  • Great work by avalanche control but I wonder what the yearly cost in Kootenay pass is, and why avalanche sheds and tunnels aren't considered on this stretch of road? Would the road not be able to open quicker after a major snow?

  • @infernovideo We asked our avalanche control your question and wanted to share their reply. "Hi, thanks for the question. Ministry staff have studied the option of building a snowshed/tunnel in this area, but when the costs are compared with our current avalanche control program, it’s just not a practical option."

  • @MinistryofTranBC Thanks for getting back to me! I'm sure all the people who work in the pass's are happy for the work. I was looking at it from a keep the road open so goods can keep more pov. I wonder how much of that is in the calculation for savings, and how many years of avalanche control was calculated? Won't the road be used indefinitely into the future? I don''t see how tunnels and snow sheds are not a good investment. But until that happens I do appreciate the work to keep roads open.

  • Yes, you are right. Avalanche tunnels and snow sheds are good investments in locations where the cost for benefit can be justified. Kootenay Pass would be 100% reliable by building a tunnel, but spending the amount of money it would take to build such a tunnel would not be a wise use of taxpayers’ money, especially considering that the current avalanche program already reflects a high standard of industry best practice for the levels of traffic and hazards they are exposed to.

  • @MinistryofTranBC Yeah I see that. I guess it's still not a busy enough road. Even the TransCan could have more sheds and tunnels than currently in use. So I guess that route would get upgrades before a smaller route like this one. Keep up that challenging work of keeping people and goods moving through those challenging passes in winter, and thanks for writing.
