This music is timeless, & I can't thank enough my father who got me into Rush... I've being a fan for good 10 years or so. Most of of my friends or people I know only know a bit or nothing at all about Rush. The scariest thing is that all of them are Canadians and I wasn't even born there... So Canadian people don't even know their own good music . What's happening with our society, people, a massive musical degeneration and a submission to current low quality pop culture? I'm in tears...
Well I won the Guitar center drum off in 1995 in So Cal...I can play "Natural Science" to a T which is harder than this song. I did not say I could not play it. It's seeing other drummers try to play it...That say they can. They get the Hi Hat part right. But the right foot 5/4 then 6/4 is where they cant hang-You got the 6/4 & 5/4 backwords..Listen to the kick drum. 12345-123456
@JCAUPS1 i never said you couldn't play it lol, i'm just saying that if you've never seen another drummer do it, its probably because they couldn't get the 11/8 time signature with all the flourishes and accents correctly, my point was to just get time signature down and be able to play it correctly, then work on actual syncopation
I been playing drums for over 20 years and I have never seen a drummer play the pattern at @2:50 correctly...Drummers say they can play this song until they get to 2:50 and fall on thier ass. I would like to see a video of drummer that can play this to a T
@JCAUPS1 the song starts in 5/4 time signature and the part you're talking about doesn't sound particularly difficult, maybe the syncopation is hard to get down, but during the part that starts at 2:50 the beat altenates between 6/4 and 5/4 every other time, so its like 11/8... and after that at 3:56 it goes to 6/4 ... and the rest of the song is in 5/4 and 4/4, hard to play, yes, but count it out and then practice and it shouldn't be too hard to learn it, or at least it worked for me
I love a song with not one but multiple stories to tell ,I love the line "sadder still to watch die than ever to have known it"we all go through growing older and wishing we had been somewhere or done that something special and just never having the time or means to do it and by the time you do you're physically unable.I've always wanted to hang glide at Jackson hole but with 4 children and life tasks, you get the drift.Rush is a one of a kind.
This song reminds me so much of my Father, he was a teacher and spent his whole life shining light into the lives of others, he was the smartest man I ever knew and his knowledge was amazing. Now he has alzheimer's and only rarely is he the way he once was.
@karlmoles65 your welcome, have a listen to a song called long, long , long, by the beatles, not a well known one but one of their best , a beautiful number .
it is a fact that Rush got me through the 70's , The Beatles have got me through the noughtys i love them both more than i can say .i especially love this song .
For those who did not know, the artist Ben Mink played the electric violin in this song. Whether he played the entire solo or most of the solo I'm not sure. It always sounded to me that Alex and him layered it together. I tell you, that has to be one of the most incredible, emotion provoking solos I've ever heard in my life. I feel like I'm busting out of my skin. Still awesome after almost 30 years from the first listen.
Is there any RUSH song that sucks?... ONE? ... RUSH is one of the greatest bands of my lifetime. They belong up there with U2 for this generation... An amazing band!!!
Completely-Honestly: I walk around believing I'm "The One" often, yet Neil Peart is like a sleeping fox, he writes the lyrics and drums as if he has 2 minds and 8 limbs. Chris Martin of Coldplay may just be a distraction...I'm thoroughly intimidated by Neil. Please don't "usurp" my candy Neil.
Man, how I love this song. You didn't hear it played alongside their hits, but the lyrics, music, and sentiment is priceless. Nothing like an epic band with brains and bottomless heart.
LIke bands like Roxy, Talk Talk, Joe Jackson & their fans, Rush & we fans don't give a shit what self-absorbed pretentious criticts think. We're not snobs, we simply recognize something-a bit more so to speak. More important we feel what they're playing & what they're trying to convey. As a young aspiring artist I could "feel" exactly the emotion they were creating my 1st listen. If anything, now I only feel it more deeply, especially where the frantic race against time starts about 2:40 in.
Rush consist of the best musicians of our lives,,,Rolling stone also rated Steve Perry the lead singer for Journey #76 best rock vocalist. ????? Rolling Stone should only line bird cages....
LOL, consider the source! Do you think anyone puts any stock (at all) in what the knowledgeless queerbaits @ Rolling Stoned magazine say? Listen to how deep and meaningful Peart's lyrics are, and then listen to just about ANYONE elses' and when you're done laughing.....
This song is just breathtaking. The solo makes my soul feel like it's screaming, trying to escape my body.. It's shame there's so many people in the world who don't appreciate such beautiful music..
I wasn't a big Rush fan until I met my husband whose a drummer and idolized Neal Peart. I gained a whole new respect for the band of 3 that produces the amazing music that they do. This song is amazing!
@FuyuAkiWorld this is the great thig about rush...my dad, mom, and uncle loves rush. me and my brother love rush. my children (hopefully) will love rush. their greatness spans generations.
@Wingfieldr my dad always the retrospective tapes in our car, and as a kid, all i knew where those rush songs, me and him were always huge fans, then i drifted away from rush for a few years, but then i re-listed to those tapes and got hooked again, then i got their entire discography and actually introduced him to this song, now he loves it, along with many other hidden gems we've found... i'm 18, my dad is 58... so, likewise, nuff said....
While this song is not a great example of what Rush sounds like, it is prob my favorite song by them. Although what is Rushs' sound? Also, the waltz after the solo is uber rush!!!
Not necessary, My father in law lives with us now, he is 77 and he used to be able to lots of things that he can no longer do. I see it in his eyes when he gets mad. He wants to help, but just can't. But I respect your view as well.
@bassist1100 Ben Mink is a producer, and also an avid violin player. All the electric violin on this song is Mink's work, and it makes me want to get an electric violin so badly.
Signals is Rush in the greatest part of their synthesizer experimentation phase... and this song is a prime example of the fruits of that period.... great, and very under rated.... I would drop to MY KNEES if they ever played this in concert ....

I love how the guitar part in the chorus mimics, but doesn't overshadow the vibe of this song! And then...FUCK! Electric violins!? Mozart couldn't have farted a better progression! PURE GENIUS.
I'm analyzing and writing a presentation for these lyrics for a poetry project I'm doing for a lit course. Listening to them over and over makes me wonder if i really want to do what I'm going to school for, or if i should pursue my real passion no matter how unlikely it is that I'd be successful.
Alex's desperate sounding guitar solo....crying out with tears of rage is the perfect compliment to Neil's lyrics. I was a boy of 15 when this was released and thanks to their masterful work even I with my whole life in front of me felt what it was like to lose it.
Niel incorporates so much into his lyric. He speaks to the lonely, the frustrated. The trodden. But he also gives hope. Direction and Grace to the listener. And the mastery of what Gary and Alex do to bring that feel out in music, makes this a MUST not miss band. We're going this month!
This is one of those rare, absolutely perfect songs. The interplay of the guitar & electric violin at the end and their building crescendo, the increasing urgency of the drums, and among the best lyrics one of rock music's all time greatest lyracists has offered; all add up to a true & ageless masterpiece. I'm usualy one of those who rips the rampant hyperbole in world pop-culture now. But honeslty, I find this even more brilliant than the 1st time I heard it years ago. Rock as high art...
@jblan131 - sure, the bell tolls for thee... absolutely. Huge thanks to my high school English teacher who had me spend the bulk of my junior year dissecting Rush lyrics.
@j1simple so lucky you got to dissect Rush lyrics in high school in this day and age we don't get to experience that level of intelligence in high-school
Oh, my...! How many times in my life have I quoted this, "sadder still to watch it die, than never to have known it..." ! - I die for this song, truly.
When this album came out, New World Man, Subdivisions, and Analog Kid got all the radio play; I bought the album and discovered all the other tracks, like Chemistry, Digital Man, the Weapon. This track is definitely different from all the rest. This brings me back to when I was a teenager. I think none stirred me as intensely nor emotionally as this way under appreciated piece. I chose to come on youtube to hear it, but also to see what others think. It's great that others feel the same way.
may 19 th got ticket my super brother bought me for crimbo been listening to rush since (shit) 1977 and if i listen to this tune after not listening to it for a while i am a jibbering wreck
EU PROPRIAMENTE FALANDO E PENSANDO COMO UMA BANDA CHEGA A ESTA QUALIDADE SONORA DE GRANDE QUALIDADE E COM PRAZER QUE ESCUTAMOS UMA HARMONIA DIVINA QUASE CELESTIAL ,marcus vinicius - portugal - lourosa
@golfdom1987 I agree. I can honestly say I LOVE them all. There was a time when I thought a particular album might not have been what I though it should have been. I know now that it was ME that wasn't ready to get it. I look back at ALL of them and I see them as important chapters in Rush history book as well as my own. I can't wait for the next chapter!! LONG LIVE RUSH!!
@Lydirius I know exactly where your coming from, been a fan and listening to Rush for a long, long time, couldn't or didn't get Test for Echo or Vapour Trails at first, now I can't stop listening to them, aswell of course to the unparalelled back catalogue of their music/albums, 2011 should be great year for all Rush fans with the release of Clockwork Angels, simply cannot wait!
I love the outro of this song ,It hits me hard but the downside is that the producer thought it would be a good idea to do a volume fade out right when the Outro Synths hit at 4:37 . That's when I need it the most too hear those Synths which conclude the Mood of the song. I wish it was extended and didn't fade out. A similar Outro Fade when I need it the most happens on Beauty School off of Deftones Diamond Eyes Album. It fades the guitar outro right when I need it the most
OH my God. My whole life existance has been Rush. No other band can make me feel the way they do or change signatures like they can. This is my favorite record cover of all time. I'm such a private person but the truth of me has come out, anyone who really knew me or sees my face at their shows can see the love and how much they move me.
i was diagnosed with MS in 2004, since then i sold all my googys vette, z/28, bike but it took me years to sel l my Tamas. since i can"t play my beloved rush i figured why frustrate m yself. i will listen to rush for all the time i have left. the song "losing it" has a special meaning for me.God bless all you guys out there who "get it" long liverush and all you guys Ric/Gazoo
I've been listening to Rush for almost 30 years. I love'em. I've seen them live on every tour since Hold Your Fire. But to say they're bigger than the Beatles is absurd. I can think of dozens of bands influenced by Rush. But what band was NOT influenced by the Beatles? What music lover does not have a favorite Beatles songs. What human doesn't know a Beatles song. The only people who'd say Rush is bigger than the Beatles are children and adults with their hands on their ears.

I read in Neil Pearts book, Ghost Rider, that the lyrics " sadder still to watch it die, than never to have known it" Are from Ernest Hemmingway!

@jblan131 - sure, the bell tolls for thee... absolutely. Huge thanks to my high school English teacher who had me spend the bulk of my junior year dissecting Rush lyrics.
j1simple 10 months ago

The guitar solo at the end is my favorite guitar work of all time...
Even more than Pink Floyd's "Shine on you crazy diamond"
Signals is their best album in my opinion, coming close with Farewell to Kings

Any of Rush's albums are arguably their best album!
golfdom1987 1 year ago 6
@golfdom1987 I agree. I can honestly say I LOVE them all. There was a time when I thought a particular album might not have been what I though it should have been. I know now that it was ME that wasn't ready to get it. I look back at ALL of them and I see them as important chapters in Rush history book as well as my own. I can't wait for the next chapter!! LONG LIVE RUSH!!
Lydirius 1 year ago 2

Rush does two things that other bands don't: create masterpieces, and put meaning to their masterpieces.

Rush is that band that makes me feel like there's something more mysterious, mystical out there. And that you go searching for it.
twinkiepoodle 1 year ago 41
OH my God. My whole life existance has been Rush. No other band can make me feel the way they do or change signatures like they can. This is my favorite record cover of all time. I'm such a private person but the truth of me has come out, anyone who really knew me or sees my face at their shows can see the love and how much they move me.

@kellermoon Dude, the Beatles are overrated to the max. Deal with it.
