@kylemcswagger Yes they do. Brackish water is the ideal environment if you want them to live a natural lifespan. Otherwise they will die prematurely. They live in brackish water in their natural habitat
@f1shbone Thanks! I do have all the stuff you said & gave them more land access a couple of days ago. How did you get your vacuum to work? Mine has like this round end on it & I cant figure it out, it's the same as yours I think or close to it. Any tips? Thanks! (:
@MsCavaliers2 The whole idea behind the vacuum working is the tank sitting much higher than your bucket. What kind of vacuum do you have? What is the brand?
I see other people are asking if it's brackish water, do you have a full view of your tank? I believe you, i just want to have a less boring tank, get other fish that won't bother the crabs and the crabs won't bother them, and i just got a gravel vaccum and it doesnt work with brackish water! It's just a basic gravel vac i got at petsmart and i need more water :| how big is your tank and how high is your water level? Much appreciated! I like your tank setup too! (:
@MsCavaliers2 This is the only shot of the tank that I have. It is a 5.5 gallon although I recommend a minimum 10 gallon tank for one or two crabs. Since there are not many fish that live in brackish water, you will most likely have to make it exclusively a crab tank. Don't forget to read online some more info on their requirements. You MUST give them access above water, to a land area of some sort, otherwise over time they drown.
what do i do? do i take it out? you'd think it'd be healthy for him to eat it, but i can't bear the thought of that. please reply as SOON as u can! ppl said t would be healthy to have a partner, so why did he eat her! was her skin softer after she molted or what? was it might fault? was it my fault that he wouldn't eat? i feel responsible. please reply as soon as u can!
(continued VV) and i think my tad bit smaller one (my new one) was a female cause she had littler claws and they were more red, and my dark male (he has some pretty huge claws) the next day after i changed their tank i looked in their just now and saw the shell of my female. that morning i thought it was actually her, but it was her shell. i found her and she was half eaten. :( what happened? my male never did eat well, even if i dropped the food in front of his face. my female ate a lot! help!!
I have two red claws in my tank. These guys love plants and they eat all of them up. I dont mind it, but at the same time i want a planted tank as well. Any suggestions on plants that they might leave alone? Thanks.
Marsh Fiddlers are my. favorite crab. I've had red claws before and i didn't like them as much. The male fiddlers make these funny little gestures with their claws and mine is basically tame. He doesn't flee when I stick my hand in anymore. The females are more skittish though.
usually by the size of the claws. if they are larger, it's a male. If smaller, a female. There is a LOT of info on the internet about how to care for them, I strongly recommend reading some. For example, they need brackish water, not freshwater. The tank also needs to be cycled.
@f1shbone I am so devastated. remember me? the one u really helped get my tank all right? well, I had my one crab, cena, doing perfectly fine and very healthy, but i was eager and heard people say that they do a lot better with a partner. So I asked the pet store lady (she was the owner so i was guessing she was educated on this stuff, plus, she seemed like she knew what she was talking about) but a month and a half later i changed the tank yesterday *almost ran out, i will continu in dif comnt^
What size aquarium is yours in? I am beginning to set up a half and half aquarium (land and water) brakish, for red clawed crabs. How big do they get? How many can go in a 29gal aquarium? It's supposed to be half land and half water ,right?
It's recommended at least 10 gallons to 2 crabs at most, with plenty of hiding places so they don't get aggressive and territorial. In a 29g, if you divide it, I would get 3 females and no more. The tank in the video is a 10 gallon tank and I also have a 75 gallon paludarium (half sand, half water)
The two live in different environments. The crab needs brackish water and the gourami won't survive in it. So you won't have a problem since you can't have both in the same tank ;)
ALL fiddler and red claw crabs are brackish water crabs, no exception. They will survive in freshwater but their lifespan will be severely shortened. They also need access to land or somewhere above water, otherwise they will slowly drown if you keep them submerged. Please do the research on these critters
Lol i did so much research before i got some of these and the pet shop just like tore it up and pissed on it cus they said they dontr need salt land or nothing just like a guppy
yet they have crabs the size of your fist about 2 years old?
The crabs can PUT UP with such conditions for a while, but not indefinitely. Don't judge their environment by what you see at shops because a)those are temporary set-ups and b)they don't stay at shops for long, they get sold. You know what they say, the truth is in the pudding. You can choose to follow the info online or ignore it completely. And you'll see for yourself how well and long your crabs will live
Yeah thanks but what i'm trying to say they were on show not for sale and have been there for a good year in freshwater no land so they had been there the WHOLE TIME
You can find all this info online if you do a simple search. The water should be heated to around 74-78*F. One of those Whisper 50w heaters should work just fine
No offense but you should have done the research beforehand. Red claws are brackish not freshwater like plecos and they also need access to land above water to breathe and occasionally dry off. Return your crab or setup a good tank for it.
but i hardly know anything about them so is it true that they need a land part in the tank? becouse the water in my tank is full of oxygen for them so do they still need it?
and what do they eat? and in wich tempratur do they live?
You do NOT put grains daily because salt does NOT evaporate and you would end up raising the salinity untill you kill the crab. The proven healthy amount of salt is exactly two perfectly leveled tablespoons of marine salt per gallon. MARINE salt, not aquarium salt. I recommend Instant Ocean salt, one of the best brands out there. PM me for more details.
quick question , i bought a red claw crab but it seems to stay out of the water, why is that and also what kinda wwater fresh or salt plz reply to my comment page
hi, i have an fresh water aquarium with half land and half water with 3 fire newts and 3 red clawed crabs. my crabs have been fine although its fresh water.
You wanna bet they won't live more than a few months, a year at most? Red clawed crabs actually live to 2-4 years. There's no way around it. They need brackish water. Alas, your newts would die in brackish and I'm affraid they might not be the best tankmates for crabs.
Wow. Defensive lil' thing! Glad Barniby isn't that aggressive! He's my Halloween crab. Oh and the other comments. I eat crab but could never kill one. They're too cute!
The answer is absolutely not. They NEED access to air and they NEED brackishwater, NOT freshwater. If you don't provide access to air, they slowly drown over time. Also, without access to brackish, it weakens them and they will only live for about 4 to 6 months.
The short answer is yes. Fiddlers and red claw crabs are the most popular and they both need brackishwater for their long term well being. There are crabs out there that don't need brackish and would be fine with just a dish of saltwater, but they are next to impossible to find in stores.
You are taking great care of your crab! Most videos are just of their crabs in freshwater without any land space thinking that they have a good setup.
Nah, she knows it's feeding time and she's being ... crabby. They're scavengers so as soon as something moves in the tank, she gets curious.
