Thanks Mark. I was so inspired by this video, I rushed right out and got some Rain-X and started shooting. It took a few tries to get the composition I wanted, but eventually I think I got a few great shots. I posted four of them in a set on my Flickr.com page. Search Tango Juliet Photography.
@TangoJulietPhoto Just to let you know, I tried a general search for your name and couldn't find anything. I had to go to "Contacts," "People search" to find your pics. I like the one of the woman's face. Kinda freaky.
@pef23 Hmm. Not sure why you had such trouble, but to be honest, I don't post much there. The face is from the cover of a book called "Hollywood Portraits - Classic Shots and How to Take Them".
@90jeepgirl feel free to message me anytime if you've got a question. i don't consider myself to be a pro, but i have been shooting for some years with anything from toy cameras to remote fired strobe setups and everything in between. i only wish the internet had been what it is now when i was starting out :)
@slovakianchic If you go to your local auto-supplies shop and ask for something to help the water run off the windscreen of your car they will suggest something like the above. When I used to work washing cars we would also occasionally use high shine polish (meant for paintwork) on the windows to make the water run off better. When the water has nowhere to run you will get this kind of effect. The polish must be completely removed, preferably with soft mutton-cloth or something similar.
Same thing which makes droplets on your car rather than fields of water. This makes it easier to keep your car clean. So I guess RainX works in the same way. It coats the window/glass to make it easier to keep them clean.
@slovakianchic Rainx is a product that leaves a kind of film on your glas or carwindscreen, a film on which the raindrops don't stick, when you drive your car in the rain with a rainx on you windscreen you'll notice the raindrops will flow away wihtout using the wipers.
This may sound like a stupid question to most on this site, but I'm just an amateur photographer and don't have all the great equipment that Mark does, so my question is, can I recreate the same type of images without having the remote flash and macro lens?
@90jeepgirl i dont have a macro lens or a remote flash but dude he is useing very simple stuff in these videos its just a cartoon and a glass and water and u need to be kinda creative to have a really nice picture without useing expensive stuff .. =)
@90jeepgirl before i moved up to pocket wizard remotes for my off-camera strobes, i was pretty happy using flash cables. they come in loads of different lengths and can be had for a reasonable price.
you'll want to know the sync-speed on your camera (look online or in the manual) and be sure not to go over it if you're manually setting your aperture/shutter speed and flash settings.
feel free to ask any more questions you may have - we all started somewhere :)
@bertomartin Thanks for the information! I'm just trying to create some different images on a tight budget without having to buy anything additional. I'm in school right now and images like this that I can create will go a long way with my assignments for my classes. I appreciate your taking the time to answer my question and above all not make me feel stupid. Any other ideas that don't involve buying additional equipment would be greatly appreciated.
@90jeepgirl :) creative experimentation is the soul of photography. try using any bright light you have- try using something to direct the light towards what you're shooting - a sheet white paper or posterboard folded into a cone works. just remember the angle of incidence he mentioned to keep the light from reflecting directly into your lens.
didn't mean to imply you had to buy anything - i shot from 1999 through 2008 using only available light. was great - more lights just add options.
@bertomartin Thanks for the info. I know you didn't imply I had to buy anything. I'm just trying to gather some info so I know where to go from here. You've been an invaluable help. It does help to have someone who has been where I am and knows what I'm going through. Any other help is greatly appreciated.
@90jeepgirl i was also assuming you had an off camera light source. you could use any bright fixed light, technically, and play with your camera settings in aperture priority or full manual mode to get a similar effect. if you're looking for your first off camera strobe, i can't say enough good things about the LumoPro LP160 quad sync manual flash. was my first, and now i have three in my camera bag :)
@perenialperson would be 1/60th or something similar, since it's flash it wouldn't be over 200th of a second and depending on the light in your room, not slower than 1/60th
well the droplets make u think of a cold frosty beer or soda add to that the blue red and white automatically u will go for pepsi and red cocacola and green mountain dew or Heineken thats what i felt not just pepsi :)
Hey! I love the way you've used the MacBook Pro to frame the onscreen part of the clip. Great stuff as always!
