to be good, and those were definitely some good guesses he made as to the circle's whereabouts. Also, unlike in the other episodes, he actually does listen to Watson. He just doesn't understand him. And we can't really fault him for that. I think just about anyone would have suspected that Watson was just trying to warn him about time running out.

  • Watson spots the circle on the clock. Watson sure was a smart dog.

  • I think I remember the intro.What r they parodying if anything?.

  • @yoyoyoy500 The intro to Mysterious Theater has to do with Vincent Prince's YouTube skit called "Classic Mystery Intro" where the painted woman on "Classic Mystery Intro" was moving her head and seen drinking out of her wine glass. But here on Mysterious Theater, the painted woman is a frozen painting which felt scary to me when I was very young.

  • @afriendofbean It's a good thing they didn't use the wailing woman on the wall from the REAL "Mystery!" intro. THAT would've been much scarier than the sad woman in black.

  • @wileyk209zback Was the wailing woman the woman from "Classic Mystery Intro?" and was the sad woman in black the woman from these Sesame Street Mysterious Theater intros? To me, the woman here on the intro to Mysterious Theater looked scary seeing the look in her eyes and the way how she is holding a wine glass up to her mouth along with hearing a wolf howl with thunder and lightning. (At first, I thought the woman had a lollipop up to her mouth, then a rose, now I know it was a wine glass).

  • @afriendofbean

    do you have down syndrome?

  • @FriendlyWalrus What's your problem?! I wasn't talking to you! Whatever I saw and felt when I was very young was back then!

  • @afriendofbean

Obviously I don't think you're retarded for being scared of vincent twice. I was too (in like 1994) but the way you type is completely nonsensical. That is all.

  • @FriendlyWalrus Okay but, I actually wasn't scared of Vincent Twice, it was the painted woman in the intro that I was scared of when I was very young. I know it does sound strange the way I mentioned how I thought the woman was holding a lollipop at first but, that was because I hardly paid attention to what she was holding because the moment I saw her when I was very young, I changed the channel fast. The way how I typed and said it was just my way of saying it.

  • @wileyk209zback Yeah

  • that intro bitch is creepy

  • @heathb4r14 Are you talking about the painted woman? If so, I agree. I was always scared of Mysterious Theater because of her seeing the intro and once the intro ended, I would watch the rest of the skit. The thing that scared me about the painted woman was seeing the way how she was holding a wine glass to her mouth (I first thought it was a lollipop, then a rose thinking she was smelling a rose since there was a rose next to the gravestone). It was also scary seeing the look in her eyes.

  • Oops. Marty flubbed at the end. He said "join ust."

  • The music still sends chills down my spine.

  • yeah its SO creepy. I have remembered the music and the lady for about a good 18 years now since I last saw it. I thought maybe it was some kind of dream I had, but my blood stopped in its tracks when I finally saw this clip after all these years. It still eats at me. I don't know why.

  • @cartoonistjack mine is 21 years.. sometimes i accidentally saw it with chills.. but most of the time i scroll down or go to another tab and i will just listen to the music..

  • I always liked these stories, they were so much fun!:-) That dog looked ready to explode (ha, ha, ha)!

  • it was the painted lady and the stock noises wolf holwing that spooked me when i was a tot

  • @motherbrain86 The only part of this that ever truly scared me, was the storm raging outside. (wooo)

  • @FilmmakeroftheFuture the woooo is wolf howl...

  • Suppose "Mysterious Theater" ran longer past 1992, and they decided to replace Vincent Twice with a new host, Diana Pigg? (Naturally, it'd be a pig version of Diana Rigg, probably made out of an Oinker Sister pig puppet.) They could also continue to do Sherlock Hemlock stories, or perhaps introduce a new detective like Hercule Porciot? (another pig detective)

  • @wileyk209zback Well, let's not forget these:

Inspector Adam Dogleash (a dog detective; pun on Dalgleish, used out of Watson)

Brother Catfael (a cat detective; pun on Brother Cadfael, used out of Chip and Dip)

Inspector Horse (a horse detective; pun on Inspector Morse, used out of Buster the Wonder Horse)

Lord Peter Wormsey (a worm detective; pun on Lord Peter Wimsey, used out of Slimey)

Christopher Fowl (a chicken detective; pun on Christopher Foyle, used out of any of the 4 brown SS chickens)

  • @Ian16545 Those are all great ideas! They could all be used on the new Diana Pigg "Mysterious Theater," and even continue to use Sherlock Hemlock if need be.

  • yeah, this scared the shit out of me

  • Vincent Twice looks like Guy Smileys creepy older brother, who likes to wear blue eye shadow for some reason. It has been more than 25 years since I have seen all of these skits, great to watch them again.

  • I always thought Vincent Twice looked kinda like Guy Smiley, too

  • I agree. I know the guy who sang "Wide Open Spaces" here on Sesame Street also had the same head as Guy Smiley.

  • What is so scary about it?

  • I was wondering what kind of scarier stuff did you see on Sesame Street, jonnytbirdzback. It may be interesting to me.

  • The Mysterious Theater segments used to scare me too as a kid but, thankfully, it was removed.

Also,Mysterious Theater is a cheap ripoff of the original Mystery! series.

  • I wish this skit used the full-length "Mysterious Theater" theme music like "The Missing Cat" and "Missing Toast" skits did at the beginning; it would've fit perfectly here, if the Vincent Twice intro was long enough (but I could do without this skit using the closing version of the theme)

  • I hear yeah...

In fact I got a wicked idea for a better ending.

Vincent Twice does the closure without the music, then the scene switches to a single burning candle on a table with a book next to it.

The credits roll by as the music plays, and then at the end the candle blows out... the MYSTERIOUS THEATER logo appears and the thunder strikes

  • Sir. Doyle would be so proud :)

  • I know how to get a Sprout copy. It's from the episode in which Telly sees a mysterious letter X.

That was probably the final time Mysterious Theater ever aired.

  • Or, maybe the last Mysterious Theater skit was on the episode where Big Bird received birdseed bread by his Granny Bird (I remember watching every episode on Sesame Street and that was the last episode/time I saw Mysterious Theater). The Mysterious Theater skit on that episode with Big Bird receiving birdseed bread was the skit about "The Case of the Missing Toast." I know that was the last Mysterious Theater skit since at the end, Vincent Twice said "until next time, if there is a next time."

  • how? you have?

  • Oh, god the beginning scared the hell out of me when I was a kid! When I see that lady in black and hear the wolf noise, I run away and hide under the couch or my bed to keep myself away. I was afraid she'd come out and get me and stove me in that tombstone! AAAAHHHH!!!!

  • hahaha..same here!!

  • that is exactly what i would do!

  • Hey, if you think THIS was scary, has anyone ever heard of that Sesame Street episode from 1976 when the Wicked Witch of the West made an appearance? (She was played by Margaret Hamilton reprising the role from "The Wizard of Oz." She threatened to turn Big Bird into a feather duster and David into a basketball. The episode scared the crap out of a lot of kids, and has not been rerun ever since.

  • Scary

  • I wonder what it'd be like if the Scooby-Doo gang were on "Mysterious Theater?" I know that Scooby and Shaggy would DEFINITELY be scared. They'd probably be afraid of Vincent Twice, too!

  • dis completely terrified me wen i was a tyke!!!!! I would imagine the lady comin to get me!!!! I would have nightmares a lot as well!!! Even now wen i watch the intro it sends a shiver up my spine!!!!

  • same here...

  • air Start, detroit diesel cc-d456 with a cummins 45 drivetrain

    ya air lunk

  • Oh and BTW, I forgot to mention this, but the "Mysterious Theater" intro reminds me of the Renaissance Pictures closing logo used on the Hercules and "Xena: Warrior Princess" TV shows, but it was a thousand times scarier than this! It had an extreme zoom-out on a portrait of some 16th-century man, which proceeded to rip in half to reveal a thunderstorm! And they had this unholy "AAAAAAAAIIIIIIIII" monk chant in the background! Anyone notice the similarities?

  • LOL!!! "We're dealing with a diabolical mind here!"

  • HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!! :D suitable 4 halloween video...

  • I kinda remember seeing this one as a kid, back in 1991-1993. I was only a tiny bit scared of the intro, mainly because of the music and the sound effects (the wolf howling, thunder, cat meowing and dungeon door SFX), but I actually wasn't that scared of Vincent Twice. In fact, I kinda liked him, especially in "The Case of the Missing Toast," which I also remember seeing when I was little!

  • I live in Australia and have remembered this sketch from when I was about 3. All I remembered was the tall figure in black, the music then running to my mum because it scared the SHIT out of me. But now that I looked it up it feels good to see it coz it isn't scary at all! I also used to get really angry at them for putting something with such scary music on a fekin kids show.

  • Oh I have the EXACT same memory

Whenever that lady in the black came on I would scream haha I used to call him "scary guy smiley" apparently

My memories were that the starting bit was more dark and threatening but I suppose watching it now, it's not as bad as I remember it... but still pretty freaky!

  • me three..!! i also used to be very frightened when i see the lady in black... but recently i overcame my fear by taking one peek at it,and poof! no more chills and fast heartbeat.. instead,i starting to like it.. :D

  • for me i cried more often at night..

  • I love this episode

  • oh god the opening is scarey as shit. this used to scare me as a kid. why would they have this. this could scare the shit outta kids.

  • :S I'm still afraid of it! LOL!!!

  • this used too scare the shit out of me when i was 3 i used too make my mom watch sesame street in the morning to make sure it weasnt on hahaha

  • "A rectangle. Drat!"

  • Your description sounded familiar. I thought it would do the same to me upon hearing that thunderclap, which is one of the things that frightens me even though I'm now an adult. But it didn't after all, as I knew kids' shows aren't supposed to have scary stuff in them.

  • hi 5!me too!!it brought me nightmares for 18 yrs...(btw i'm 18 dis yr..)

  • I wonder whatever became of Vincent Twice.

  • I remember seeing this circa 1994. I was scared to death of vincent twice, but always felt like a pussy fo being afraid of a sesame stret sketch. After reading everyones posts it seems I was not the only one scared by him. Do you think thats why sesame street stopped making these?

  • Well, some people (including myself) were afraid of these Mysterious Theater skits. Some people were afraid of Vincent Twice but, more people (myself including) were afraid of the intro. to Mysterious Theater because the lady in the beginning looked scary, and hearing the sounds of a wolf howling and thunder and lightning crashing along with seeing the painted woman looked scary and these skits probably gave kids bad dreams seeing the intro. This is probably why Mysterious Theater was gone.

  • Kids being scared probably was a factor ( I was certainly terrified by that intro) but it was also the fact that Sesame Street retired Sherlock Hemlock in the mid 90's, hence all of his sketches stopped being shown.

  • Actually, Sherlock Hemlock was taken off Sesame Street in the early 2000s. It was Vincent Twice who was taken off Sesame Street in the late 90s.

  • I know I know its a take-off on MYSTeRy! and me and my mom used to watch that series 20 some years ago as well. It didn't scare me it intrigued me. I liked the wailing woman in the opening animation, she's like lying on a gravestone and she goes"oohah, ooooooah...anybody know what I"m talking about?

  • I did see the Classic Mystery Intro with the woman drinking from a wine glass and holding a hankerchief but, I didn't see the one with the woman on a gravestone saying oohah ooooooah. The woman from the Classic Mystery Intro almost looks like the one from here on Mysterious Theater except the woman here on Mysterious Theater is holding a red rose up to her nose in her left hand. Also, the Classic Mystery Intro woman was moving but here on Mysterious Theater, the woman is very still.

  • sweet christ this scared the bejesus out of me when I was a tyke

  • Who says that 1990s Sesame Street can't be scary?

  • Ah, memories.

  • The part that scared me most was the little scary chiming sound made every time he found an incorrect shape, thankfully, that was cut out here.

  • I think the chiming sound was actually added in later reruns of this sketch around the mid-to-late 1990s. I don't recall any chiming noises when I saw this except for the clock chiming 5:00. What I mostly remember about this skit outside the Vincent Twice scenes was Sherlock Hemlock talking about the table hiding the shape, then knocking it over and saying "a SQUARE!"

  • The beginning was kinda scary. I was not familiar with this when I was little.

  • I grew up with Sesame Street from 1990 to 1993. I found this a tiny bit scary as a kid, but not too scary, and the only ones I remember seeing was this one and "The Case of the Missing Toast."

  • I have to agree with you 100% on that fact.

  • Me too. Mysterious Theater is the bomb. The singing orange, on the other hand, now that's truly freaky.

  • I don't understand what anyone could find scary about this. Look up that stop-motion SS video of the orange singing opera. Now THAT is creepy. Mysterious Theatre and Monsterpiece Theatre were some of my favorite skits on sesame street XD

  • every time i saw this as a little kid id run screaming it would scare the shit out of me especially that lady at the begining for some reason

  • Who is that lady at the beginning supposed to be?

  • Mysterious Theatre is a take-off on the PBS series MYSTERY! and it's introductionary cartoon by Edward Gorey. Veiled women and grave stones are kind of a signature of his. I remember this clip so well from when I was a kid and I think it's why I like Edward Gorey now. I'm so relieved to have finally found it again!

  • The lady in the beginning of this skit has to do with the intro. to Masterpiece Theater called "Classic Mystery Intro." with host Vincent Price. On the "Classic Mystery Intro." there is no close up of the lady but, here there is. Probably here on Mysterious Theater and on the "Classic Mystery Intro." it's probably just a decoration painting for fun of a Chinese lady.

  • I was always scared to see the intro. to Mysterious Theater because seeing that lady in the beginning and a wolf howling sounded scary. In the intro. to Mysterious Theater, I always wondered what that lady was holding in her left hand between her nose and mouth. I used to think that she had her tongue on a lollipop but, I now know that it's a painting of her smelling a rose in a cemetery while holding a hankercheif in her right hand.

  • I saw the REAL intro to Mystery (the 1980s version) and it has the exact same shot of the woman with the rose at the grave, except it's black and white and it's animated. It even had the same wolf howling sound effect.

  • i saw that one on website before but it's not so scary as tis one.

  • yeah,me too!!wow,looks like i'm not e onli one who is scared of e intro...by e way,e artist sketched dis pic,n den colour it..

  • That was creepy

  • This sketch was really scary when I was a little kid

  • It's good to know I'm not the only one who was not scared by "Mysterious Theater" as a kid. In fact, I loved it. I think Vincent Twice is a very cool character and I was always excited to find out what mystery he'd be presenting.
