"Had those who ratified the Due Process Clauses of the Fifth or Fourteenth Amendment known the components of liberty in its manifold possibilities, they might have been more specific. They did not presume to have this insight... times can blind us to certain truths and later generations can see that laws once thought necessary and proper in fact serve only to oppress. As the Constitution endures, persons in every generation can invoke its principle in their search for greater freedom."
Its happened in 31 states because religious groups who gather at least once a week have voted it down. Its like suggesting no one was upset when Bush was reelected because he won..only the 60 million people who voted against him. So if 99 people vote for same sex marriage and 100 vote against, it cant be ridiculous right?
It isn't as close as 99 vs 100. Look at some of the margins of victory... it passed in bellwether Missouri by 72% of the vote... and in Ohio, the microcosm of the USA, it passed by 62% of the vote. Not even close!
Yes on 1 passed in Maine with 52 percent which is obviously very close. Prop 8 passes in Cali with 52 percent. My two examples are the exact same are yours because I offered 2 "blue states" and you gave me 2 "red states"....
My point is I have the right to call it ridiculous because in those 2 states it passed almost 100-99. There are enough voters in Maine for samesex marriage but it's impossible to motivate them because it's not that big a deal, no issue, they say do what you want. But we are fighting the church so it's an impossible battle because they are so involved and motivated every last one goes out and votes as a family. Your lookin at at least a 75% young people approval, only a matter of time.
Thing about young people... they grow up! lol. Seriously, don't think that their political ideologies will stay the same forever, especially as they grow older, they become more religious... same thing with people when they marry and have children... and when the excesses of youth pass them by...
No way that comment makes any sense. Almost suggesting young people are too immature to understand if they actually want to allow same sex marriage because they will grow up!""... Let me ask my dad of he still believes blacks should be allowed to vote and on and on and on, every generation has a group of young people who change something. In 30 years when I'm 50, there will most likly be a group of kids trying to change something and I will be against it, the cycle doesn't stop.
There IS no "cycle." This is wishful thinking on your part, driven by a self-serving narrative of history. And your comparison of gays to blacks is an insult to the former.
Since you are so interested in supposed trends, let me illustrate another trend, that of religious people outmultiplying more secular ones, and the percentage of hispanics (heavily anti-gay marriage) is growing. Although it is true I have these two factors on my side, I don't display the smug arrogance of "certainty."
You can call it a "smug arrogance of certainty" but history is very clear here.
We should exchange emails and if there is no change in 20 years you can email me and say I told ya so. I'm confident enough to say I would be sending out the email though.
Past results are no guarantee of future performance... which is good news for you, because history has shown that 31 times out of 31, the American people have voted a certain way. Also, just because you claim history shows something does not mean you are correct. Look at Marx; he predicted many things that did not come to pass, such as communism appearing in developed countries first. It didn't work like that... in fact, Communism itself did not play out at all... and neither will your ideas.
Actually there is some things which show gay marriage might actually take a huge step back and may not even be a possibility for at least 20 years. Like i have said your best bet is to just live your life and find happiness in yourself.
Thanks! That's a nice comment coming from you! LOL!! Well, I don't agree. I have seen a lot change in the last 30 years (yes, I am old!) and progress is slow but steady. I married my husband in 2006. Never thought I'd see the day!
The biggest reason are the courts. Gays have totally relied on the courts to push for same-sex marriage. If you see records, you will see many extreme liberal positions like abortion and gay marriage were pushed during an opportunistic time when a certain liberal majority was in place. Kinda like New Jersey now.
On the other hand 31 out of 31 times in U.S. history and not limited to geography (unlike blacks), the American people have rejected gay marriage.
One example is California, while the gays are trying to get yet another public vote, it will most likely lose and its only option is U.S. Supreme Court, which at this moment would reject gay marriage.
Like the abortion issue, public opinion has surprisingly more pro-life. A lot of it has to do with cultural experiment and observation to see how a policy was wrong
Further, gay marriage hangs by a thread even in states it is legal and could be abolished and could take a while to get it back.
Can anyone tell me who's convincing people that they ought to be able to vote on the rights of a minority through tyrannical majority? And, what is there sincere legal logic behind this thought process?
You def. need a history lesson, rather than vomiting-up Maggie Gallagher's backwards talking points. Marriage has never been, and it is not now, the hallmark of a societal decision. And, to say that declares, quite offensively, that the Gay community are not a part of society nor a sociological make-up of the USA or the world. Indeed, in antiquity, we were an integral part of society, like the Shamans of the Chuckchee and sought by men as married spouses! I could go on ad nauseum!
Whomever my parents were has nothing to do with the subject in ANY way. In fact, how would YOU like to be barred from the person you'd PERSONALLY decided to spend YOUR life with while they were dying? Whom *I* decide to build MY family with is absolutely NO concern of yours. It's about being treated equally UNDER THE LAW, without churches and religious fanatics trying to spy into our private lives, much like the Nazi SS did. You needn't approve of anything! Just let us live our OWN lives!
Let me tell you what needs to happen. Someone should get a same-sex marriage where it's allowed and then move to a state that doesn't recognize that marriage and get married right then to someone of the opposite sex. Wouldn't that be bigamia? The U.S. Supreme Court would have to intervene.
Why because it wont be taught it Maine schools? lol Kids learn about sex and marriage and all that jazz from 2 places..Parents and friends. Unless your a hardcore bible preaching homophob, your nephews will be brought up knowing that homosexuality IS ok. And thats simply because of the world we live in now. 90+% of young people coming from a non-hardcore religious setting doesnt give a shit what a gay person does. We simply dont care. Once the majority of older folks die off, things will change.
You are absolutely right! It's sad that we have to wait until older generations die off! It is hard to actually change someone's mind about this... perhaps if they discover they have a gay child themselves. That's an eye opener!
Actually waiting for a new generation to accept gay marriage may not happen.
Look at the abortion issue. Abortion has been around the U.S. for a generation and the amazing thing is more people are actually against abortion now.
The problem for gays, what they cannot understand is that they see it as a civil rights issue, when it is not. It is a moral issue and most see it that way. That is why it may never happen.
It is only a "moral" issue, if you want it to be one. Every medical institution in the US, and the Western world declares that sexual orientation is perfectly natural, normal, and cannot be changed; and to try and change it would be psychologically DAMAGING!!!
Hate to break it to you, but, despite your vote, your nephews will STILL be taught that there isn't one thing wrong about being gay. it's called a progressive cultural value maintained by his own generation!
So you can't get social recognition for your sexual inversion. But I know it makes you happy. It is your coping mechanism. You want society to accept it so that you don't have to undo your sexual inversion and face your psychologial demons and fears. You thought at one time that "gay" brought order to your confused mind. But what you really did was place the psycholgical burden to change off of yourself and onto society. WHY? because it is easier to change society than to change yourself. Loser
Fozziebear. In the nicest way possible, we are trying to say marriage is between a man and a woman. 31 out of 31 times, we have tried to you tell this.
This question is a matter of human rights and it should never, never appear on a ballot to begin with. We should not be allowing the majority to vote on the rights of a minority. This should be left for the courts. If everything was decided by voters, we'd be back in the dark ages.
Gay marriage is not a human right anymore than prostitution. If you want to engage in perversion feel free to do so, you have that right. But marriage is man + woman. Oh and even worse the "gays" want the children now. HA!
People voted based on what they believed was best for society. Apparently people believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. Look I want to drive on the left side of the road but it is illegal. Society said drive on the right side. I accept this.
heeyyy I have an idea! since being black and liking other dudes are exactly the same, how 'bout you copy the black civil rights march in the 60s by using God&Faith to gain rights.
instead of protesting Him out of marriage, how 'bout you use His word to prove why homosexual marriage is juuuust fine! or better yet!!?!?!!? you could have your "equality" signs with 1 Corinthians 7:2 written alllll over it!!! hmmm....
Yet still, many place a simple civil contract out of a group of people's reach, simply because they feel they don't deserve it.
How is that equality? How can you claim everyone is equal when it's blatantly obvious that some are afforded better protection through the federal government and the state?
If you've read up on the legal privileges, protections, and benefits of being married, even if only recognized state-wide, you'd understand the limitations are unjust.
African americans had the same right to ride the bus way back in the day, except they had to stay at the back. You're basically asking why they should have cared, since they got where they were going anyways.
We can be happy without having gay marriage legal, but we'd be happier if the government gave us equal protection.
Then why must you be upset if the government accepts same sex marriage? Why cant you guys move on and let these guys do whatever the hell they want. If you dont like it, change the channel.
You Do realize, don't you, that ALL of the arguments being used against Marriage Equality today were, literally, used to stop racial integration, as well as interracial marriage (down to the specific wordings)! Think on that...
Ask our parents what? Both of my parents are almost 50 is both support gay marriage, and my grandmother because one of her sons is gay. Shes had the joy of knowing whats its like to know a gay person and in her words "its a delight!"
And why wont you accept my video as a response to your video? Your represent one side I represent the other, both of us have opinions that we believe so I say accept my video response and let people decide for themselves. Nothing wrong with that.
You do realize that ALL of the arguments used for gay marriage could be used for adult incest, prostitution, bigamy, polygamy, beastiality, and eerily even man-boy love?
ugh...and this is precisely why my Pagan forebears should have stood up to Rome and brought down the powerful Christian Church! My Pagan elders would have had NO qualms with one's NATURAL sexual orientation!
Actually Roman history proves how homosexual relations are usually the sign of a nation's decadence and its inevitable implosion.
Like Ive said if you don't believe me look it up for yourselves. And I'm not even referring to the Bible.
To put it bluntly the end of Rome saw freak-show behavior, even to the point where man-boy relationships were legal and a man owning a boy sex slave was ok.
Same reasoning is always used. Rome was more advanced and evolved as we would like to believe.
Very similar arguments were used to prevent women gaining the right to vote, too:
"It would be a slippery slope," "it would destroy traditional marriage and change the traditional definition of roles for men and women" "It would confuse children" etc.
And let's not forget that familiar chestnut of circular reasoning (wait for it): Women can't vote because only men can vote, and that's the way it's always been.
No to same-sex marriage. Support a federal constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriages.

Gay marriage is not right anymore than prostitution, adult consentual incest, adult polygamy, etc.
Marriage is different in that society comes together and decides which form of institution it will uphold.
If we label any friendship/sexual relationship as marriage, we are just stamping approval instead of looking out for society.
