In order to get decent results in Yafaray, without the grainy look, you need to turn up the number of final gather samples. Try 64-128. Also increase the number of AA samples and passes.
Hi, I recently installed Yafaray and I've had a lot of trouble with it so far. When I use the settings you've provided, I still get a grainy, blue plane underneath my glassy object. It also seems to me that the only way to get caustics to appear is to use a very high-powered area light pointed straight at my object, and even that doesn't work with metal (plus it creates an ugly white circle on the plane). How can I avoid these problems? Thanks
the best light for caustics is a spot light, because it concentrates the photons. Don't use too much power. Oh and you must set the light type as spot in Yafaray.
Just download and install Yafaray. For problems see the Blender console. You need the correct version of Python and after this you can use Yafaray. For the animation I used Blender 2.48 and Yafaray 297. All works fine for me under Windows Vista. You can get more professional help in the Yafaray forum.
I did some tests with Indigo 1.1.18 and LuxRender some time ago. I am not so happy with the Indigo results and I am still waiting for a stable LuxRender release.

Perhaps you need more photons.

On my homepage you can find informations about settings with some images. At the moment i have no time to write a tutorial, but perhaps later.

The first part is rendered with Yafaray and the second part of the scene is rendered with the blender internal renderer.
You have to go to the Shading-Tab (F5) and select Wire. That's all.
