The kalimba is very ancient in Africa - metal tined kalimbas were first made in Africa about 1300 years ago. This type of kalimba is also made in Africa, since 1954 - the Hugh Tracey Kalimba uses a western scale, but its design is based on several different traditional instruments. -Mark
Two of my favorite melodies! Well done! I LOVE the Kalimba music - and I have just bought myself one of these lovely instruments! Very inspiring! Carolyn Ann Aish.

Thank you for your fast resposnse. I looked-up your suggested pieces. Added them to a separate playlist and qued them. The sounds are very pleasant to listen to in repeat made. Sincerely, with appreciation.
This artist's skill is unquestionable. However, I should like to hear some unique compositions; something composed for this musical instrument, from non-western composers. Perhaps some personal favorites or compositions of their own or associates. A great sound.
I refer you to these other pieces (search YouTube): "First Look Inside" (original composition for Kalimba), "Box Pentatonic Kalimba" (improvisation), "Running With You, II" (original composition for guitar, transposed to kalimba), "KarimbaAm2" (original composition), "Bunga Utete" (traditional African piece for karimba), "Yekermo Sew" (modern African jazz transposed to karimba), and "Kalimba with Digital Delay" (improvisation on kalimba).
I played for about 10 years before I wrote or learned any real songs. BUT I now write books that use a great form of kalimba tablature, and I have clients who can play complex songs such as "Over the Rainbow" in a few weeks. Search YouTube for "erfurt rainbow kalimba" for an example. -Mark
loool I am sitting here with my kalimba and my black cat and we are watching your vid... we both love it, my cat is purring all the time. does your cat do so too?
Alright. I thought they might respond to the notes of the chord the instrument is tuned to, or something of that nature. This piece - all of your pieces, frankly - are great. I hope to be purchasing one of these instruments and trying this myself very soon.
Maurice White of EW&F used this kind of kalimba, the Treble Hugh Tracey Kalimba, in a different tuning. I think Philip Bailey uses a different kind of kalimba.
This one is probably 40 years old - before they starting installing pickups in them - however, this model, the Hugh Tracey Bb Treble Kalimba, comes optionally with a pickup. -Mark
The central opening is important, as it changes the resonant frequency of the box, and covering it again has a stronger affect at lowering the resonant frequency -- ie, giving you a deeper "wah wah" sound. -M
It is wonderfully easy to make beautiful sounds, but difficult to master in that you have to rewire your brain to think in both directions - down is to the center and up is both left and right. BUT, having rewired my brain successfully, you can now learn from the path I have blazed (or at least that is the idea). I've written several books that lay out songs like these ones and discuss what you need to do to understand this instrument. Not hard - just very different, with its own logic. -Mark
Wow that sounds beautiful! I have a Kalimba at home but I've hardly touched it. You inspired me to go look it out and give it another shot. You are very good at playing it!
Wow certainly a challage, although I did manage to score the first 3 notes ok LOL have to do like I do on the dombek and get my thumbs moving rhythmically. would also help to get the notes right too of course!!
Yes - retuned to have Bb == the root == the low note. I also scraped the paint off the tines and repainted it like the Alto (ie, with paint on the 2nd and 3rd lowest tines) - because the Alto is my "native kalimba". And yes, it has the two vibrato holes in the back. -Mark
I was just trying to describe my job, and the best I came up with was "To create a life of joy and beauty around the kalimba." I guess the positive shines through.

Is a Bb Treble kalimba better than a regular Treble kalimba for gospel songs? Ive been listening to both and can't tell the difference.

I can't really say - I like the Bb Treble better because it fits with what is already in my BRAIN. -Mark

Why are some of the (forgive my lack of knowledge about this instrument) metal rods colored red?

It just helps you keep your place on the instrument.

Why isn't the main opening on the side, where you could reach it without taking your thumbs off the keys?

It has two small openings on the back.
