She is, in fact, an alto. However, she is not the typical alto...she can climb the heights of soprano but her vocal resonance lies in the contralto range. She has learned to work her high range and sound beautiful in it, but that doesn't make her a soprano. That means she can access soprano. Karen is by all means a soprano; how can you listen to both of them and get that from Kelly? There are degrees of soprano (1st, 2nd, coloratura, dramatic & etc), but Kelly is a solid alto. Terribly sorry.

She is an alto because despite how high she can sing, her modul voice in it's natural very dark, rich and resonant. U have a very simplistic way of thinking. Vocal classification is ONLY measured by over-all drkness of timbre, vocal weight, and tessitura, NOTHIN' else!! Like how Chaka can out-soprano anyone else on the planet nonetheless still ALTO. Yes her upper register is ridiculous but, she has always been an alto, song alto all her life, and indeed has always CLASSIFIED herself as such..

@dayday303 Actually you're just as dumb as the person you're replying to. You're using terms like Soprano and coloratura as if they were specifically designed for pop, r&b, etc. belting. NOT!!!! Those terms are meant for classical/opera singers who use head voice. But you can loosely refer to pop singers as one of the basic classes. (base...soprano) However, Whitney WAS a soprano. Also, she uses head voice to sing C6 but can go higher I'm sure...even after her slight voice change.

Yeah, some ppl don't have a solid understanding of the voice, moreover vocal characteristics. Sing high, ur alto soprano, you sing lower ur alto...NOT how it works!!
