Coolie is phonetically derived from the chinese phrase for "manual laborer," ie construction workers, the guys who help you move your 60 inch flatscreen etc. The connotation associated with the name is that you're poor, have nowhere to go and wouldn't be ashamed to work with your hands to make living.
