Gotta say that nobody does it like barbara! I like jennifer and all but I am not big on how long she holds the notes and completely over does it. A bit annoying for me, sometimes its better to keep it short and sweet.

The original singer of the song, however, was Reri Grist who played the role of Consuelo...Maria sings a few lines of the song in the movie version played by Natalie Wood..

I agree with Aloha. It's all a matter of personal preference. I love the belters like Jennifer. I think she really sings this song. I don't like the small voiced singer that may sound pretty but has no guts/power/raw passion. But I know not everyone is into that. Maybe it has to do wtih what we are used to. I am used to and love big voices.

Okay...I am all for personal style and individuality but then there is a time to respect the original composition to some degree without competing against the original recordings...something I have noticed whit the new generation...LOUD does not mean great...LOUD shows no control and oversinging like this in time will destroy her gift...Both her and Fantasia need better coaching and mentors to teach them the elements of classical song styling...

Yes, Rachelle was/is queen, along with Patti. Rachelle was mostly known for jazz and can play piano just as well! I do agree that the female singers of yesteryear(70s, 80s) were tops. But there are a few now who can hum. No, they are the exception but they are there nevertheless. And I think Jennifer is one of those exceptions. She just needs to regulate her vocals a bit and create those dynamics she is truly capable of. Mad props to Jenn!!!!

As far as range it seems like Beyonce has a better lower voice and if you don't think so listen to halo lol, but anyways. I also think that technically Beyonce can sing higher than jhud but only in head voice. I think she has hit like a high d. But jhud has more power in her belt. Beyonce can't belt but so high while keeping a consitent sound while Jhud can. The thing is both have their faults but we love both. Another thing is becuz Bey has done so much pop stuff we forget she is a good singer.
Actually Jennifer Hudson has a better range in both lower and higher registers. Jennifer's Spinto tessitura allows her to reach lower notes, but she indeed is a dramatic soprano (whereas I would Beyonce's vocal range between that of a mediocre soprano and a mezzo-soprano). Halo is actually one of my favorite songs, but it is nothing special. She actually changes pitch when she says 'sound', which is all in all a sign of strain. They both have pros and cons, Beyonce having the edge in mainstream.
Alright I have seen a lot of the Jhud v Bey comments and my take on it as a vocalist is that Jhud is a amazing singer who like some have said only come around rarely. She has power in her voice and control. What people mistake for her lack of control is her lack of movement. Jhud can't or i'll say doesn't do fast melismatic lines or runs. Bey is also an amazing singer who can do alot of things with her voice. He r voice is clean and good for melismatic movement. That is why she is good for pop.
I'm proud of Jennifer Hudson. I didn't agree that she was voted off back in her American Idol era. Just shows that the people and judges can be wrong. Always happens with actors too. Jennifer believed in herself and I'm glad she wasn't discouraged. I believed in her back then. Look at her soaring now. This is a great version of this song. I love this West Side Story ballad.
Oh my gosh!! That performance was phenomenal!!!! Gave me chills!!! Her voice is so strong and powerful. I don't think she oversang the song...it requires rang and ability to hit high notes and she has the pipes to pull it off!!! EXCELLENT!
I don't think this is as "loud" as everyone thinks it is. The audio quality is just so bad on this video, it makes it seem very shrill. She is an incredible vocalist. I adore her.

Kind of amazing that anyone who knows about singing could attempt to compare Beyonce to Jennifer Hudson. Hudson does have some control issues, but her voice is simply off the charts. Beyonce has a nice voice. Hudson's is a voice that only comes along every so often. There's no comparison between the two.

That's because she has such an incredible range...she started in a lower octave and ended up being able to make it her own--reaching into and exploring the song in a much higher octave. It made the song both fixed and fluid...timeless, yet timely. What a talent!

FYI PENTECOSTAL is another form of Gospel Music.(just in case)..Powerful Gospel singers still need to control the microphones as to assault the listening audience...A GOOD COACH would educate Jennifer and Fantasia to this inside tip!!!

This is nothing, you must come from this era, you should have grown up in the 70's & 80's singers like this were normal, I love Jennifer, but Ive heard better. This was how the typical black woman sung! I could name endless singers, some you've probably never heard of. even today, she's good but cannot sing better than Rachelle ferrell or Patty, for ex, but she is better than the singers on the market today! Yes, Rachelle was/is queen, along with Patti. Rachelle was mostly known for jazz and can play piano just as well! I do agree that the female singers of yesteryear(70s, 80s) were tops. But there are a few now who can hum. No, they are the exception but they are there nevertheless. And I think Jennifer is one of those exceptions. She just needs to regulate her vocals a bit and create those dynamics she is truly capable of. Mad props to Jenn!!!!

As far as range it seems like Beyonce has a better lower voice and if you don't think so listen to halo lol, but anyways. I also think that technically Beyonce can sing higher than jhud but only in head voice. I think she has hit like a high d. But jhud has more power in her belt. Beyonce can't belt but so high while keeping a consitent sound while Jhud can. The thing is both have their faults but we love both. Another thing is becuz Bey has done so much pop stuff we forget she is a good singer.

Actually Jennifer Hudson has a better range in both lower and higher registers. Jennifer's Spinto tessitura allows her to reach lower notes, but she indeed is a dramatic soprano (whereas I would Beyonce's vocal range between that of a mediocre soprano and a mezzo-soprano). Halo is actually one of my favorite songs, but it is nothing special. She actually changes pitch when she says 'sound', which is all in all a sign of strain. They both have pros and cons, Beyonce having the edge in mainstream.

Alright I have seen a lot of the Jhud v Bey comments and my take on it as a vocalist is that Jhud is a amazing singer who like some have said only come around rarely. She has power in her voice and control. What people mistake for her lack of control is her lack of movement. Jhud can't or i'll say doesn't do fast melismatic lines or runs. Bey is also an amazing singer who can do alot of things with her voice. He r voice is clean and good for melismatic movement. That is why she is good for pop.

I'm proud of Jennifer Hudson. I didn't agree that she was voted off back in her American Idol era. Just shows that the people and judges can be wrong. Always happens with actors too. Jennifer believed in herself and I'm glad she wasn't discouraged. I believed in her back then. Look at her soaring now. This is a great version of this song. I love this West Side Story ballad.

So many performers have to add that unnecessary riffing--how-wow-ow-wha-bay-ah-bay-ah-bee-yahhaha... Jennifer sings it perfectly from the heart. A beautiful voice that doesn't rely on that show-off-out-of-tune, superficial "American Idol" crap and the schmaltzie--"How-Wow" riffing. Kind of amazing that anyone who knows about singing could attempt to compare Beyonce to Jennifer Hudson. Hudson does have some control issues, but her voice is simply off the charts. Beyonce has a nice voice. Hudson's is a voice that only comes along every so often. There's no comparison between the two.

I disagree with you that Hudson voice has no control and off the charts. Its a rare soulful voice that we havent heard in a long time among this generation. Her voice is captivating.Beyonce's voice which to me is a peforming voice need not be that great u just need to perform more than u sing and do some up bits. Try and listen to Hudson and tell me where and how long ago have u heard this kind of voice. Dont expect her doing 'jumping jumping jump' or 'same my name'or'Bills.' Oh I love Beyonce.

That's because she has such an incredible range...she started in a lower octave and ended up being able to make it her own--reaching into and exploring the song in a much higher octave. It made the song both fixed and fluid...timeless, yet timely. What a talent!
