I grew up with Barry Obama, same high school in Honolulu. And my aunt worked with his grandmother for years at the bank. He was two years older, we knew each other a little. Barry is half black, but the time and place he grew up in, there were VERY few blacks. On the other hand, whites weren't the majority either. Asians-- particularly Japanese-- were predominant in Honolulu. And Polynesians. Those of us who grew up with him understand the precise environment he's from--mixed-race Hawaii.

I grew up with Barry Obama, same high school in Honolulu. And my aunt worked with his grandmother for years at the bank. He was two years older, we knew each other a little. Barry is half black, but the time and place he grew up in, there were VERY few blacks. On the other hand, whites weren't the majority either. Asians-- particularly Japanese-- were predominant in Honolulu. And Polynesians. Those of us who grew up with him understand the precise environment he's from--mixed-race Hawaii.
