I'm really pleased to find this....I was always taken in by Trad arr Rose on the UK version.....and it was Rose's version that I first heard....I have to say that I still like tim's work immensely but its really great to hear the original (and a superb original at that) ....I have heard hundreds of renditions over the years and I like quiet a lot of them (I even uploaded a half-cocked version myself) so many many thanks for uploading this....all the best...Kev
@peterkj2606 Well said Peter - I just made a similar comment elsewhere about Bonnie - it's her song so her's is the definitive version - this applies to songs ALWAYS : )
heard the DEAD perform this before finding its WRITER who should be recognized first even though jerrys work is unforgetable dont know other guitar player who was onstage with the dead
Beautiful voice and haunting song. Her voice is right up there with Lorraina Mckennitt, Sarah Brightman and Nana Maskouri. I also like Lulu's version which is sung with frightening emotion. Thanks so much for the post!!!
"Walk me out in the morning dew, walke me out in the morning today, I can't walk you out in no morning dew, I can't walk you out in no morning dew at all" Amazing!!!!!I love this song!! Very, very beautifu!!!!!!!
I like Blackfoots version best... but its all just personal taste, the fact remains is that Bonnie Dobson has left as her legacy an iconic tune that still rings true today as it did back in the 1960's.
I have heard many versions of this song, and used to think Grateful Dead's was the best, until I heard this. Dobson has a beautiful voice and sings with such emotion that she eclipses all other cover versions. When I hear this, I imagine myself sitting in a Folk club in 1962 ... the year of the Cuban missile crisis ... hanging on these lyrics, thinking WOW. All these years later, this song is still relevant. Bonnie Dobson should be better know than she is.
What a lovely, poignant voice. This version definitely suffers from too much studio "sweetening". Why can't the hacks ever leave great music to stand or fall on its' own merits? Why do they always insist on "improving" songs that were just fine to begin with?
A true masterpiece. Amazing that it was her first song ever written, and to this day her best. Also so many others have covered it, and there are relatively few of them that disappoint.
I'm surprised, it seems every other version besides Dobson's removes the most emotional line from the song, the line about never hearing your baby cry again. I've loved the Grateful Dead's various versions of this, but wow, I really love the original.
hej, ark thanks for mail it's okay that we all have our fav choice Yes, I am how you say, not really into artist, it is the muzic and individual performance yes, but I was so impressed by the feeling that moved acroos the screen yes
not wishing in anyway to take away her claim to originality to this record, and it is almost haunting, ive listened to all versions, and by far the best is the LULU version, which for sheer power, emotin and presence, cannot be touched by any version that is on this site, if you disagree take another look at LULU's version and look at the emotion she puts into it both facialy, and voice wise as for the tim rose version as pushed by some, all i can say, is they most be tone deaf,
@Gail940 Thanks for referring me to Lulu's version. I'd definitely put her in the Top 3. However, I can't put her at #1, which I still give to Blackfoot. Music is still an audial medium, so I listened without looking at the video. Awesome voice and clarity. But Blackfoot gets the nod b/c of the overall arrangement and mood of the piece. I think also we all have style biases. I'm more the metal type, while Lulu's is pop. Her version is worthy of respect by anyone though.
This is not Bonnie's original version of the song. Her 1962 version was just voice and acoustic guitar. This version with orchestral backing was recorded in 1969 with Jack Richardson (The Guess Who) producing.
Woke up to this tune this morning, CBC here in Canada had done a documentary on it last week sometime which was great.
Important tune, covered by hoards of people. Tim Rose, for all his other worth, really had nothing to do with the writing of the tune. Bonnie is recognized as the writer [alone] after a long court battle. Good for her. Powerful song.
I've heard virtually all of the versions of this song thanks to the U here. Very disappointed with Chieftains and Plant. My favorites #3. Devo #2. Dobson #1. Blackfoot.
@blizzfool agree... the version on Europe '72 is terrific... its somehow better because Jerry was a solid singer but not quite good enough to hit the notes all the way, it lends a weariness to it that is very compelling... he plays a real moving solo on it as well and Weir plays some real nice rhythym parts
J'adore cette voix superbe. Je viens de l'écouter sur un de mes albums "Dejavu Retro Gold Collection" with Judy Collins, Doc Watson, Leo Kottke and Gordon Lightfoot...

I knew that Bonnie Dobson had composed this song, but I had never heard her version until now. I also didn't know about the Tim Rose co-writing flap.

@DrSamba1 actually he didn't co write the song... He came in later and changed the lyrics from take me for a walk to walk me out.

@atomlewis420 Understood--I was referring to his claim that he had co-written it. I agree it's a pretty flimsy claim.
