@rgsibley Huge Meatmen fan! Tesco is great. Flint HC scene had some great bands too! The anti-establishment HC of the 80's was the only thing good about that decade. Now it seems like the 80's are being dragged back with hair metal; Reagan supply-side economics freaks, Smurfs, Thundercats, GI Joe, Transformers; redone; ugh. A perverse crystallization of the same old status quo recycling itself. No originality; no broke, awesome local scene. Just Avril Lavigne and Green Day, sad. That was fun.
Back then we had video huge video cameras on our shoulders connected to heavy VCRs which had to be carried around as well, so enjoy this great archival footage. It looks fucking great, that is to say it looks real. A real moment captured in time. Beautiful.
They were the only HC band where their fans memorized the lyrics and sang along on stage. It was rad at the time because no one else had such a commited, albeit tiny, fan base that literally knew all their songs.
thanks, they are, but I saw them this past year at riot fest and was kind of disapointed. Much respect to them regardless, but HR just isn't into it anymore.
indeed notice how no one is wearing vans in the videos kids now a days think vans are the quintessential hardcore punk shoe, bahaha back in the days everyone wore nikes or boots
haha I agree, although i do have a pair of vans myself, but never had the thought of being more hardcore in my mind when I bought them, so when did it become a law to wear specific things? Back in the day no one gave a fuck, why should anyone start now!?!?!
In the day, Vans were only distributed on the west coast and a very limited number of other shops. They did an active mail-order biz, but you had to go through effort to get them. Even more unusual, they were made in the USA. Unless they were canvas, Nikes were for rich kids.
Yeah I used to buy em out of a big box where they were all jumbled together, with the laces tied together to match a pair. One box was "Off the Walls" and the other were the "new" "Cabs".
Oh, PS. Did you ever see anyone slam dance at a Zep concert? And has Zep ever been on ground level with no barriers or guards AFTER they got famous? Time and place.
I hope to Christ that you are kidding! As to Zep being better, you cannot even compare the two different genres. Tat's like trying to compare Pollack to Da Vinci. Both AMAZING artists' in their own time. It's about time and place.
I don't think this is Detroit. They played Serbian Church in Detroit in 1983, and the set list for that show doesn't match this vid. Also, Steve Hansgen's not in this vid, but, they play Little Friend so it's at least 1982. There were only 6 shows without Steve in 1983, and there's only two that I don't have the set list for: Channel in Boston (6/12/83) and Ontario Theater in DC (6/16/83) but I don't think it's either of these. Anybody have any ideas about what show this might really be?
True, both bands were great in their own ways. I'm a Minor Threat fan, and I
ve never been a fan of Zep. I think Stadium rock and top 40 rock ruined rock badly. Underground hrdcore and punk is the truest form. No hero worship, it's all about the music and the meaning behind it.
music is a feeling that can be simple or complex but Delta shows us how simple it really is and Minor Threat who yodels broke the mold altogether. just go buy some R.L. Burnside dude.
all the Zeppelin hate on this page is quite comical . . . I mean if you don't like their music that is fine but I mean to say that Minor Threat is a better band is outrageous . . . Zep plays circles around these guys . . . as for preferences might as well keep them to ourselves 'cause it only makes people seem whiny and pretentious
this is one of the most badass videos ive ever seen just because for one thing this video was in my area and 2 its pretty cool too see what it was like back then because i wasnt able to live back then
I'll have you know that Minor Threat's song "It Follows" is what got me to stop collecting all Led Zeppelin Lp's and buy strictly American Hardcore for many many years. But my world came full circle when I got to see R.L. Burnside live twice before he died and some consider him last of the Mississippi Delta blues which is what Zep is.
I didn't swear 'em off. I had all the albums so I moved on. Try listening to my favorite Zeppelin tune which came out much later on the box set that I bought called "Travelling Riverside Blues" and try to tell me it's not Delta Blues!
that's because it's a cover . . . Travelling Riverside Blues was a Robert Johnson song . . . I didn't say they didn't play the songs I just said that they aren't neccessarily delta blues . . . my mistake on the swearing off thing
as for Zep being Delta Blues that's only half correct . . . they were a rock band that was heavily influenced by delta blues but to say they were is a bit of a stretch . . . sorry to get all picky but Blues is my favorite . . . but even punk on a linear line comes from blues cuz blues turns to rockabilly and rockabilly was the inspiration for the 77 punk thing and then to hardcore
and if that isn't good enough Iggy Pop started the Stooges trying to make a "white man's blues," I heard one time so there punk being the white man's blues besides blues is really the first DIY music
Less Zeppelin, more Sabbath. Sabbath inspired The Ramones, the Ramones inspired Motorhead, Motorhead inspired pretty much all of Hardcore, whether they know it or not.
yep but id say the stooges were more garage rock/protopunk .and the sex pistols inspired a generation of punk band to start up, while as the stooges had less of an impact on the movement.
minor threat is one of my favorite hardcore punk bands... i dont like any classic rock or anyother type of music actually other than old punk, and crust punk
