This was posted like a bazillion years ago but going to ask anyway and see if I get a response.. Did you make his perch yourself or did you buy it? It looks awesome. I don't clip my parrots wings but you commented that yours never learned to fly.. mine took a crash course in flying when we were outside in Alaska and something frightened him.... He flew off lucky I got him back but even with his wings clipped he could fly and I liked it better not to be clipped. I use a lead now when outside
Our jungle gym is homemade out of PVC and all 4 of our Macaws love to hang out on it. Indoors they're kept apart in seperate cages, but spring thru fall they get to hang out together in the backyard. At least one has flown FREE around the woods in the past (not clipped), but the others must have heard the terrible tale as they've decided it's best to stick close to home - even when given the chance. They all get clipped now, so it's not like any are vain about it. Better safe than sorry!
@dawyno Wow you were lucky.. Mine has gotten out once since then. We now live in England in the middle of town and he landed on the street. I was running down the middle of the street cause a car was coming and I was totally freaking out. When he flew off in Alaska his wings were clipped and you are correct about the better safe then sorry. Do Macaws make the dust like African Greys and Cockatoos? I am allergic to the dust. Thanks for answering my questions:D
Wow - that's morbid, ignorant, and not at all how you clip a bird!!! Actually you trim a small section of the feathers (avoiding the newer growing "blood feathers"). When done properly it's like getting your hair cut.
People have good reasons for clipping wings. My father had a parakeet that didn't have clipped wings. He ended up flying into a wall and broke his neck.
Clipping wings doesn't hurt the bird at all. They don't have nerves in the feathers you cut.
This bird was born in captivity (not wild-caught), so he never really learned to fly.
He's had opportunities (being outside without being clipped), but never tried. In general wild-caught birds often do like to fly, so clipping flight feathers is highly recommended when taking them outside.
What a happy bird. Nice gym you got there. Did you build it yourself? How long did it take? We're paranoid about letting our birds to touch things outside the house catching disease from other birds from their poo.
lol i have also had my parot since i was 5 im 13 now lol we where playing a computer game called starcraft and she learnt her first words from that game i had only had her for one year at that point and she was only 1 years old. she is right now 9 years old :) shes one wounderful gift but they are really exspencive to buy so are thier food and cages so you really must be careful.
haha you know how in combat on the game they say stuff like "lets go" or "ahhh" or even when they have the conversations on the game haha she picked it all up from me and my older siblings playing it all the time. she still screams it out too!
Lol i have a blue and gold parot too. they are really nice to talk to and they are really fun to play video games with :P My parot her name is babe... she loves to dance to hip hop all parots dance like that too. i also have a mixed bread he is really awsome. :)
Macaws have been said to live for up to 100 years; however, an average of 50 years is probably more accurate. The larger macaws may live up to 65 years.
It's a life-long commitment, as many outlive their human keepers.
Side note: You also need to be careful with the language they "learn" (ie. bad words, an old flame's name, a loud burp, etc.) or you'll hear it FOREVER! Fortunately ours only burps!
He is in great shape for 17 y.o.Is a very beautiful gym.I never saw one like that, very creative .Sorry hear about his beak.I love macaws my dream was to have one but unfortunate with our life stile is not posible for now , we get transfer every 3 years to diferent country for my husband job and macaws is out of question for now. Macaws can realy leave that long if you give fresh diet and give then space to play like you do.Is a life time friend.
Thanks! His "papa" made the play gym quite a few years ago, but it's light-weight, rock-solid, & it lets the birds safely hang out & play together for hours. Of our 4 macaws, this one is by far the sweetest. He's 17 years old & loves to dance; so he makes everyone smile when we take him to a party or concert in the park. Poor thing just broke the tip off his beak off last week ~ tramatic event until we got it cauterized, but now he's healing just fine.
I wish my parrot danced. All he does is mimic my laugh and says "Shutup, idiot."

I think they cut the wings just under the muscle so that they cant fly... Cruel in a way. Beautiful bird anyhow!

I had the same reaction from people when I told them my cockatiel's wings are clipped.
It's not cruel at all and can save them from getting lost or hurt.
You have a very beautiful parrot.
