Johnny Paycheck is from my Hometown of Greenfield,Oh.I went to School with some of His cousins & my Mom went to School with Him.There will never be another country singer like Him.He was one of the Best!!.. :)
God.....who knew that he could reach those vocal levels with emphysema (did I spell that right?)
Anyhow, such a great singer/performer...I agree with the above post...these "kiddie" singers...Taylor Swift? C'mon!!! My God, she is a Billionaire now, but only because she is so business smart...sho targets kids....she is an absolutely horrible singer...flat, etc. Mr. Paycheck was REAL...
So many good or great country songs have been re-recorded but not this one makes wonder why maybe there isnt anyone out there that can do it.... beyond Mr. Paycheck this is a great country song one of the best and the only one to record it is Johnny
This has got to be one of the greatest country songs of all time.johnny really touches your heart strings with this one.rest in peace mr.johnny paycheck.
This was by all means my favorite Johnny Paycheck song, maybe my all time favorite country song (Old Violin). I feel so bad about Johnny's passing back in 2003, what a loss!!! We don't have good country music any more, just Hollywood type crap. Good job Johnny and Rest In Peace son.
One of his most touching numbers...how he is missed by those of us who appreciated his contributions to our musical worlds. Thanks for sharing this wonderful video of one of true greats in country music...
you can hear his soul in every word he sings. he was an onry cuss but he sure knew how to heal your heart with his music. i pray he is at peace and resting with our Lord! hope to hear you again some day John. thanks for endless years of true music inspiration!
the man is country music in all ways.he was one tough sob that took no crap off nobody.he is in the top 10 of all time great country music legends imo.we miss you everyday johnny, rip brother and fellow outlaw.
God have mercy on his soul. He had a beautiful voice. Maybe made some mistakes in his life but haven't we all? I give him mega credit as he sang this song. He was suffering with emphasema so bad he could hardly exhale but it didn't stop his efforts. God rest your soul Donnie.
That makes me feel so emotional and I bet im not alone , tears in the eyes? yup, like well performed country music should make us feel. What a great voice what a superstar, right up there with the greatest country music legends.
Agree. Tremenous talent wrapped up in a rough arond the edges package. But turned it around the last 10 years for sure. MIss this guy..never gets enough credit. Much better than anything thown out of nashville today.
Agree. Tremenoud takent wrapped up in a rough arond the edges package. But turned it around the last 10 years for sure. MIss this guy..never gets enough credit. Much better than anything thown our of nashville today.
Man this guy lived and worked about an hour from where I live down by Hillsboro, Ohio. My uncle said that he was a roofer and after lunch he would get his guitar out and wouldn't work haha. One hell of a country icon. Where are these today??
Someone mentioned that George Jones might have covered this song. I'm not aware that he ever did, but Daryle Singletary -- who bears a striking vocal similarity to George Jones -- did a really nice cover of "Old Violin" a few years back. Maybe that's what the person was thinking of?
I had the pleasure of seeing JP perform many years ago.I didn't even know he was gonna be there. The place was so small,I was about five feet from the stage.Another band had just left the stage when his band came on,I felt like I had moved to another world,oh the difference in the sound. He had a beautiful voice and I haven't heard truer words than those of the Outlaws Prayer.RIP--JP and thanks for the show!
Back in 1985 I was the drummer for a group that opened a show for JP, his real name is Donald, and this was the closing song to his last set. It was the most powerful moment I have ever experienced in my music career. The steel guitar part was both eerie and angelic. I didn't understand what this song meant back then, I just knew it was very profound. I understand exactly what it means today. Thanks for the talk JP. I miss you bud.
Johnny is from a very small town about 5 miles from where I live. Its kin of sad all they have is a small sign that says "Home of Johnny Paycheck." He deserves way more than that.
paycheck was one of the best artist i've ever had the pleasure of seeing and hearing.he also seemed to really appreciate and love his fans as much as we love him and his music.i've often wondered how anybody could start trouble with him to the point he shooits them,if anyone knows the details please shed some light on this for the ones of us who love him so much.thanks wayne.
No posers here. This guy was the REAL DEAL!!!! True and honest. He was a true artist and singer, not a copy with smoke and mirrors. Country music needs to go back and grab hold of itself and throw this McGraw, Rascall Flatts nasal, pro tooled to death, compressed, artificial, cookie cutter pop shit back to the stone age! RIP Johnny.
@879294970309 In other words cut the crap and get back to real country, singers like Paycheck and David Allan Coe were not the squeaky clean performers the establishment wanted,so they invented psuedo country ie. Brooks ,Mcgraw,Paisley,Urban etc.otherwise known as twats with hats.
@879294970309 absolutely couldn't agree more! If people only really knew what this guy's tlalkin' bout' with these voice tuners and artifficially compressed vocals, they wouldn't give these guys like Chesney and Mcgraw and them a second though......we miss Waylon, Johnny, Cash, Vern Gosdin and the real music back!
@879294970309 thhis dude knows exactly what he's talkin' bout' with these tuned, compressed to hell, artificial vocals that are the standard in country music nowdays. If the people had any idea what these folks like Chesney, McGraw and them sounded like just sitting in a chair with a flattop guitar in their hands they would never give another penny to hear them sing...we miss Waylon, Cash, Paycheck, and even Kris Krstofferson and Willie in country music today!
@879294970309 You are oh soooo right on the money. Todays "so called country" ain't country anymore ! It's been abused by the phonies & wanna bees . Some people today wouldn't know what good country was unless they listened to these guys . it's all about the sex and the money. Drn shame too. Guess we got the best of it , hey?
Master artist the great Mr Paycheck. Dearly loved and missed! This song has the raw burning power of... TRUTH. "You can't change the truth in the slightest way.... I tried." R.I.P., know that you have a piece of immortality.
You are so right, it was by far the best that Paycheck ever did. He wrote the song before he served his time in the CHillicothe, Ohio prison. Merle was a true friend of Paycheck and came there to perform with Johnny.

Great singer. Great song. What he did with his life was his choice. We need more of his style voices and music in the world today. This song could never be copied by anyone who could do as good of a job as he did. Ever. RIP, you are missed.
